Seriously. are they really worth anything except a day off from school or day off from work? i know people might say 'oh it's time for you to look back on whatever' and spend time with people but do you honestly think most people care about the meaning of the holiday itself and what it stands for or do they just look at it as a time for relaxation. change a holiday's date by six months and no one would really care as long as they get the same amount of days off.

and this just isn't meant to be another Valentine's Day thread, this is about all holidays which are, in fact, nothing but corporate tools to get you to pay money into products.

You're absolutely right...but most people won't honestly admit it....whether it be President's day, Veteran's day,MLK jr b-day, Christmas, New Years or whatever...people just want days off from work, presents or a reason to celebrate. Decorating, planning and shopping keep people busy and many people enjoy them. But everyone is so full of it. Good post Ikea.

i don't totally agree. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's the whole holiday season actualy has a feel to it. they mean something.
the other "federal" holidays could happen anyday, so long as i get a 3day weekend out of it.

furie...wake up...it has a feel to it? it's called capitalism and commercialism. When you wake up Christmas morning as a little kid and run down to the tree..are you celebrating Jesus's b-day? no you're opening presesnts that have been associated with a holiday. Eating tons of chocolate on Easter, painting eggs? nothing to do with the holiday meaning. Thanksgiving...what are you celebrating? a great big, self-indulgent meal? New years is just another reason to drink and party. The fact is..everyone may enjoy some of these holidays...but atleast admit they have no association with how you personally celebrate them.

maybe i am a fool, but during the holiday season i notice people generally are nicer to eachother. there is still a little spirit of the brotherhood of man left after the corperations are done with christmas.
and i'm not saying that today's modern holidays aren't tainted by corperate America.

If christmas is just about jesus..why have a christmas tree and decorations? do you go to church? why give gifts to each other...if it's his birthday..not yours? And maybe you're right..people can be a bit nicer than usual during that season...but have you ever been in a mall or a store during the season? Not friendly or anything resembling being friendly. And if anyone really believes that they are so un-selfish about giving and receiving gifts...how bout next year..make sure you get nothing..and buy everyone else something..and tell me you're just as satisfied? I highly doubt it will be as enjoyable. Holidays are reasons to celebrate, party and get gifts. You may enjoy them..but realize what the meaning of the holiday and compare it to how you celebrate. Two completely seperate notions.

IKEA,

your are a man ahead of your years (what the?)

To be honest, Christmas is starting to piss me off. Some people might think it's a shame but all the running around, gift giving, and decorating take up too much time...The Spirit seems to get Totally lost...
Thanksgiving is more of a pleasurable holiday, the only preperation is the food, and a bit of housecleaning... As long as you don't eat too much it's enjoyable...
4th Of July is important, plus there's not much prep work, and the weathers usually nice...

holidays are what you make them to be. some people don't care and do nothing, others get way to caught up in the commercialism. i'm somewhere in the middle, ever since 9/11 i take more pride in being american and those who fought for my country, especially because my best friend left to join the navy. also valentines day is just a hallmark creation, but i'll get my girlfriend roses just the same just because i love her and it makes me happy to see her smile (76 dollars for a fucking dozen roses, what the fuck!) anyway, don't let the holiday's tell you how to feel, just make yourself happy on those days anyway you see fit

thanks to WWFallon
and Gvacnomore for the
money sig!

Most holidays are hallmark
manufactured.
Christmas is really the
celebration of Christ but
somewhere in Germany they came
up with Claus sending gifts to
children who had candles in
their windows. Now we give
toys to children that have too
much, but run away from
homeless men on the train- and
say we love giving.

valentines day is ridiculouse-
i efin hate it.

easter is suppose to celebrate
Jesus too but that got effed
up.
Im not too into holi

I agree that they are onyl good for having a few days off. Hell that is one of the main things I look forward to when the school year starts to bog me down...I cant wait till this Friday when my Mid-Wintervacation starts and I take a flight down to Florida. Going to be in the "Pinellas Park Florida" area...A friend of mine lives like 15 minutes from there. But that is neither here nor there, holidays are only good for a few days off, except for Thanksgiving. I truly do enjoy that holiday and will look forward to it

Hmmm, last time I checked, we had the ability to control our own thoughts. When a holiday comes round, it's up to you to recognize why it's a holiday and act accordingly, whether it means to remember person and the deeds commemorated, or embracing the spirit of the holiday. You're free to reject the commercialization if you want to.
