Oscar nominations were announced today, it's not important, but here's the 'big' awards
It was disappointing, Memento screwed, Steve Buscemi screwed, Tenenbaums screwed, Man who wasn't there screwed, the highly over rated Gosford Park got its ass kissed.

Does it bother anyone else that the words "Training Day" will be spoken at the oscars? I didn't think either performance was "Oscar Calibre" and there could have been better noms for the two best actor categories. Meanwhile, Hackamn not being nominated is a crime. Sean Penn for playing a retard? Give me an F'ing break with the "feelgood movies"....

And was "best animated feature" added so they can give Shreck an oscar without pissing off everyone in the entertainment business?

They finally gave Lynch his first nom since Blue Velvet, but everyone knows Howard's winning the damn thing.

Gosford Park? Huh?

I see LOTR winning a special effects award. That's it. Maybe McKellan wins, but I doubt it. The scenery and cosumes awards will go to Moulin Rouge, and the Story awards go to Beautiful mind. Dman shame really, the academy despises fantasy movies unless it's some cutsey cartoon-thing like Shreck.

Oh well, Rouge and Mind (possibly this Gosford thing, looks like an oscar kiss-ass)share a sweep, all the while boring us another 4-5 hours...

Here's my thoughts (if you really care):

Best Movie: The fact that Gosford Park got nominated for best picture annoys the piss out of me. I want LOTR to win, just because, but I gotta feel A Beautiful Mind will win hands down.

Best Actor: It's a complete joke that Sean Penn is nominated, and just proves that if you want to at least have the possibility of winning an Academy award, you just have to play a retard on camera. I'm even more pissed that Will Smith got nominated....last thing we need is to fuel HIS ego even more. Crowe will probably win, but I'm pulling for Denzel, just for the hell of it.

Best Actress: I don't care about any of these people. Sissy Spacek wins.

Supporting Actor: If McKellen doesn't win, I'll be very upset. I mean, I know LOTR will get totally buried here, but could you at least throw us this bone?

Supporting Actress: I'm hoping that Connelly wins, but knowing them, they'll give it to Tomei again.

Director: I'm be very pleased if Jackson wins, but he probably has the worst shot (well, maybe more so than Lynch). Jackson's not a Hollywood insider like Altman, so they'll give it to that old idiot.

Animated film: Only 3 movies? Shrek wins easy.

You know I didn't realize it until someone said it but HACKMAN who won the Golden Globe wasn't nominated for the Tenenbaums but Penn playing in an Oscar bait film that didn't even get good reviews. I didn't see Rogue but I picked Kidman because she deserved it for Eyes wide Shut and To Die For and I've been a fan of hers for years.

And Seven, I take it you've seen GOsford park? Tell me if you agree with my analysis: Pretenious, overlong, soap opera. few good moments. not a comedy. too many characters. really lame.

and i'm willing to say that Jackson has a better chance of Oscar than Lynch because Fellowship made sense.

Go LoTR 13 nominations. Very unlucky number if you ask me. I think Ian McKellan was the perfect fit for gandalf. I hope he wins.

I can honestly say that I have not seem one movie that has been nominated in any category. I guess it doesn't help that the only movie I saw last year was Hannibal, and that's not getting any awards.

Wow Denzel, Halle and Will! They nominated three black people??? Wow! Im impressed!

One question why did they nominate that crap movie Moulin Rouge for oscars and not Ghost World??

Another question, why are there only three films in the animated film category??

The Oscars are all political bullshit. They need to kiss Ron Howard and Robert Altman's ass, so they nominated those films for everything. Gosford Park will win a lot because they want to make up for Altman being snubbed in the past. I'm glad the Nolans at least got the nod for Best Screenplay, but Momento was hands down the best movie of the year. I'm sure Amelie will beat them though.

for best screenplay dan i wouldn't be surprised if it's Gosford Park so they can try to show their sophisticated and pretend they 'understood' the shit altman film. I'm not saying Altman's a bad guy, I think the player might be one of the best movies of the 90s but GOSFORD PARK STINKS.

The Academy Awards suck...but lets face it there really werent a lot of great movies last year...and what the hell is tha academy trying to creat another Tom Hanks with Russell Crowe?? Two nominations, and more than likely two wins in row for him...I am rooting for LOTR also, but agree that I dont see them coming away with too much (see Star Wars for that example, was nominated for 10 Academies). I agree that a best animated film award was created to not piss off the people at Dreamworks. It actually is a "rumble" category pitting Disney versus Dreamworks. Battle of the executives with the deepest pockets, ugggghhhh!!! Does anybody really care about the academies anymore?? When was the last year that they had a good slew of movies nominated. I can think of 1994 when they had Pulp Fiction, Gump, and Shawshank Redemption all nominated (Shawshank got screwed in my mind).

I know was a stupid movie, but did anybody ever see "Bowfinger" with Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin?? Remember the quote that Eddie Murphy saying that the only way to win an academy, especially for a black man, is to play either a slave or a retard. So this explains the whole Sean Penn nomination thing. The academies are looking to attract the Moshin demograph...

Ahhhh they awards are just an excuse for the pompous to get together and have the worlds biggest circle jerk anyway. Anybody remember when they used to snub Steven Spielbergh cause he was a "fantasy director" (see Empire of the sun)??

I go to see this piece of crap with a couple friends, because they want to see an "art movie". So we all go see this. What an utter waste of time!

You're dead right. It's very pretentious, it seems like it lasts forever, and I've seen better period dramas (mystery? comedy? What the hell was it trying to be?) on A&E for free. I couldn't stand it, and it annoys me that it will probably win at least a couple Oscars.

Steve Buscemi screwed

Amen to that brother. This guy basically carries every movie that he is in with his presence. He brings something to every role, but he shined in "Ghost World".

And Marisa Tomei, she has to have photos of the Academy members f'n farm animals.

...and for my 500th post, something profound -

SEAN PENN WILL WIN THE BEST ACTOR OSCAR BECAUSE HE PORTRAYS A RETARD. MARK MY WORDS.

There's a history of that happening on a regular basis folks.

I hate award shows, so I'm only going to put my two cents in on the most meaningless category:

Monsters Inc. deserves the nod FAR more than Shrek. Pixar makes AMAZINGLY good movies. Shrek was just a JO fest for Dreamworks execs who hate Disney. And I liked Shrek.

Another thing about "best animated feature" is, with only three nominations, is it a diliberate kick in the ass to "Waking Life" and "Final Fantasy"? I mean, neither were that good, but they could have at least rounded out 5 nominations...

Then again, neither were aimed at children, which might have conflicted with the Acadamy's definition of animation...

another bitch about Gosford Park. it's part (According to what i've read) satire of early 20th century servant/master relations in Britian. how could this work if anyone who could remember this is probably dead by now? Now I'm not saying a satire has to be current, Dr. Strangelove is brilliant movie and a great satire even though I wasn't alive when the cold war as going on but that works, maybe, because it was something that I read about or was important. I can't explain how satires work or don't but tthis one didn't work.
