View Full Version : depression = creativity?

I have a question.
When I go through the depressive moods I
suddenly become extremely creative but lack the
stamina to do anything worthwhile.
I write it all down in a journal and look back on it
and think 'wow, this is terrific.'
How could I come up with all these great wonderful
paintings, and video storyboards, and poetry when
my mind is so clouded with horrible thoughts?

i experience the same thing too! actually years ago i wanted to go off prozac cause i felt it took away my creativituy and feelings" but that turned out horrible. the crative spurets i get i use them on immediate things like crafts and clothes, stuff around you so you actually get stuff done. at least you get cool shit outta a foul mood

I can't offer the "Why" to your question, but I can tell you I'm the same way. Being creative when you are happy, satisfied and complacent doesn't compare to what is possible when we are "anguished." It's a shame, I'm sure I"m not the first to say it, but for that reason, I"m only happy when I"m miserable.

i do the same thing all the time, i think that it might be because whe nyour ina depresiion you just want anythingto try to get your mind out of whatever has you in that position, therefore your mind broadens its horizons thusly you get shocked at what you are capbable of doing, i guess its just a way to escape from reality for a while

This is funny that this topic is brought up tonight...I was thinking something along the same lines only with the exception thinking if you are drunk/stoned are you more creative...I mean I do some of my best thinking when i am drunk, and write some of my best stuff when I am drunk...

How could I come up with all these great wonderful paintings, and video storyboards, and poetry when my mind is so clouded with horrible thoughts?

I think that this is your minds way of blocking out your problems...or finding a way to heal these problems...that is my theory and I am sure that HK will disagree...

Vixen,

maybe it is because you are forcing your mind to focus more than you would if you were not depressed...
you feel you have to focus harder to overcome the depressive thoughts and in reality you are focusing more than normal...

when I used to play sports and I had a fever or was not feeling well I felt I had to force myself to focus even more to play well, it seemed to turn out that I played a great game, I concluded that I was focusing more than normal to make up for what I thought was an obstacle...

does this make sense to you?

It's an interesting well-known phenomenon.

There are all manner of famous artists and novelists, inventors and philosophers whose greatest creativity and accomplishments came while they were depressed.

I didn't remember this when I last replied, but some of Picasso's best work were done when he was deeply depressed. The work during those years is called his "blue period" paintings and are displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Look for the one with the peanut butter stain on it. That's the one my kid touched...

I've found that extremes of emotion yield the best creativity, though when I'm really happy I usually just revel in that and don't put it towards artistic use! But as far as being depressed goes, I always feel that if I'm going to feel so bad, I might as well use that feeling towards something creative.

Those are my absolute favorite paintings ever
because I actually can feel his moods and I dunno I
feel like I could understand. For anyone who doesnt
know, the subjects in these paintings of that period
are often misunderstood, or outcasts and all of
them look so deep in thought but sad- there
beautiful but ugly...

I"m not the first to say it, but for that
reason, I"m only happy when I"m miserable.

Whydoes it seem so right to be so sad?

I actually wrote a paper on this phenomenom once because it happens to be also. the best you can hope to do is treat it like a huge wave, and your a sufer, ride the wave for as long as you can and be as creative as possible until you get too depressed and can't do any more

i cant say i can explain the phenomenon, i have my own theories, but there seems to have also been a connection with mental illness and the production of art. i can think of examples in every endevour of the arts.

visually, from van gogh, to rothko and basquiat.

musically from mozart to john cage, to morrison, to charlie parker.

literature from shelley to burroughs, to welch.

i write like a psycho with a hacket when i'm depressed...It's no fun being so dour with suicidal dreams, but it definitely spurs the creative juices...I was on celexia for about a year and wrote almost nothing...When I weened myself off the anti D the bouts of depression returned, but so did the creativity...

Truly living life is a never ending quest for honest expression. Expressing your hapiness, your sadness, your sexuality your humor etc. Some things are very easy to express honestly. Depression is one of those things where a lot of times no one understands why you're going through it and it's difficult to define so when your soul tries to show what it's going through it may not find the most honest way on the first try. It's a grey area in more ways than one, and this explosion of creativity is your soul trying to honestly express itself and what its going through, so it's possible for you go through more avenues of expression because what you're trying to convey is a complete and honest view of your emotional state.

Hey super vixen i think depression is cool, just as long as its not permenent , but only a times where you burst out!

One time i screamed at my self , grabbed a razorblade and shaved every bit of hair on my body.

THATS RIGHT!
Head, eyebrows, face, arms, stomach, my manhood, legs, and feet.

I walked out and looked like a "freshly circumsized dick".

my depressive episodes are NOT
cool
are permanent
and depressives do not usually
'burst' out. This is a crazy stigma
that everyone seems to think we
just burst out with anger or
sadness. That really pisses me
off. That entire post is so
uneduccated on the subject that
it actually makes me cringe.

dont ever call depression cool.
