Oh so many to choose from! One day I'll make a comprehensive list, but the reason I began playing must always be #1:
Keith Richards. A rhythm guitar god, his lead playing on "Sympathy For The Devil" is still the nastiest I've ever heard.

lately it's been jon merithew from c average and justin trosper from unwound. oh, and mary water from little red car wreck. i love the way she plays guitar.
"no, don't be afraid (to protect everyone). love and courage are your friends. yes, yes, anpanman. how gentle you are! go, protect everyone's dreams."
Again, GVAC, I must wholeheartedly concur. When i hear Richards, there are times when I begin to weep with pure pleasure, He has a gift from God(He also has good taste in Irish Whiskey-Jameson's-like me)
MY OPPINION ONLY:
it takes more than speed and notes to make a great guitarist. I perfer players with feel/soul rather than teqnique. Bob mould is creative, Keith richards is god, Thurston moore of sonic youth is amazing, buddy holly has very unique and beautiful chord progressions, lenny kravitz has soul, but i guess my fav is still Jerry Garcia. like em or not, the dude unleashed pure beauty in his melodic leads and melodies...vernon reid of living colour very under rated as well` as is dan murphy of Soul Asylum.. sid miguiness of the letterman band rox 2. way too many..
till the next line~

Lot's of decent choices
presented so far hear, but I
still would have to go with
Stevie Ray Vaughn, since
Hendrix is a given. SRV was
absolutely amazing and
mesmerizing.
And while on the 3-name kick,
one of the best guys out there
right now is Kenny Wayne
Shepherd. Obviously he?s not
one of the all time greats,
but for a young kid, he?s
pretty f?n awesome.
Maybe I'm just a mark for
white, blues guitarists
But I certainly think those
two guys hold their own with
anybody.

reeshy, my man, I knew you had impeccable taste (in guitarists and Irish whiskey)! See if you agree with me on one of the most underrated guitarists EVER:
Finger-picker extrordinaire Lindsey Buckingham!
Special thanks to Lt. Rooster - a hero among heroes!

Welcome to the wonderful world of pervertedness, bro! And glad you can give ol' Lindsey his due; the man is a spectacular player but often gets overlooked because he plays in a "pop" band.
Hey, HordeKing - I think you finally found something I can agree with you on! Knopfler is another finger-picking god! What a shame Chet Atkins passed away a few months back and nobody even noticed. He and Knopfler made some beautiful music together.
Special thanks to Lt. Rooster - a hero among heroes!

I can agree on Hendrix, Clapton, and Eddie.
I would have to go with
Jimmy Page (for some of the greatest riffs ever created), and Stevie Ray,
just because.
