I was wondering if everyone is a latent racist. We recognise that certain groups exhibit certain traits, both good and bad. But can a person fully put aside all such preconceptions and treat each individual soley on their presentation at that time? Or as ive heard some suggest - racism will always exist to some degree in all cultures. Perhaps its merely a matter of degrees. What do others think?

Our brains work by compartmentalizing information and comparing and contrasting it (and hopefully incorporating it) with what we already know.

As such, stereotypes exist as we immediately classify people based on our prior experiences with them or what we have been told about them.

Racism is another matter as it takes the stereotypes on step further. Racism believes that all stereotypes he has are valid and universal truth applicable to all he deems fits into a specific group (or who are excluded from the rest of society).

To put it another way, it's natural to have preconceived notions based on stereotypes. This should be recognized so that a conscious effort may be made to judge people on their own merits.

I don't have a dictionary on hand, but mose people think that the definition of racism is a sheet wearing clansman spouting ethnic slurs.

My defiinition, which I also believe is one of the definitions in the dictionary, is just observing the differences between your ethnicity (race is such a stupid term to describe different people, in my opinion, BTW) and other ethnicities.

Everyone in the world is racist. No matter how many different people you hang with, you still look in the mirror and see the skin you were born with.

The only difference is the level of racism a person has. Some people say "Hmm ______ people's culture seems different from mine" while others say "Oh I hate _______ race or I think i'm better than ________ race.

It's sad that the thing that makes us unique is the same thing that separates us. I wish we could all be one color, but that would kill the great variety we enjoy.

just by grouping people into races, you already form a sort of racism. You have already judged them by their ethnicity. It's the levels of extreme that you take it to that determine its crippling effects.

Carlos Mencia, who comes on O&A every now and then, made a great point about immigrants coming into the US. He said that we have such advanced technology that the government can read the words on your newspaper in your home from sattellites, but we can't stop Jose from crossing the border?

The government turns its back to let immigrants come in because there are tons of jobs that even the poorest American Citizen will not do.

It's just sad that the lazy jackass immigrants come on the same boat as the people who are starving and want to make just a little bit of money for their families.
