View Full Version : Should I Put Up A "Bat House"?
Every year, my friends and I would rent a cabin up in the mountains of Vermont and fish for trout 'till the cows came home.
While it was in a heavily wooded area, we'd sit outside all night and NEVER get any mosquito bites. The reason? There were thousands of bats flying over head. The locals told us that one flock of bats can eat up to a thousand pounds of mosquitos a night.
I've heard you can construct a "bat house" that attracts bats, and I've been wondering if it's a good idea.
They never bothered us in any way, and I don't believe the old wives tale about them getting tangled in your hair and all that. Is there any real danger of rabies?
I just know they are a million times more effective than those stupid citronella candles, which are basically worthless. Ditto for "Off", "Skin So Soft", and all those sprays and creams.

Sounds like a plan, Stan. Of course, you should build a birdhouse right next to it in order to attract some robins.

If youre sure youre not going to be skeered of em, then hell yea. Bats are dope. And if you happen to get fruit bats in it, Al can come out and sip their Ds.

i am scared of bats. when i lived in new paltz, they were everywhere. they would fly low and "buzz the tower", they'd crash into your windshields while you were driving. and i have long hair, so having flying rats dive bombing me freaks me out.
if you can stand the guano, the screeching, and the low flyers, build it. otherwise, just let nature have its way

If you want to build the correct habitat for bats you have to do it the correct way otherwise they will not gather there. First you have to hire a butler and make sure he doesnt tell anyone about it, second you need a really big spotlight and put like a cardboard bat in the middle of it, if you shine it in the sky then theyre sure to come.

Bat houses are cool, they work. Like you said, they will consume massive amounts of mosquitos. That and when you're trippin' they freak your friends out. Nice.

And don't forget, you should start wearing suits and acting very non-super hero like.
But seriously gvac, putting it up would put you as close to being Batman as anyone would ever hope for...so there should be no hesitation. Do it.
And it would give me an excuse to put up my Penguin pool outside... muwaha ha ha. Ha.

Go for it-anything that keeps mosquitoes away sounds great, plus, what a conversation piece. Personally bats really freak me out, but that's stupid, because I love animals. I just don't want a bat getting tangled up in my hair. I believe this comes from reading way too much Stephen King.

Hmmm....does this mean I'll have to change my sig pic and my "Captain America" persona?

GVAC - Putting up a Bat Cave is second only to building a Fortress of Solitude.
PLUS you get to make extra cash by selling the Bat Guano

I seriously think I'm going to do this. I found some great info on the North American Bat Conservation Society's web page.

Bats are great they freak me out though. When I bought my house there was a family of them in my attic, so the people before me never used it. I wanted the space for storage so they had to go. I had to find where they got in and seal it up, then put a cage over the window so they could get out and not back in. It all worked great, now they live behind my shutters. New problem is I want to paint my house this summer and have to remove the shutters. So I guess I should build one too, cause they are great to have around. And I've heard that its illeagal to kill a bat in NJ. Good luck G and thanks for the link.

Can we irradiate one of the bats and have it bite us so we can get super powers?

GVAC you are too funny - don't you live in one of the five boroughs? Are there any bats there?
