I used to skate in the mid-late 80s. Nothing crazy. Just street skating, steps, shit like that. There was a pretty cool skate shop on South St. we would hang out at, skate around in the street and fuck around with the Hari-Krishnas during the summer.
I dont remember all the brands and shit like that. All I know is I had a Jeff Kendall deck, rode goofy footed, and kept my trucks insanely loose. I liked to coast back and forth almost like I was surfing. And like spoon, I loved customizing the grip tape on the top of the deck.
I'm also a Democrat, by the way. I thought it was a still from "Newsies."

Back then, they were really thin and cheesy.
The classic Goofy Foot skateboard was even thinner and didn't have the spoiler-looking thing in the back. It had a couple red footprints on it. I think they cost, like, $5 circa 1967.
I think they were made out of birch. Some had racing stripes down the middle...

Yeah, probably.
On a side note, I just bought a pair of Vision Street Wear sneakers from a guy in England who bought a storage unit full of unsold skater merchandise from the 90's. I'm in nerdy heaven.

Skating was a passing fad for me when I was a kid.
The first skates everyone had were those crappy things that would clamp on to the soles of your shoes (they wouldn't work on tennis shoes). They were good for a laugh when they'd come loose on some kid as he went down a hill and was sent tumbling.
Then we got shoe skates and that was fun for a while. Black for boys, white for girls.

I tried, but with most things in my life when I didn't get it intuitively I gave up. I think my cousin has my board now.

When I was a kid I got one of those old wooden boards as a hand me down. I never skated. My buddies and I would just have one guy ride a bike back and forth, while two of us would try to roll it under the rear wheel of the bike, causing a cool crash.

It was the layout of the feet.
"Goofy foot" was a surfing term for someone left-handed, er, left-footed, and that was how the footprints on the board were placed, with the left one in front.

I was terrible at skating, I never had a good board, I never liked Christian Hosoi that much, and Danny Way was after my time, but because I'm a menopausal old woman, I almost shed a tear last night watching the end of the Hosoi documentary where Hosoi gets out of prison in 2004 and goes to watch the X Games and Danny Way did the Christ Air in tribute.

i met and skated with hosoi and el gato in maybe 88/89/90.......... i was more of a tony hawk kid tho so i was like whaeva
Back then me and my friends would drive around after practice and yell stuff like "SKATER FAGS!!" at the skateboarders. LMAOx51 Now we dress like they used to and listen to all their music! Heck, I even play Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on XBOX 360 from time to time!
