I've never seen either show, but this is what I gather from what I've seen on media about the two shows. In DD, they did a show about a family of rednecks who are rich, which gives them the opportunity to do crazy redneck stuff without limit. In JS, they gave a bunch of Jersey white trash kids unlimited funds, so they can do crazy Jersey white trash stuff without limit.

I have no opinion on if they should be fired or not, I dont think A&E should be criticized for their business decisions especially by a bunch of people who have no monetary interest in it.

I dont watch the show, if I did watch the show I may choose to stop watching it based on these events. If the government tried to sanction them in some way I'd be 100% against it. Thats all.

I think people on both sides completely take leave of their senses in these situations and that annoys me. I'm more sympathetic to the gays in this case because I recognize the need for them to advocate in their position.

I totally disagree, if this sort of thing happened only to celebrities then you would have a sound argument, the fact is these days pretty much everyone is subject to having their speech ruin them. Lots of people lose their jobs now for expressing an opinion on social media that offends someone. It's absolutely an emerging pattern that started with crybaby squeaky wheel fuckheads being taken serious by the broadcasting/entertainment industry. This should concern everyone, you'd have to be blind not to see the evolution of this. If we continue to let crybabies and special interest groups persecute anyone they please for their opinions then we will effectively give up free speech, without the government lifting a finger to cause it.

I'm just talking about Duck Dynasty.

In the case of social media it's case by case. If your company has it in your contract that you can be held accountable, or you post a picture of yourself dressed as a bombing victim from a company computer or phone taken at your companies office then thats that in my mind. Social media is quasi public. It also can be made more private if you have a mind to do so.

But it fits into my profitability argument even more than a Duck Dynasty because atleast the guy on Duck Dynasty is directly tied into the success of that show, so he has an interest in the show being a hit. I could post all kinds of rotten shit that comes back on my company and my companies name has a lot more cache than I do. I'm damaging a brand I have no ownership of, and can completely walk away from in almost total anonymity. In a few months no one would remember my name but the damage has been done. So why would a company stand by me in that situation?

so we all should be comfortable with the corporate world policing free speech? As long as they are doing it to protect the mighty dollar.
And in this case A&E has caved to a small special interest group, as is the norm these days, to their own detriment. There's a Facebook petition to boycott the network thats up to almost 600k in a very short time.
This idea that companies have the right might be true, but that doesn't make it right.

I'm just being pragmatic. My company has a dress code, if I show up to work out of dress code I can be disciplined which is something I've been made aware of as a term of my employment. That is a way that the company interferes with my freedom of expression for their own financial interests, but no one makes a big deal about that. If a company did not have a provision in place I dont think they should be able to discipline anyone.

I think people should direct their anger at A&E and not the special interest group. It's repressive to tell the special interest group that they need to forgo their offense and right to protest in order to protect the sensibility of the majority. Be mad just at A&E, those are the people who took the action.

No, I just think we all, as individuals need to realize that this thing has evolved since Rev Al used it to take down Imus, and now can be used on anyone for stating an opinion. We need to push back.

No, damnit, it is NOT!

I get the idea from the FACT that the very IDEA of "free speech" comes from the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. To wit:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

We are a capitalist, free market, democratic republic society. The GOVERNMENT cannot punish us for our opinions because of our Constitution. BUSINESSES can hire or fire us for any or no reason, unless we collectively bargain for further rights.

If you do not like those FACTS, then start working on getting the law changed.

If I had been saying 1st ammendment all this time, you'd be right. Only applies to government. I'm talking about actual speech, maybe I should be saying free expression of opinion, since the minute you say free speech people start the whole "only the govt bla bla bla". I can't argue the fact that some exploit the protection of unions, or that those in power in unions exploit those positions (power corrupts, and all that). But I can't be anti-union because of those things. It drives me nuts when people rail against unions "driving companies out of business with unreasonable demands" at the same time they don't even bat an eyelash at the same company's CEO making $50 million.

As far as free speech/expression of of opinion/whatever, what's the difference?
In every example, that individual was free to express their opinion, and their employer was free to react to it as they saw fit. You said it earlier it was not in A&E's best interest to suspend the guy, but I'm sure if it wasn't, they wouldn't have.

While I get the separation argument bt biz and country on the 1st amendment, it has very prominently been part of our structure in biz for years even if not legally incorporated. It seems of late thoughts, voting patterns/PACs and personal decisions ARE getting mixed up with how the market/job can influence or even force these things in our lives. Unions and any org will have some corruption simply due to the human factor DV, but their need is HUGE of late again, yet they have so little power bc biz has effectively crushed them through both private and political means.

They played Monday. 4-4 tie. Moved my son's team from #8 in the state to #3.

Sounds great, but my son's team HAD them. They were winning 4-1 going into the third. They ran out of gas.

I know it sounds bad for my son, giving up 3 goals in the third and "blowing the lead", but he really did play very well. The goals against him were three deflections and a breakaway, 2 on the power play.

Like I said, his team got tired in the third, which created that little bit of extra space and time for the other team. He did all he could. Shots were 26-12 in favor of the other team.

I don't think the media/entertainment industries are afraid of the religious right because they have worked so hard at painting them as idiotic caricatures...even if they protested/boycotted, it would be the punchline of jokes for a year

they are however, afraid of the minority groups because they have championed their cause for so many years...in other words, they can weather one storm and not the other

can you make fun of the religious right and suffer no repercussions, yes...can you oppose the opinion of a minority group, like gays, and suffer no repercussion, no

I don't like social engineering whether it's the government or an industry doing it...just don't like it

I think the reason they ran out of gas was that the coach leaned on his top lines too much, but he didn't really have a choice. The bottom of our roster couldn't keep up with this team.

he probably was afraid that, since you seem to have access to game info, you might figure out who he is based on the goalies name.

Just to clarify, I didn't think spoon would do it spitefully. I just didn't want him to ask an innocent question with a little too much information.

Like this, totally innocent here too, but if train a left hoboken at 6:31am and traveled at 39mph...what time would it arrive at penn station nyc? Follow up, if a train left newark penn station at the same time, what speed would it have to travel at to reach the same nyc station at the same time? And yes, the conductors are texting and drunk.
