Cov, I used to be an INS agent. US citizens do NOT need a passport to enter Canda either by land or air; but I do recomend it. it just makes the inspections process easier. all he needs is proof of US citizenship(birth cert. for example) and photo id.
5 weeks is usually enough time to get passport.

This is true but it takes 6 - 8 weeks to get your passport. Plus, you get to burn $60 on something that expires in 10 years. but its cool to have though.

scorp. not always.
resident aliens have driver's licenses, and they're not citizens. if you have a ball-buster inspector, it could cuase problems.
need proof.
best way is passport

CovDiesel - I appologize for taking so long to respond.
Proof of US citizenship is all that's required to cross the Canadian border. 2 forms of photo ID are usually sufficient. Of course having a passport simplifies things, but it is not essential.
If you and your friends are flying to Canada, they can get a passport even the day before the trip, by going to the passport office and showing an airline ticket.
