HK, I know this seems a stupid question but is there a cure for ADD/ADHD? Besides from poping a pill everyday the rest of your life?

I remember popping Ritilin for a few years. It helped me somewhat.

I have Learning Disablities, it does bother me some bit but I just deal with my weaknesses now and somehow turn it into stregthens.

ag, I thnk the consenous in
mental health is that few
conditions are 'curable' (in that
you have them, take medicine,
get rid of them). Think of the
treatment model of a chronic
medical disease, for example
diabeties. IMO this model applies
to ADHD.

Of course, that doesn't mean
that between behaviorial
changes, meds, or a combination
of the two that someone can't
manage the problem such that
life is not a burden. **make sure
you get a good, solid diagnosis
from a reputable provider, ADHD
is often misdiagnosed**

AG - It's not a stupid question.

As Captain Stubing pointed out, ADD and ADHD are often misdiagnosed. Everyone sometimes has a hard time sitting still or paying attention.

However, for some people, the problems are severe enough to interfere with every facet of their lives.

ADD is a neurobiological disorder affecting about 4% of school-age kids and about 3% of adults.

ADD can lead to failing in school, depression, conduct disordrs (I recall an article linking ADD to antisocial personality disorder as well). It is also linked to drug abuse.

It's important to remember that although ADD and ADHD are diagnosed by some doctors merely becasue kids are acting like normal kids, the disorder is itself very real and is nuerobiological in etiology.

There's an excellent web site with several terrific articles about the subject. Take a look at http://www.add.org/content

ADD and ADHD are not really "cured." Rather, people with the disorder can learn to adapt and live normal, happy, fulfilling lives. For example, some people with difficulty sitting still channel their excess energy into sports or exercise. People can learn to supress (consciously block) their symptoms.

About 1/2 of kids with ADD or ADHD continue to manifest symptoms into adulthood. The same medication used for kids works on adults as well, but medication is not needed in every case. Much has been written recently about the overprescription of children with ritalin. It was even spoofed on the Simpsons.

Traditional therapy and focusing and teaching positive outlets for the feelings help a great deal.

i've found that deep stretching or meditation (if you are into that) helps run off the excess energy.

ritalin does help alot. half my family is adhd, luckily, i'm not, but a very minor manic phase feels comparable from what i've heard.
