The book is really when Plato was still a student of Socrates. It goes as follows: Socrates is teaching a group of people including Plato and its how societies from and what rules and government you need to maintain order within a society. But also, reguardless of what type of government is in control, whether it be a republic, a dictatorship, or whatever, it can only go so far before it falls apart.

If read with the Communist Manifesto, it makes sense of why Communism fell in Russia. It's the best example I can give you. Plus, Plato's Republic is difficult to read because it's written the way the spoke in those times, so you have to read it a few times to understand it's teachings.
