View Full Version : Why your dog circles around
HK: I heard you last night talking about your dog who circles around before he sits down. I don't think it is superstitious at all.
It is a survival mechanism precircuited into their brains. When dogs bury bones they do so out of evolutionary instincts they have. Before dogs were domesticated they were wild and ate wild animals. If they didn't finish their meal in its entirety, but wanted to come back to it later, they buried the meaty bones so that other animals couldn't smell it and take it from them.
The reason why your dog circles around before it sits is because outdoors on land in grass there are bees, snakes, etc. in the grass. So before a dog would sit down, by circling the area, it would scare these creatures away so they wouldn't get bit. They may also do it just to make their space comfortable.

I thought it was the toxic accumulation of Alpo's "meat by-products".

You're talking about dogs lying down. I'm talking about superstituous behavior.
Superstitious Behaviors are random behaviors followed by chance reinforcement. This behavior is then repeated over time. In other words, things that have NO use or rationale whatsoever, that are done b/c of a learned conditioned response. An example of this in a dog is circling before going outside. At one time after circling the door was opened. The dog isn't aware of the lack of causality and attributes the circling to the door opening.
Dog's suceptiblility to superstitious behavior is used by dog trainers througout the world including the police department. However, since since the superstitious behavior is as a result of opperant conditioning, (i.e. without an unconditioned stimulus), much of the behavior learned is unwanted.
Take a look at this police dog website for an interesting application to police and hunting dog training.

HK: I thought your dog circled before he laid down. I know a lot of dogs do this.
I am sure that it is probably easy for dogs to fall prey to superstitious behavior, but I do know that some of their behaviors that humans may think are odd are actually prewired survival mechanisms.
In humans, superstitions can become quite a burden and it is best to nip it in the bud as soon as it starts.

My brother told me it has something to do with the gravitational pull and they have to blah blah blah blah....*snoring*

Just doing her part to make the boards alot cuter
Underneath her skin and jewelry,
hidden in her words and eyes
is a wall that's cold and ugly
and she's scared as hell.
Trembling at the thought of feeling.
Wide awake and keeping distance.
Nothing seems to penetrate her.
She's scared as hell.
I am frightened to.
Wide awake
and keeping distance from my soul.
I am scared like you.

dogs cricle before lying down for several reasons, in addition to what you have said above (being instinctual), it also suits the curvature of their spine better.
But i do not think this is what HK meant when he said "superstitious." I think he meant it more as a conditioned reaction.
