Because you live in NJ.

You expect the water to be delicious in a state where the air comes in Regular, Thick, and Chunky varieties?

Well, POOTERTOOT has a good point but there is an additional reason.

A separate thin metal pipe connects the refridgerator to a water source - another metal pipe into which a hole has been cut and the two pipes soldered together.

Rust, sediment and even lead has 2 vectors for entering the ice pipe to the fridge, the draw tube and the line to which it is soldered.

There are a number of filters available to remove the impurities of water entering the draw pipe. They are installed at the soldered joing and may make the ice taste better.

Perhaps winning your fridge on an EBay auction (seller name: jeffdahmer70) wasn't such a good idea after all.
