Okay, this may be a weird thread, but I wanted to know if anyone else's parent/family member has cancer. Obviously, if it is too hard for you to post, please don't!

AND THIS IS NOT A SYMPATHY THREAD --- P L E A S E!

My Mom has Cervical Cancer. She has had it for about 6 years. I was in 11th grade when I found out. She no longer has tumors by her uterus, but she has suspicious looking spots on her lungs. But she still goes for chemo ...

Thanks for listening ... ;-)

Mother - rare form of blood cancer - died suddenly in '96

Grandmother - colon cancer but its in remission now

Grandfather 1- lung cancer still in treatment, refuses chemo or removal of the cancerous lung

Grandfather 2 - Prostate Cancer, spead to the bones and died in '99

Yea I think I'm pretty fucked cancerwise I'll probably get it no matter what so I might as well keep on smoking drinking and not exercising

I had non-Hodgkins Lymphoma when I was in college. (The same stuff that killed Paul Tsongas but Mario Lemieux beat.)

Spring of 1992, a golf-ball sized lump popped out of my neck. I'm glad it was such an obvious spot or I might have tried to ignore it. Had surgery to remove the mass, was allowed to go back to school to finish my exams for the semester, spent the summer getting chemo, then every day of October getting radiation treatments.

I was bald of course (and I mean *all* over) and I only got sick from the chemo once, but the radiation was just about unbearable. The hair in the back of my head/neck has never grown back properly because of the radiation and I still have some mouth and throat issues (dry mouth, tight throat always makes it feel like I have to clear it). I have a scar on my neck that is fairly well-disguised. Coming up this October will be 10 years clean (after 5 years I was considered cured), so I'm good to go.

All I can say is that a positive attitude works wonders.

I wish your mom all the best. I would go crazy if someone I loved was sick. It was so much easier for me to handle it myself.

i in no way compare my experiences to the others here, but i worked in a large cancer hospital during medical school. i heard the whole medical and social history of each patient i came into contact with, and it seems like i can still remember each one. for example, i remember a patient who had a similar Non-Hodgkins story- basically woke up with a golf ball like structure sticking out of his neck.

Cancer really likes my family for some reason....

My grandmother had 4 children, my father was the only one not to get some form of cancer...yet anyway...How this woman hasn't killed herself yet is beyond me. She has lost 2 daughters to this horrible disease and may loose a son soon.....FUCK CANCER

My Aunt Patty died in 1996...she originally had stomach cancer, they cured it, then a few years later she died of breast cancer. She has 4 daughters...2 of them have found benign tumors

My Aunt Carole died in 2000 from Ovarian cancer. Now my uncle has lung cancer......and it still smoking

Oh and my aunt on my mothers side had skin cancer and her mother died of stomach cancer
So where's my piece of the pie? I have always believed that this is how I am going out...no doubt.

My maternal grandmother had colon cancer. She smoked and drank for a long while.

She survived the colon cancer, however, she had to have a permanent colostomy.

Seeing the colostomy equipment and after several issues my grandmother had with it after two strokes made me pretty much avoid smoking like the plague.

I lost both of my grandfathers to cancer. My
mother's dad had lung cancer which eventually
spread all over his body killing him in 3 months back
in 1991. My father's father had brain cancer which
also took his life in 3 months back in 1997.

IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!

My mom had breast cancer requiring a radical mascectomy. Following that she had utterine cancer requiring a hysterectomy. Both occured about 30 years ago and she's doing well, although she goes for checkups every 6 months.

My brother and father had skin cancer. That was easily treated b/c it had not meastisized. Once that happens it's bad news.

Cancer is no longer a death sentence especially if detected early.

I hope your mom feels and gets better soon.

i lost my grandfather in late 93'. he had lung and colon cancer and some clusters. the cancer had eaten a hole the size of a soft ball in his lung. there was cancer on his colon and cancer clusters around his heart. he did everything that the doctors told him to..radiation chemo, drugs. it was so bad that they only gave him 6 months. he went into remition and lived a year longer. he ended up dieing from phenomenia caused by the cancer. the classifed the cause of death as advanced lung cancer. i miss him so much. he was my favorite grandpa. spoiled me beyond belief. well, i'm starting to cry, so i had better get going.:(
