The guitar tone on this song is so good, especially right before and after the chorus. Kurt Vile has the most horrendous North Philly accent.

So Ron's position is that molesting a kid does not objectively screw them up, it's only because society tells them it should screw them up?
You realize that this guy who was molested by his teachers as a child and claims it was NBD has dedicated his life to denouncing god. Do you see any connection there at all, johnny subtext?

being molested only messes a kid up because society tell the kid its so?! REALLY?! i work with children who have been molested and raped by their parents every day. im talking about chidren who sometimes are not even old enough to speak, who in one case could walk yet, who in another contracted an incuriable STD before she was in kindergarten. ive seen the trauma this shit causes first hand. my very job involves mitigating the damage caused by this type of violation.
As a victim of long time childhood sexual molestation , just shut the fuck up ron.

I don't think that's what he's saying at all, I think he's saying that not everyone reacts to such trauma the same, but in our society it has become expected, almost required that people react with almost complete ruination, rather than encouraging those who bounce back quick and accepting and helping those who don't, we treat the ones with less scarring as if there is something wrong with them.
in other words let's encourage everyone to bounce back and move on, but be accepting of those who can't, rather than making the inability to do so the expected norm.

there is no "bouncing back quick" no matter what those people think or say. it takes YEARS of rationalization/internalization/compartmentalization, etc to get to a place where you even *THINK* it didnt affect you.
In actuality, it affects every part of the persons interaction with the outside world. it even makes some survivors believe that they are "superior" for not "being the messes society expects," when all it does is hide any possible mental issues caused by all of the suppression and perhaps not getting the appropriate therapy.
I see it every day. every. single. day.

I'm in agreement with this view. I don't believe Ron is unsympathetic to anybody who has been abused. I think he sometimes comes across as glib on the topic because (1) he is chained at the ankle to somebody who clings to their "victimhood" above all else (which has to be even more frustrating for him than us) and (2) he was raised at the tail end of the cultural norm (as was I) where the model for masculine behavior was, when you had a problem, just rub some dirt on it and walk it off.

see.. this is what people who havent been victimized in some kind of way seem to have a hard time understanding. there is no just "moving on" or "getting over it."
sexual violation is probably the most personal kind of violation a person can ever experience. the most private parts of you were taken away before you even had a chance to understand what was even going on and by people who were supposed to be trusted protectors or authority figures. that is A LOT of shit to work thru. that is not counting the almost guaranteed depression that follows and not knowing why you are so sad or how to express it. then you dont know who to tell because "its our secret"? how do you explain the weird pictures you start to draw?
how do you deal with the actual feeling of the act? it feels good, but its wrong. you know that person is not supposed to touch your privates. now you get aroused at weird times but dont know what it is. so you start masturbate or engage in frotteurism. you get caught and get yelled at! "who taught this to you?!" are feelings like this bad?
all of this happens for a lot of my clients, they are still in the single digits of age in life.
yeah, just rub some dirt on that.

I think Ron's primary motivation is the avoidance of difficult emotions. And it's really tough to create the idea the victim can shrug off the crime so easily because that can really be used to rationalize the acts of the perp. "well hey its no big deal to them, see..." or turned into victim blaming. Ron never acts like trauma is a personal journey, he constantly judges people for their trauma, so he cant play subjective trauma now.
Also, it's skewing the data to say that people have a victim complex given to them by society in cases like these. You have to allow for the fact that maybe there is a victimization in those cases because they're traumatic and have profound impact all the time. I know I've dealt with people who undergo trauma and their way to deal with it is to ignore it, and it shakes them apart until they have a breakdown. Just because they say "hey, it's no big deal, I'm just moving on..." doesn't mean thats true.
So I agree with the idea that everyone gets to choose what they do after a trauma but I dont think Ron is really representing that idea. And I dont think that how we act to trauma is society driven. Rape and molestation had the same mental impact when they were more permissive behaviors as they do now, and I think there's a lot of evidence for that.

To clarify I think Ron is taking a position anti to one that doesn't exist. We dont force trauma victims into treatment. We certainly very strongly encourage trauma victims to seek help they may not understand or admit they need. Ron has dont this with returning war vets on numerous occasions. But if they ultimately opt out of that treatment it's not like we have any other recourse to compell them. We all just move on.

I don't think anyone here (or anywhere frankly) would disagree with anything you've quite elegantly written here, with the one exception that there isn't any getting over it.
I'm not saying it is easy or that our society doesn't severely underfund the resources necessary to provide the required therapy that people who have been through this trauma need but, at some point (which will be different for every individual) if one doesn't move past the trauma (if not get "get over it") then they are giving the criminal more power to do damage to one's life. I think this is different than just dismissively saying that some one should "just get over it."
Alsa, I wasn't defending the "just rub some dirt on it" POV, only trying to say that's the way that most guys over 40 were raised.

Hear Pep, try a spoon of this sweetened condensed milk for your death rattle. Ron, try these cream cheese on saltines chased with a mexican coke then breath into the mic like a 12 year old pug. - pit doc
well, he's the doctor. On a side note, I'd love some delicious rice pudding (wazzat?)

Saline flushes with a neti pot feel bizarre but they do leave you refreshed and cleaned out.

On lunch I was reading and in my book they go to a church called Chipping Norton, that made me chuckle.
Who did Pit Doc give 1k to? That kindof depends on if it's cool or not. Man Pit Doc is a generous dude.

Is it bad that I only know Vincent Price from the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo from when I was a kid? Possibly the finest run of Scooby Doo, by the way.
How about Alice Cooper?

Wow, the lady in that obit sounds like my Mom's mom. She's a terrible person, but I wouldn't write up an obit like that.
"Mom's mom"...grandmother? or is this a British thang?
both truthful and poetic
I know...spent 20 years vacationing in North Myrtle starting the weekend that Black Biker Week ended...our children got quite the education on our ride in (and us dads tried to not wreck as we took in some sights)
Black Biker week ended as the US Open ended and that is also the last week of public school in our area...my family's ADD couldn't wait for one day of summer break to pass before heading to MB (I remember one year when only chain restaurants were open on our way in...terrible)

She thought better of it after a day. and I can understand her trepidation somewhat. I was just in a magnanamous mood; hence the 10 K to my niece m and then I threw in 1 K to her . I had to reinterate to her to tell her boyfriend I WASNT try to play the "long game" and buy my way into her pants.. For some fucking reason , if I make a persons day, I just FEEL better. Hence food & cigars for Ron, and money for friends and family. But I've found over the years that if you do something BIG for somebody,,their reflex mechanism to make them not feel small is to say"What's WRONG with you?" Took a long time to not give a shit about that crap.

Well I hope you saw the other post where I said you were obviously a very generous guy. It is hard to graciously accept a gift and one of the reasons I couldn't take something so big from a peer is because it would make me feel like everything I give to them would be too small. You are also handcuffed by the fact that lots of guys would be playing the long game by doing this.
