i think people are secretly looking for someone to make them feel better, and they will infect everyone around them until they find the one person who can help them

Maybe they hope it'll elicit sympathy if everyone asks "what's wrong".

I must be the exception ... I DO keep it to myself, and it makes me sick ... physically sick.

People get into bad moods for variety of reasons, including tension and pressure. Often people deal with this pressure by transfering the feelings they have about the object causing the tension onto another object or person.
The classic example used to illustrate this, is a guy getting yelled at by his boss at work goes home and kicks the dog. The dog didn't do anything wrong. But the guy can't express his frustrations/anger/stress towards his boss. The feelings instead are projected onto the dog.

When I've got a lot of things going on that worry me, people usually ask me, "What's wrong?" The last thing I want to do is discuss my problem(s) with others. Still, I feel bad for giving a negative aspect to the social atmosphere. Great, now I have another thing to worry about! It's a neverending spiral.
