I can't help thinking there's a homage to Kubrick in there
and he probly would've said: "bah! it's been done. move on"

Kubrick inspired most space themed movies after 2001.
If Kubrick lived today he would be in heaven with the ability to achieve new levels of reality.

You're right, of course, Paulo, I meant it to be more of a nod to the master

Alfonso Cuaron is a brilliant filmmaker in his own right and clearly was raised dreaming the dreams of 2001.

I'm rather surprised that this movie is getting such accolades.
Yes.... it was shot beautifully and yes... it was very fluid & graceful.
But the script and certain plot points are predictable & cliche.
It was almost like it was written by some kind of screenplay software.
I won't spoil anything. But I will say that there are two elements to this story that will make you roll your eyes.

I think everyone agrees that what makes Gravity special is it is an experience.
The story works well considering we would expect something dry and boring.
It is exciting but it is also tactile and real. It is a visual and aural display that I have rarely seen. I don't think anyone thinks that the story is what makes it special.
That said, I think it is a career high for Bullock.

I know about the one element you're talking about (Clooney) and I actually dug it .. First it was "WTF", then , oh that makes a lot more sense, and was kinda fitting .

Not quite.
I was referring to the fact that:
It was Clooney's last mission.... and he died. How many times have we seen a cop... fireman... detective... soldier...whatever... and it's their last day on the job... just one more mission, and they're outta there.... and then that person dies. (or their wife does). In this movie... it's completely not needed. It's the same movie WITHOUT that element, so why even bother inserting it into the plot??
And then there's
The death of Bullock's child.
It didn't make her situation any more or less dire. It didn't make her character any more or less worthy of our respect... attention... or whatever. It felt like somebody shoehorned it into the script. Like... perhaps the studio or whatever insisted on it.

I might as well use the spoiler tags. First of all, what Gravity does well, it does very, very, very, very well. Period. Exclaimation point!
But be realistic. It is two people floating in space for 1 1/2 hours. You have to give stupid people some drama. I dug laying on drama in what could have been a very boring story. We are there to see an awesome visual experience but the added drama helps.

I had to stay away from TV & other shows to make sure that I didn't hear what happened to Clooney .I thought he MIGHT make it , and didn't want it to be spoiled . So when he comes back at the end I was going ,"Great, he lives...oh wait ...it's a dream " But a little bit spiritual , him coming back to remind her one last time (though prob just her remembering while low on O2 ). And I don't mind her backstory either .
HOWEVER, the director say that what the studio wanted he didnt put in the movie, like showing the missle being fired by the Russian, and a love story between the 2 astronauts .He wisely left that out .
