So the full story here is the girl left her school because of bullying and deleted her facebook. But this group of girls found her on last.fm and continued to tell her that no one liked her and she should kill herself etc. Thats pretty harassy.

If they get these kids on anything it's not going to be murder and they're not going to be tried as adults. They're going to get some kind of community service and counseling which they probably need.

The other thing is that the instances of bullying that end in suicide are a really miniscule percentage of the cases. Everyone who calls up and says I was bullied and I'm fine now is right, you were bullied and you were fine. Most kids that get bullied turn out fine. Somehow in looking at the cases where the kids dont turn out fine people get pretty attacky. The system isn't breaking down, you just didn't hear about kids killing themselves as much back then.



Looking for hard data to support which is difficult but the suicide rate of 15 - 24 year olds was double for the years 1980-2000 than it was by the mid 2000s. So if teen suicide rates have doubled since 2005 we're still only at the rate they had been for the 20 previous years.

Kids are gonna be mean and clicky, it's a natural part of socialization. Ron, in his insensitive way, is probably on the right track, warn kids that this is coming, educate them to deal with it, give them coping skills to see other options.

Well honey, those are things you just have to deal with in life sometimes."

We're not talking about kids killing themselves because someone doesn't want to sit with them at lunch, or forcing 15 year old girls to invite everyone in class to their birthday party. One thing Fez said which is 100% spot on is this is stuff you could not get away with at work or in your private adult life.

It has always been, they just have new weapons that have much more reach. But honestly, when I was 14, if I somehow ended up with a picture of a peer naked, I would have showed it to everyone, and you most likely would have too. How do you punish that? The naked person never should have put it out there, and the adult thing for the person with the pic should destroy it, but these are kids, every act leading to and including the suicide are bad decisions, and kids make those constantly.

that's the catch 22, I suspect most kids learn compassion by being mean and seeing the hurt in another person, I know that's how I learned it.
