POWELL'S ADVICE ON HOW AMERICA SHOULD DEFEND ITSELF:

1. "The biggest s.o.b. on the block' rule. America should enter fights with every bit of force available or not at all." - Powell in Time, April 19, 2001

2. "Go in full force from the begining rather than escalate yourself into a quagmire. Or don't go in at all." - Powell in Slate MAgazine, March 27, 1999

3. "Overwhelming U.S force assures success at minimum risk to Americans in uniform" - Powell in Boston Globe, January 19, 2001

4. "Use all the force necessary and do not appologize for going in big if that's what it takes." - Powell in his autobiography regarding the US invasion of Panama.

POWELL'S ADVICE ON HHOW ISRAEL SHOULD DEFEND ITSELF

"Israel should withdraw its soldiers without delay, meaning now." - Powell, The New York Times, April 8, 2002.

Didn't he have that often shown soundbite in '91 regarding Saddam and handling the Iraqi's, something to the effect of "First we're going to cut it off, then were going to kill it." And then when it came to crunch time, he was one of the guys who said we shouldn't enter Baghdad and go after Saddam.

Cake or Death? Uh, I'll have the cake please.

Powell's statements were in regards to American conflicts, not Israeli conflicts. It's in our best interests to have stability in Southwest Asia. Of course, if I was Israel, I wouldn't agree with the any sort of troop withdrawal as long as my security was at stake. America, on the other hand, doesn't want this thing to escalate so that it's out of control. It's a case of do what I say, not do what I do.

Way I see it, Powell is just towing the Bush line, which is fastly becoming a failure.

I'm not expert on such matters, but I see the situation as Bush wanting to resolve the Israel / Palestine conflict by not resolving it at all; he just wants it to end, temporarily, long enough to appease the Arab countries so that he can invade Iraq and take out Hussein.

Of course it's all backfiring on him because neither side feels any obligation to end the fighting just because we say so (and rightfully so). And the Arabs, big shocker, are blaming us for everything again.

While I'd love to take out Iraq as much as the next rabidly pro-American jingoist, I'd love for us to actually just come out and support Israel at this time. It will NEVER happen, though.
