Everybody knows that the babies who portray newborns on television and in films are at least a month old. What I'd like to know is, in a birth scene, what do they use to make the baby look like he just popped out, all covered with blood and vernix? Is it makeup? Ketchup and cream cheese? And what kind of parent lets someone strip their precious, innocent spawn and smear him with icky goo anyway?

Hmmm, interesting question.

I wasn't able to find any information about the composition of the product used, but I can tell you that the newborns are almost always at least 3 months old! Some states, (such as NY will not issue working papers to a child below that age).

Studios casting for a newborn look for a premie who is 3 months old and still looks relatively small. Most of the time though, you can tell the kid is not a newborn.
