Why does my dog eat dirt?
 

Every night around the same time my dog goes into the backyard and eats big clumps of dirt from the exact same place. There is literally a six inch deep hole in the place where he eats the dirt. I asked my vet about it and he looked at me like I was crazy.
Does anyone else have a similar experience with their dog[s]?
The only thing I can think is that he might have some sort of mineral deficiency that the dirt is helping, or that some wild animal leaves his mark there and the dog is trying to get rid of it.
Is the vet right?
Am I crazy?
Worse, is my dog crazy?

I have no idea but my dog doesn't do that.

That's better than him eating his own crap, or even worse another dogs crap. I saw that happen at a dog park once, it was pretty gross.

Dirt eating dog over here too... Mine mostly does it when we are out at the camper in the woods. That really soft rich black earth, he digs into it to loosen it up then lays there and eats it. It is especially funny when I call his name and he looks at me with his black muddy face!












He's a poop eater too...gross...but only in the winter...he likes poopsicles. :blink: :eek:

You have to feed the dog. Go to the store and ask for dog food it comes in big bag and you put it in a bowl and the dog eats it. After that he won't eat dirt.

Alot of times dogs will eat stuff like dirt or in my case grass when they don't feel well believe it or not. It tends to settle their stomach. Probably from all that shit eating they do

You know what? The spot that my dog eats is that rich black earth too, which leads me to believe that it is a mineral thing.
Is your dog a Lab too?
