There is an upper west side couple that teaches at Columbia who are patrons of the village folk singers, and Llewyn crashes at their house a lot. Hicks said he hated these people and thought they were just 'collecting freaks' to show off to their intellectual liberal friends. Lelslie Coffin said "dont you think they're his family?" and pepper didn't.


They are 100% family surrogates in the movie and Llewyn's interaction with them and his emotional obstacles/growth is really important in this regard. They arent just a couch he crashes on in a cycle of mutual patronization. There is a symbolism with their cat that is particularly important.

Funnily enough the movie is about a broke ass hipster from queens who only sleeps on the couch and likes cats.
