If you set a goal for yourself, careerwise or gradewise or relationship wise or whatever, and you give up b/c you don't believe you can reach your goal, does that mean you're a weak person?

I set goals for myself in school, life, and especially LOVE, and I never reach them.
I feel like I am a weak a person. Some would beg to differ.

I set mostly realistic goals, if that makes any sense...
fertilize the lawn
turn the soil
plant the tomatas
change the oil
sex with 2 woman
get the car detailed
work out a little bit
get some filet mignon on sale
sex with 2 woman
just the usual...

you're not weak if the goals were unrealalistic. and remember, you can't acheive everything you set for yourself.

SUNNY - Of course it has no correlation to being "weak."
As suggested above however, it is important that you set realistic goals that you know you can achieve (with some work).
I'll use a personal example: B/c of my disability I know that I'll never manage more than a walk. Imagine if my goal was to run a 4 minute mile. Since my goal couldn't possibly be achieved, I set myself up for failure and that might affect my self-esteem.
However, if my goal is to go to school, see clients and then come and rest from my few hours out, before begining to read and write papers, I have a greater chance of success.
This goal is good b/c it's usually doable. This does not mean that I'm sucessful every day or that I don't have to rely on some narcotics (for short term "rescue") in addition to the usual stuff I take
I push myself while recognizing my limitations.

...I would venture to say it's not a sign of weakness... and it is always a good idea to have goals set... however, the most important thing is to have a positive attitude towards meeting them... and even a positive attitude if you can't meet them... because thats when you'll need the positive energy the most.

I set goals all the time and I never ever get there. My new goal is to start lifting in the summer and meditate when I wake up every morning, I doubt I'll do that though.
IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!

I don't think it classifies you as a weak person. Some goals are harder than others, and it depends who is achieving these goals. I'm a "pretty easy to give up on things" kind of person, but in a situation recently in my career, I FINALLY reached a milepoint, and it's really satisfying. I wouldn't give up because it was a realistic goal. I say hang in there, no matter how dismal it seems.

Keeping the goals realistic is key.
If you're having trouble with large goals, set a series of small ones.
I'll use a weight loss goal as an illustration. Let's say a person is thirty pounds overweight. It's much easier to work on losing five pounds than thirty. When you've lost the five pounds, the next goal can be another five pounds.
Each time you reach a goal or milestone you set for yourself, it reinforces the act of setting and reaching goals.
