I think he meant more you dont see authors on talk shows anymore which is really more of a media thing than a commentary on reading in America. The guys they brought up as famous authors are all guys that do/did oprah, the Ron and Fez show, or write for magazines. The guys he brought up as former famous authors all did Dick Cavette.

We have "commercial" and "pop" authors, they didn't I think there's just been transference, it isn't all that different.

Hodgeman, Sedaris and whats his douche, mcsweenys heartbreaking work of staggering douchness douche. All those guys became famous as authors first and then translated their personalities into other media.

Old Man and the Sea is a great beach read...and, I'm sure none of my favorite fiction authors (other than the classics) are on the list without looking: Baldacci, Deaver, Patterson, to name a few
