The main criteria to be used in evaluating hypnosis is its effect.

On that basis , hypnosis is completely ineffectual for most, but not all people.

I've tried hypnosis for my back (from two different doctors) and found it to be ineffective - I could not be hypnotized. In addition to the two hypnotists I consulted privately, following my 3rd back surgery, I participated in an inpatient pain program at Beth Israel. Hypnosis and guided imagery therapy were administered thrice daily as part of the "alternative medicine" regimen. (Fortunately, that was only a small part of the program).

I found hypnosis to be as effective as rubbing crystals, casting runes, or consulting tarot cards.

Hypnosis does work for some people some of the time and I believe it to be a varient of the well documented "placebo effect." Although this phenonmenon is not well understood, placebos are often as (or more) effective than an actual treatment.

Interestingly, the greatest placebo effect is with PMS w/about 50% of women on placebos responding as well as people taking actual medication. (This doesn't mean that their symptoms were not real - they just were able to buy into the effectiveness of the placebos effect). Note that in these studies there is a control group and no one knows if they rerceive the treatment or the placebo.

Hypnosis has been used with limited effect for reducing pain in childbirth. It has also been used to some effect as an aid to weight loss and to stop smoking.

As to the latter part of your question, hypnosis has been used in therapy (sometimes to reawaken old memories.) This practice is very questionable and rife with controversy. The main issue (simplifying it greatly) is whether the "recalled" memories are real or merely suggested (perhaps unconsciously) by a therapist eager to achieve some sort of breakthrough.

Most therapists believe that repressed or suppressed memories are bet addressed in therapy by creating a safe environment in which a client can freely express things that have been long hidden.

AG - I'd save your money and try to achieve your objectives through alternate means.

I found hypnosis to be as effective as rubbing crystals, casting runes, or consulting tarot cards.

speaking as a professional tarot reader with a strong background in crystal therapy, I can tell you that it does work . . . if and only if the recipient is willing. In order for hypnosis to take effect, the patient must be willing to let down his resistance, to achieve a meditative state (with the help from the hypnotist). HK, you apparently were not willing to do this. I'm not blaming you, i'm only saying that if you put in the effort, it will work for you. If you go in there not believing, then of course it won't work

If anyone wants more info, IM or email me.

DARK - By the same token, gravity should only work if you believe it does.

Something either works or it doesn't work.

i think you miss my point, HK. hypnosis, (and tarot, and crystal-work, to a lesser extent) rely on getting through someone's mental defences, which can't be done unless the person is willing, or if you use certain drugs, which i don't recommend. If you don't believe that it will work, you are already putting up those defences. You want to prove them wrong.

It's a self-fufilling prophecy, so that the skeptic can remain skeptical; comfortable in his world without having to think that there might be more out there.

The mind is a very powerful thing. People can convince themselves that hypnosis works, that god exists and that hitting the bat against their cleats just so, will result in a hit.

If there is to be scientific validity to a principle, the identical results must be obtained every time it is tested. Hypnosis, healing touch and the like do not meet this criteria.

OK, so maybe I'm hypnotized by the seductive sway of Brittney Spears. But strangely I don't think of Pepsi...
