Now, I understand that the had to do a CGI Yoda for the duel at the end of SW:AotC, but I perfer the muppet Yoda. CGI still looks fake, without depth.

i like the cgi better myself. you can do a lot more with it than you can do with a puppet.

This question can go beyond just Yoda and can be asked in general which is better- CGI or muppets and I have to say the muppets.
CGI often looks out of place, easy to spot and doesn't really mesh well with the rest of the characters. I mean it's definitely much better now than in the past but it still doesn't completely work for me.
There is something about a muppet/puppet/model that is just better. It gives it more realism because it's actually there, it gives it more personality, more details, and the characters actually interact with the creatures, not just a blue screen.
Think of Jabba from TPM and Jedi- the Jedi Jabba looked like a blotch on the screen, it couldn't even get close to the monstrosity and horror of the Hutt we were introduced to back in 83.
Understandable CGI is cheaper, easier to handle and you make more with it and do more with than with models but that doesn't mean it's better.

CGI still looks fake, without depth.i like the cgi better myself. you can do a lot more with it than you can do with a puppet.I agree with both these statements. It was obvious in Episode II that Yoda was CGI, and it was distracting. But when I set that aside in my head, Yoda was the best actor in the flick. CGI gave him the ability to express things without dialogue that the puppet couldn't.
But in the original movies, the muppet worked great, because he had such great dialogue, and didn't need expressions. The new ones have such bad scripts and acting that they need a CGI Yoda.
The fighting Yoda was too over-the-top Hong Kong kung fu, Matrixy too. It would have been even better if they had toned that down a bit.

I like the fact that for episode 1 yoda had a lot more detail in facial and hair characteristics, but he looks cross eyed in phantom. I think that with a little more work on the mouth movements the cgi yoda will become much more credible

i like cgi in that scene..but muppets also brign a oldness to a dieing talent in my opinion. Also i was wtaching episode 2 yesterday at my uncles house on his dvd (actualyl legal copy woohoo...pepsi coloa promotion i miss those guys lol) and i noticed that cgi tries way to hardto look real..you know?
the texture issometiems a problem due to lighting, and their movements areto smooth comapredto human movements that can be a little rough...at least in my opnion
