What a damn shame, I was thinking the other day about rewatching "Doubt" , the man could act.
Hopefully we'll get a sobriety lecture tomorrow morning from an active sex/porn addict who has abused hardon pills for so long they don't work anymore.

He was an amazing actor. It's a shame.
But as for my beliefs in drug legalization and all that, you assume the risk.
I remember hearing that he had gotten clean in a very quiet way. Sucks it got the better of him.

I hope he didn't have money on the game.

Heroin must be a really great high for people to risk dying when using it

I've heard it's the best. But, I mean, not worth the risk.

This one shocked me. I had no idea he had any drug problems. He was a great actor, I hated him in every movie (but you were supposed to hate him, so it's okay).

I hope he didn't have money on the game.
Maybe he bet on Denver. Anyway, I hope the high was worth it.

Im surprised by how much his death affected me. his death is a great loss to the arts community. I didn't realize how often he appeared in my favorite movies.

yeah - he was a good one.
SO strange that most times the best actors are secretly barely keeping it together in their real life.
Real life addiction and struggles create a person that can totally immerse into another life for a little while for the big screen.

I think the connection is on a different level than the one you're describing.
Being and actor (and musician) is the only profession where you can embrace your addictions AND be accepted.
Actors and musicians have money... access to drugs... and LOTS of time off. Sometimes months... sometimes years. In either case, they are "allowed" to abuse their bodies and minds, and then come back to a workforce that will not shun them. In fact... it will embrace them.
If you work at Citibank, or if you're a teacher, or whatever... you simply can not talk about the piles of cocaine you did last month/week. If you do... you will be terminated. If you work at walmart and you ask your manager for four weeks off so that you can check yourself into rehab, you will be fired. Right there. On the spot. They have "zero tolerance" for any drug related behavior of any kind.
However, people in the entertainment field are not subjected to those same rules and policies.
I truly believe that THAT is why we tend to think that "these actors are such tortured souls... and they USE that torture to enhance their craft" all that stuff.
Nope.
It's just that Comedians and musicians and actors all get to embrace their hedonism, and there's no accountability for it.

I agree and I would also include people with inherited wealth in this category.
If you look at the first video Paulo posted above where Hoffman talks about his addictions, he's laughing about it. Every heavy-duty junkie I have known is the same way. They laugh about it, how they went through their inheritance or how their parents lost their house paying for lawyers. It's not real to them.
The news reports said Hoffman had 40 bags of heroin on him that were spiked with some type of pain killer they give to cancer patients. At that point he might as well have a gun in his hand and play Russian Roulette with 5 bullets.

There's a quick shot of him with his lawyer in one of his first roles.

A role he was born to play.
