Gateway makes good computers and has great tech support. I own 2 gateways and an HP. No comment on the HP. My next computer will be ALIENWARE!

ever thought of building your own, I started building my own computers about 4 years ago and now I have a small company, we build custom machines, mostly geared toward gaming. If you have a tech. mind it's not that hard and you can put what you want in it. if you've got any questions about it i'd love to help. you don't have to get a computer with all that free shit software and an operating system disc that's been altered and you can't really use. i hate big computer company's if you didn't notice. :)

ag1247 -

Don't be scared when buying a computer. Howeve r you would be suprised at the amount of money you can save by getting a "clone" PC. You can save on the avg. $100 - $200 just by not buying a name brand. However If you are still interested in buying a Name Brand PC. Compaq and Dell are my recommendations. Dell puts together a good PC for a fair price. Compaq's are excellent in the abuse they take. I would stay away from Gateway - their service sucks. Packard Bell is also Trash. HP has nice units but expensive.

Here's your best bet. Buy a clone PC from a local shop (there are tons in the area)

If your looking to save money but not performance Get an AMD Processor The AMD athlon 1800+ is a nice one currently out. Dont Skimp on RAM (it's cheep now a days) and buy a quailty Video card.

It's also entirely up to what you want to do with the PC. (Games, Internet, homework etc...) If you want I can give you a list of things to ask people when shopping..

Gateways and Dells suck. I fix them in offices too often.

I say go with a custom job or an alienware. But if it's custom, make sure they use good parts, especially the motherboard
