I doubt it, but I think it's worth a thread.
Yes, I love opera, and classical music rocks. Anyone else wanna talk about Wagner? Mahler? Mozart?

youre not alone heckler. i try to hit the met at least a couple times a year. when i was in LA i had friends at the LA opera so i could go more often. you've named three of my favorite composers, i would have add vivaldi though. the four seasons is great way to start your day off. i still occasionally get comp tickets to the met, when i do i let you know.

I remember when the LA Opera was called the LA Music Center Opera, and down the road in Orange County you had Opera Pacific.
I love the Italian stuff, the Puccini, Verdi, etc, along with Wagner's "Ring Cycle".
As for classical composers, I guess Grieg and Mozart are my two faves. BTW, NY City Opera is a great place to see your first opera. It's casual, cheap, and a lot of fun. And it's in Lincoln Center.

While I'm not an opera fan, I do enjoy classical music and do listen to WQXR on occasion.

I enjoy classical, I prefer some of the more dramatic pieces... I have a CD called "Chiller" with all kinds of classical pieces that make you think "horror movie" and has a few themes from some horror films in it (like Poltergeist and Psycho). I enjoy Wagner, Pachebel, Ravel, Beethoven, Bach and a few others as well. Not too big a fan of opera, though.

There are many classical artists that move me, but none more than Beethoven. What a genius. I'm convinced that if he was alive today, he'd be a rocker.

I saw "Tosca" at the Met years ago, with Placido Domingo. Brilliant. And anytime someone jumps off a roof, bravo!

The opera singing orange that sang "Carmen" on Sesame Street scared the shit out of me.

In fact, any anthropomorphic fruit scares me.

I am huge fan of Opera, and have seen many performances at Lincoln Center, as you mentioned, Heck.
As far as classical goes, I think my personal favourite is Bach's ' Goldberg Variations' ( all 32 ) Like most composers of that era he was commisioned to write it..This opus simply makes the world a better place. ( Especially, Glenn Gould's recordings..and of course, the harpischord ONLY ...)
Don't forget that almost all of us first learned everything from Cole Porter standards to Opera---- from Bugs Bunny.

"I'm dreaming of a genie, she's a light brown hare...."

"Kill the Wabbit..Kill the Wabbit..." ( Wagner, of course )

..and "The Rabbit of Seville" was sheer brilliance...
..when Bugs is applying the hair tonic on Elmer Fudd's head?....CLASSIC.

I also love Korn, Pantera, Nirvana and the 'Ron and Fez House Band'.
:)

Heckler - I didn't know you were such an Opera Fan

GvacNoMore - Beethoven was an amazing composer, you should try some of the other Amazing Germanic composers like Brucker, Mahler, Brahms, Wagner, Schubert and Schumann - they are all Wunderbar composers

Dudeman - I noticed that when he started doing Fezitorials that Fez must be some big Opera Queen for him to choose the Trimphant March from Verdi's Aida

Irishkb - What symphonies did you like the most?

Fatty - you should try listening to Alban Berg's "Wozzeck" there's a lot of blood and killing in it, and the music is really wicked!

TrailerTrash - Bocelli and Brightman are not your typical opera singer. First of all, they couldn't sing over an orchestra if you paid them all the money in the world. They are miked so that you can actually hear their voices. Real opera singers are very very very LOUD! They have to be in order to sing over a 120 piece orchestra. Bocelli and Brightman would be great lieder singers though. Oh, and by the way, Charlotte Church sucks!!

Pootertoot - that orange scared the shit out of me too!!

Nycenice - I don't know what opera you're talking about. Most movies I've seen that have classical music behind them are Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" or Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana". As far as opera is concerned, there are so many instances - I'm not sure which one you would be referring to

Elle Quinn - I thought he was an absolutely amazing pianist, but can you actually can listen to Glenn's singing along? I can't stand his recordings because of that fact. Have you ever heard any of Bach's Passions? My favorite is the St. John's Passion - truly amazing.

Dudeman - 5th Element (Lucia di Lammermoor), Witches of Eastwick (Turandot), there's so much more, but I can't remember them all.

I used to sing Opera Professionally (yes, I actually got paid). I was a high lyric baritone. After my teachers and conductors told me to go to Europe, I told them, no thanks, and quit the scene. I still love listening to it, although I prefer symphonic music like Brahms, Rach, Bach, Delius, Elgar, etc...
A couple of friends of mine sing at the MET and after the stories they tell me, I'm so glad that I quit.

Besides, my career would have been nowhere in 20-30 years because all of the audience members would be dead. I was so sick and tired of walking onstage and seeing a sea of blue hair out in the audience.

I sang Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Figaro in il Barbiere di Siviglia, Guglielmo in Cosi fan Tutte, Marcello in La Boheme, and lots of other operas, unfortunately no Wagner though (the only Wagner I could have sang was Beckmesser in Meistersinger)

Agreed. I am a big fan of Domingo, along with Corelli and Caruso.
As for Sopranos, Callas, Stratas, Bartoli and Fleming.

God, I loved Corelli's Sound. His Nessun Dorma beat Pavarotti's hands down. It's too bad he was such a head case that it ended his career.

Have you ever heard Del Monaco? He was the King Kong of all Tenors. Also, Jussi Bjorling was another favorite of mine.

I like your taste in Sopranos. I've tasted a few in my time.

Renata Tebaldi is my favorite. Her and Corelli (with Bastianini) was what opera is all about.

I used to live right above Teresa Stratas. She would knock on my apartment and ask me to stop playing my drums. I neither play nor own a set of drums. I think she forgot to take her medicine.

My favorite Baritones: Leonard Warren, Rolando Panerai, Piero Cappuccilli and Dmitri Hvorostovsky

Yup. What a shithole. It looks great on the outside, but the inside is absolute crap. From the ridiculously low water pressure to the Asbestos removal, it certainly wasn't a choice Upper West Side Pad.

It was great to just go two floors up for a voice lesson, though.

The Opera that they went to see in Moonstruck was Puccini's "La Boheme". If you do take your girl to see any opera, take her to see this one first. It will definitely move her (and you).

Grieg is wonderful. Have you ever listened to Frederick Delius? If you like Grieg, you'll love Delius. Try to get some of his miniatures for strings. One of my favorite pieces is "On hearing the first Cuckoo in Spring" and "Brigg Fair". If you want me to email some mp3s to you, let me know. Also, Ralph Vaughn Williams has really captivated my attention more and more over the years. In school, I used to sing his music (The Call, Vagabond, etc.), but never really delved into his orchestral works until about four years ago. "Serenade for Strings" is one of the most beautiful pieces of orchestral music I have ever heard.

I realized I was a big fan of classical music when, while listening to the lovely melody 'Stranger in Paradise' I also knew that the original theme was from the Polovetsian Dance No. 2 by Borodin.

I stick to the popular stuff, but I do dabble: Rachmaninoff, Pachelbel, Vivaldi. A few years back when I went to visit my parents in Hawaii for a month, there was this radio station that had a write-in top 40 format or the like. Pachelbel's Canon was #1 for quite a while, followed by Yellow Ledbetter and the rest of the popular music of the day. It just goes to show you that a good piece of music, given the chance, is eternal.
