White people do distinguish between other white people at a higher level than this conversation is acknowledging, though. Atleast where I'm from Italian and Irish aren't the same race. German and Polish are way different too. I think it's a combination of under and oversensitivity. We're pretty naive about alienating someone else with questions because we aren't alienated by it.

I think it's because most Hispanic people I've met have a strong identity to their ethnic background (country of origin style). Black people, not so much, for obvious reasons, except for recent immigrants.

When I make chilli I put big red beans in it, they come from a can that says "chilli beans" on it, so apparently a lot of people put beans in their chilli. I grew up in the Dayton Oh area, we had Skyline where they served chilli over pasta, but my mom served it with crackers, so I'm good either way, but if you go with the pasta, you have to kill it with shredded cheddar.

Listening on delay, Castro's argument doesn't make any sense.
Just because someone asks you where you're from doesn't mean they don't accept you as an American. That's such a bizarre and paranoid leap.

In the same sentence she says she's proud of her ethnic background, but doesn't want others to identify her for her ethnic background.

I can't pretend to know what it's like to live her life, but it seems to me that the bi-product of a melting pot is going to be a diverse mixture. I don't know why it's bad to ask another citizen about their heritage, so long as it's not for the purpose of discriminating.
She's a college student, she should be questioning things, she'll piece it all together eventually.

That's a really good point. She's probably just figuring out who she is, and this seems like a natural step in that progression.

it really does seem that a really engaged student can be a real pain in the ass with their new knowledge. Just part of the process I guess.
