I work Full time in a local deli and Im proud of it. I make good money, for basicaLly doing nothing all day. I have enough money to pay my rent every month, buy food, and party my ass off every weekend! I might not be able to buy things that I once had plenty of money for but I make sacrifices, we all have to !

Its good that you're planning on finishing school 'cause maybe in those 2 years they'll teach you that its Lap of luxury, not lapse =)

As for me, right now I work for the government in my town, the pay is decent & the work minimal, but its not what I'd really like to do. I want to some day own my own bar, just rock out & meet new people everyday. It could be a real good time.

I was hellbent on being a professional comic book artist for a long time, but I got into computers. I still do comics, but professionally, I'm a computer technician, building machines, doing upgrades and even some network stuff. I'm working at a pisswater store on Long Island and it sucks, it makes me crazy. I wanna get something bigger, more money and eventually walk the Green Mile with my chick. But the job market sucks right now. Anyone looking for a computer guy?

We work with the Navy and the Department of Defense on the F-18 Hornet Fighter/Bomber. We do flight test on loads of stores(weapons) that get flown during combat and live missile shots. It is only one of two military test areas on all of the east coast.
But it took me 6.5 years of school and i have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering

Try asking for a computer tech job at a lab center. For example, Mt. Sinai, NYU, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Rockefeller University. They are always looking at upgrading hardware, software and network systems and always tend to be short in staff. Just an idea.
seagulbeagle- I think it's awesome that you work with plants. Recently I just moved into a new house and they left two rose bushes in the back yard. I think they are dying. Do you have any suggestions on how to care for them. what products are good/bad etc. What is a good fungicide cause these things are covered in spots! HELP!
Oh yeah, almost forgot. I'm a lab tech.

Went to college for Computer/Electrical Engineering and wound up working in TV while in school. After being with that company another few years after I graduated, I started with a firm in Jersey, where I am an assigned tech to companies (currently in NYC).

I would love to get back into television! I worked pretty much everything from the production/tech end- camera work, tape/editing, graphics, audio, technical director (I was even the supervisor when I left and went to my new job)....

It was always interesting, challenging and working live shows always provided some surprises. Maybe I'll look into getting back into it when the job market gets better.

I work for the government too and that about sums it up for me as well. I'm a mechanical engineer and I'm involved with construction management and facilities maintenance and repair. I'd really like to do more design work. The design work that we do get almost always gets sent out to a consulting engineer. I've applied to take the Professional Engineers exam in NJ. If I'm allowed to take it and if I pass it, then I'll probably try to find something a little more interesting.

" Singer-Actor / Cartoonist".

...I know, I know, a strange combo...but I have earned $$ doing all three.
I have been drawing, and worked in the theatre since I was a little kid ( I'm NO MikeyD ), and I still sing.

I teach singing and acting - to kids, mainly - so it winds up being alot of improv. It alternates between true inspiration and massive headaches!
I also free-lance as a Cartoonist and portrait artist. It's frustrating to draw by deadline, which is any artist's main dilemna.
I have done posters, illustrated a few children's books, worked as part of a team for various theatre set designs, and the usual boring Logo stuff. Lots of variety. I prefer to do work that is more personalized, and have also done Cartoon "Murals" ( I feel so pretentious using that word ) on the walls of the Rich and Bored.
I am still learning Photoshop, etc., but I am happy with my drawing space, and a good pencil sharpener.
Creative, yes..but I also will teach at a Tennis Club four hours a week, so I can play for free!!

I want to go in the army and be a combat photoagrapher. I'm going next year, but right now i'm stoned off my ass cutting my history class and taking pictures of hot girls. I don't have a job (well nothing legal) and I mooch off my parents and live in the basement while i finnish school, my dad pays child support until i'm 22. I'm 21 now and when i'm done with this semester i'm going to Flordia and enlisting. When I get out of the army I'm going to seton hall and live in the dorm and finish my history major and communications minor. Than I want to be a freelance war correspondent. And live out of suit case. The first place I would go would be Amenia to the fighting between the Armenians and the Azeris. If i didn't get much work I would apply for duel citizenship (i'm 1/2 Armenian) and go in to the Armenian Army and see if a war breaks out between the countries. If not I will come back to America and just chill and try to be a politition. Either that or open up a skate shop and smoke weed all day. Right now I have to go sober up and see if I can go to the second half of my 20th Century USII class or pick up some chick and go to the bar.

Fact: A cat will always blink when hit on the head with a hammer. Thats a fact.

Call me crazy boys, but someday i plan to quit my dad's steel mill and take the next bus to South Bend. Once there, after talking to coach Parseghian about how i was a highschool football hero despite my size and speed, and surely he'll let me on the team. Then i'll write back to my dead-end Midwest hometown and let everyone that i'm going to play football for Notre Dame. Does this sound a little far-fetched? It doesn't matter because what lack in size i more than make up for it in heart...that's right baby, right here, heart.

