Briefly reading about synesthesia, I've found definitions for about 8 different types of it so far, and none of them sound like Fez's randomly assigning numbers to people.

I'm sure everyone involved knew both connotations at the time. And the actor was probably thinking more about being happy to have a job acting. Writers of TV shows of all decades, knew the connotations of slang words. TV writers have always been notoriously aware of what they wrote.
