I think it's weird. She's 21 and when she's at home and we're just watching tv and chillin, she holds her pillow case (i guess it was like her blanket as a little girl) and she sucks her thumb. Is this normal for someone her age, or does she have some deeper issues. I just think it's strange.

it's the definition of wierd..... a girl with an obsession..........to suck on things.....could be worse i guess.
Maybe i can even offer a substitute for that thumb?

but is she hot?
Yup.

She lives with her man, so I know lack of things in her mouth is not a problem.

It is neither normal nor healthy for a 21 year old to suck her thumb.
Things like this can occur following a traumatic event (like a rape) where the person will seek comfort by regressing (moving backwards) to an earlier stage of development.
Your friend's, thumb sucking, coupled with her holding onto her pilllowcase (her childhood security blanket) strongly suggests some type of truama.
Something is seriously amiss and she should consult a therapist.

I have a couple friends who not only do that, but also move their lips when they read....

HK-I know first hand about her family life. It wasn't great. Her parents just got divorced this year (she acts more like a parent than them) and her little brother is having some issues too. She has seen a therapist I think just a few sessions though, but I doubt they discussed this seeing that she doesn't think it is weird. Do you think I need to bring it up to her? And if so, how do you think I should go about doing it?

Man, times have changed. You should all be ashamed of yourself.

Okay Im going to weigh in on this:
I am 21 and yes, I still suck my thumb with my "blankey" (Crunchy, for those of you who aren't scared of the pic!) I know there was some not cool stuff that went down in my childhood, but its nothing that I haven't already worked through.
At this point I consider it as more of a bad habbit than anything else (kind of like smoking) It just helps me feel less stressed out sometimes and it relaxes me and helps me fall asleep at nite. Im tryign to quit, but its very hard. Like when i see the rabbit it makes me wanna suck my thumb, but I can't get rid of the rabbit because of the sentimental attatchment I have to it. Ahhh, a vicious cycle!

Im 17 and i still sleep with stuffed animals...and when i sleep i hug a pillow...does that mean i got head issues too??
Maybe it is just a bad habbit..

I'm 23, and I also enjoy the occasional thumb-suck. As a child I didn't break the habit (not that I was trying) until I was 10 or so, so my mouth is still tailor-made for my right thumb - the knuckle fits right behind my front teeth. Anyway, with due respect to HordeKing, I don't really see anything wrong with it. It's less disgusting than masturbating! However, I don't masturbate in public (unless someone's paying me), so I don't know if I'd suck my thumb at Bennigan's or something. I would, however, not hesitate to do so among those with whom I felt most comfortable - so maybe the original poster should be honored that her friend regards her in this manner, and PROUD of her friend for not being afraid of what people think of her!! :)

SORKITTY - Cuddling a pillow (if limited to that) is fine.
SWEET201 - You wrote that you broke the habit at 10, itself a late age and the likely progenitor of lifelong orthodontical problems.
You also wrote that you occasionally still suck your thumb. Ocassionally is different from frequently of course, but the underlying problem is the same. It shows that in some way you remained at an earlier age of your development when contact with your thumb, a surrogate for a mom's nipple is the main source of reducing anxiety. As we age, our methods for dealing with stress are supposed to change to things more apporpriate with that age.
Why do you feel that thumb sucking is "less disgusting than masturbation." Neither is disgusting. But your linking the two is very interesting.
It's always good to discuss problems but the goal isn't just the discussion - it's doing something about it. If you feel that your issue is purely a matter of habit, try coating your thumb with the awful tasting solution (I forgot the brand name) available at any drug store.

There's no valid reason for you to stop sucking your thumb and, more to the point, sucking your thumb is very useful, unless it's affected your teeth to the point of health concern. If not, why defend yourself at all here? Thumb sucking among adults is a LOT more common than most people realize. Check out www.thumbsuckingadults.com for proof. Meanwhile, just carry on doing what is far better than most alternatives.

What are the odds that someone brand new to the board will find a 3 year old discussion, have something to comment on it, and have a website that referrs to it?