Simple question.
I do not think I have seen a what-do-you-do thread on here in a while, if ever.
So what do you do? What profession are you in or want to be in? I know we still have students on here so this included you as well.

Me? I am an Account Executive for a mortgage company. (mortgage rep.) best job I ever had. Small but growing company, VERY flexable hours and work schedual. I actually like comming into work. Only downside? It is a commision job.
I always wanted to be a cop though, that was before I worked with some of them.

Anyway...what about you?

I'm a client relations manager for a direct marketing/database company. We handle data enhancements and NCOA stuff for direct marketer's files, update their databases, and handle some mailing selections. The company itself sucks. In the 3 years I've been here, there have been major layoffs, paycuts, change in health benefits (for the worse) and no more bonuses. On the positive side, I have an awesome boss. She's like a second mom. She's always been good to me. She hooked me up with extra overtime when we still got it, and now she'll let me take days off and not dock me for it. And, she's a trip to go out and drink with. I also get to work from home, which is just the best!

Right now I am the lead developer for a consulting company who's main project is to re-design, code, and impliment a new database / computer system for an insurance company. We are also trying to tie this database in qith quickbooks to automatiucally reconsile and pay any bills. Along with that, I am my companys network admin and in charge or technology spending. I like my job a lot, and have great hours 8:30 - 4:30 and never a minute of overtime.
Part time, at nights from 5-6, I tutor 3 highschool girls in Algebra 2 and SAT math.

Once I finish my second degree, I may start to look for a job in the engineering field, but I am still undecided. I like where I work now, and I am not sure if I want to leave.

Environmental Consultant -

We do site assessments of commercial property. When one wants to purchase or refinance on a commercial property, the bank will hire us to do a thorough history, visual inspection, and State and Federal EPA and DEP search to make sure that there is nothing on the site, or has never been on the site, that could have cause environmental problems.

If we find evidence that there was, we then do soil and groundwater sampling to determine whether contamination is present.

It sucks and pays jack shit unless you own the company.

OK, enough with the fancy titles. I am the computer guy for a small private company. Kind of boring and shitty work, but there are plusses...

Being system administrator, I can override blocks on porn sites, I have alias email accounts on the company's domain. Since I have all of the passwords, etc I can pretty much do whatever I like. On slow days (like today) I can easily spend 4 or five hours surfing, downloading, posting...

As a quick aside, is there anybody out there who could write my a quick little script that can be activated by a hot-key? I would like to be able to hit, say, F1 and have a spreadsheet or something pop up in case the boss is coming, and I'm looking at filth.

Hottub or anyone else interested.

Take the following commands and paste them into a notepad document. Name the document workfile.vbs. Save it somewhere on your system, mine is on my desktop.

set WSHShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

Set appWord = Wscript.CreateObject("Word.Application")

appWord.Visible = TRUE

appWord.Documents.Open("P:My DocumentsWord Documentsmytestfile.doc")

Set appWord = Nothing

The only thing you need to change is the file location above to where ever you keep your word documents. My Documents are kept on the server, hence the p: before everything else. the mytestfile.doc is the name of the word document that automatically opens to make it look like you are doing work. Just point that directory to any filename you want.

One this is done and saved on your drive, right click on it and create a shortcut. You can keep the shortcut right next to the original file. Then right click the shortcut and goto properties. Inside there, on the bottom 1/2 should be a section for a shortcut key. Click inside there and then press whatever key combination you want. I would suggest using something like ctrl-altl-z. That is pretty easy to hit in a hurry.

This should work, PM or post here if you have any questions.

Industrial Scale Technician - Huh? What? Plumber, electrician, programmer, laborer, machinist, engineer, architect, general contractor and salesman.

I fix and install scales. Electric, mechanical, you name it. From the one in your doctor's office, to the truck scales on the side of the road. That's me. It's fun, I see all different types of stuff. Even if it's just for weighing the mail, pretty much every company uses scales. Yesterday I was at the Bronx Zoo installing a scale for weighing elephants, all the Benjamin Moore plants fill their paint cans by weight with my scales, Brookdale Nat'l Lab's where they developed the A-Bomb use my scales, Ruby-Foo's, Tao, The Russian Tea Room (before it closed) use my scales, Fairway Markets use my scales, Solomon Smith Barney (or whatever they're called now) use a shitload of my scales. See? All types of places. Meatpackers, bakeries, supermarkets, hospitals. Even NBC rented one recently for the Today Show. It's not something a lot of people think of, but scales are everywhere.

Oh yeah, and I'm tortoise-ing my way to the finish line of college.

I am an administrator for an overnight shipping company. I work for the director of customer relations for America. I oversee the operation of twelve call centers. I monitor the performance, statistics, forecasting, etc.

A majority of the work I do is technical. I install all the hardware and software for the offices in the area, as well as upgrades, maintain the network and provide help desk support. It is definitely a job where I wear many hats. I also do human resources and administrative work as well.

I'm a massage therapist. I also work in the field for an electrical contracting company while finishing school....doing basically clerical work, managing etc. We do all the electrical work for the major power plants you see on the Turnpike. We also have jobs at Merck(where I'm at now) and we've done the Jersey Gardens Mall, Essex County Correctinal Facility, and the Hudson Bergan Light Rail to name a few.

Come Febuary I will be able to call myself a Certified Massage Therapist and will hopefully own my own business.

Most people, who count on this board, know what I do and what I did for a living. I was a detective with the NYPD for **** years and now I am a registered nurse with a clinic who deals with heroin addicts. I just can't get away from those people!!!!
I have an opportunity to change my career (again) possibly working in the security field since I have the experience (I know how to shoplift). Seriously, I'm looking into a new federal job (since they can't discriminate against age...thank God!!!)

Years ago--like 20 years ago--I did something similar for some extra money: I changed the ads in supermarket shopping carts.

Pay was terrible, and the first time I had to do it in the snow I changed the ads, went home, and called the boss & quit.

Because I am a big pussy, is why.

Mike Teacher
06-14-2004, 05:52 AM
Well I should explain 'the Teacher' part. 1991-1997 = full time high school teacher in NJ. In taught at Monmouth U as a lab assistant/lecturer. Now I consult on the essays that ETS [Educational Testing Service; the peeps who make the SAT, MCAT, GRE, HSTW, and a few others] develops, and score them to see a] how the person is answering and b] how good the question is. Zzzzz, but I dont know of a better place to get the pulse of the state of our education system. I just finished working on the CAHSEE essays, its a california standardized test every high school senior took. And I worked on the No CHild Left Behind thing; shaking my head the entire time. '

'Ummm, sir? I think we're leaving some behind...'

Summer now, so its off season there

Asbury Park Press Board of Contributors: If I write an opinion piece, unless its a piece of shit, they publish it; yeah I even have that little photo with my byline.

Radio: Did Voice work for a station last summer, and as mentioned on my call Friday night, Cameron and I have been discussing show possibilities. In short he likes my voice and production, but im in NJ and the show is in VA, so for now I do stuff for R+F, mostly harass them with endless bits and audio; about 10% gets to air, and of that half is good, so by my estimate 19 out of 20 things I submit make it, and thats cool.

Proudest production moment: hearing the Fastest Hour opening and realizing 'ok there... and there... and there... those are my drops.' They last not even a second, but hey, they used it. Holy shit I should send you guys MY Fastest Hour Opening; I made one with my voice, they loved it but it had too many drops in it. Gotta find that; you think they use a Swoosh? You should hear the one I suggested? Its a recording of a fucking real fighter jet flyby.

Theres more but this is too long and self-absorbed anyway.

They just kind of hit the market. It is a project I have been working on for 2 years. I put together a bunch of bags myself out of awning material. My friends loved them. So I wanted to get them mass produced. Took out a loan against my house...flew to China like 15 times...and now...they are out.

I am from Philly, so we were in a few shops here. We got some good press out of the gate so we sold all of our inventory pretty quick. We just got a refresh of all the styles, so we are back in business and looking to expand into more retailers.

I am an IT Manager for a pretty large company. Although I never dreamed of doing this, it's a pretty good and tollerable job. I get to listen to R&F normally uninterupted, and sometimes I even get to post in the listening thread, so how bad could it be? I also am a Volunteer Fireman.

I never had a huge passion for any career growing up ... I wanted to be in Radio or a Chef, but they're too difficult to work your way up in those industries and I didn't have the drive or passion for it. I think I dreamt more about hitting the lotto so I could travel often than anything else.

I sell my sperm to fertility clinics. The pay isn't the best, but I get by. I'm just dreading the day someone realizes what kinds of horrific genetic dysfunctions I'm passing on. Then I guess I'll have to resort to selling empty soda cans to recycling centers, or kicking the shit out of the homeless and stealing the change they've spent the day begging for.

I drive a coffee truck. I basically drive around all day to factories, offices, and construction sites and sell people food drinks and snacks. Its pretty low stress and I can people watch all day long. I listen to O&A and Ron and Fez with little interuption while I do it. I aspire to do something else but I lack motivation and desire.

Lleeder, my mafiaso uncle once told me (as he got into his latest cadillac) that as long as you can sleep at night with a clear head about what you do for a living, you will be alright. then he puffed his cigar and went to bang his Gumare in AC.
