I have never given a tip to a gas attendant that just pumped my gas...until yesterday. I was in the car with someone and the total for gas came to $11.50...Now...this other person in the car told me I should just tell the dude to keep the measely 50 cents for himself. I did so and the dude was a little shocked.

Now to my question. Does it make me a bad person because of the fact that I don't tip gas attendants, and never have before?

P.S.-Yes...in New Jersey we don't pump our own gas.

I grew up in Jersey, and I was under the impression that there's no need to tip there cause it's always full service. I remember once going to Pensylvania and getting full service, and when I didn't tip the guy he looked shocked! Guess it's just another reason why it's good to live in Jersey. Um, unless you work at a gas station.E>

I never did in NJ. I think my mom only does like you described. Having them keep some of the change. I don't think we are obligated to since we don't have a choice of pumping our own gas even if we watned to. In Texas there are very few places that have Full serve and they just charge more for the gas to have someone pump it for you.

So, no. It don't make you a bad person. :)

I must add...
The other person in the car with me *cough cough Gvac cough cough* thought I was an animal for not giving attendants a tip. I guess we don't all swim in our money a la Scrooge McDuck.

Sourkitty- You actually are supposed to tip the garbage man and mailman at Christmas time. You leave an envelope in your mailbox or taped to the garbage can. My family does it every year and I had no idea. There are so many tipping rules I don't know about. I found out your also supposed to leave a little tip behind for the maids at hotels.

I've always wondered that myself. Whenever I fill up on the turnpike I've never tipped because full service is required by law whereas it's optional elsewhere.

However, I'll tip the guy when I go up during Thankgiving/Christmas.

i dont tip cashiers that work in dunkin donuts or other places, that make themselves tip jars. half the time, those people are so nasty and slow and couldnt care less about you. however, if somebody goes out of their way to be nice and seems very genuine, and if i just happen to be in that good a mood, i will give them a little tip.

It's okay, Rich.

We all knew you were a bad person before this

Seriously, though..It is sometimes difficult to know
when to tip.

I would only tip a gas attendent if he did an above average job. That's the only way I tip waiters/waitresses. They have to do above average to get a tip or else its really not a tip its just extra money.

I never even heard of tipping a guy who pumps gas. They are salaried employees, not like waiters and waitresses, whose wages take tips into account.

Of all people to see it my way, it's Tom Poo! Who woulda figured?

It's true though...some poor bastard is out there in all kinds of foul weather pumping gas, and I feel it's almost inhuman NOT to tip him. And when the amount comes out to a figure with change (e.g. $11.25) I ALWAYS round it up and at least let the guy keep the change.

We have the cheapest gas prices in the tri-state area here in Jersey, and it's full service, to boot. Throw the guy a buck and make his day!

When you go to the hair salon, you're supposed to also tip the girl who washes your hair, and the girl who helps the hairstylist do the blow out. I usually give them each like $2.

i tip my eyebrow wax lady $10 (it costs $10 for the wax) becuase she does an excellent job and she remembers it every time I come in. If someone gives me very good service, I always leave a large tip, becuase they remember you when you come back in (especially hair salons, nail places etc etc) and you get even better service

never tip. Maybe I should? But I go there BECAUSE
it is full serve, cheap. <P>

here's a tip for gas attendants..."Stop pumpin gas for a living."
we need a tip list. i think waiters/waitresses should recieve the largest tip. (maybe 30%)
then taxi guys (a dollar for every vowel in their name)
gas attendants (a buck)
crack hoars (a little extra if they said "aye poppy")
assistant to crack hoars (if they tell hoars to say "aye poppy")

I dont know if this has been said, nor do I know if its true for New Jersey, but in Connecticut (and I believe new york as well) the price of gas in a full service lane is a 5-10 cents higher per gallon, this way there is no reason to "tip" your attendant becuase its already included in the price of a job.

I'm not cheap or anything, but I honestly don't think you're supposed to tip the gas attendant.

However: you SHOULD tip your starbucks barista (especially if you're ordering an espresso bar drinks) those people are basically waitstaff who bust their ass and NO ONE TIPS! BASTARDS! (And dont give me that "well the coffee is so expensive crap either!) I no longer work there, but the pay was so low we counted on the tip jar at the end of a week!

ok this is the first I've heard of this tipping gas station attendants. I am by no means cheap. I tip all the necessary people: waitress', salon people, valet parkers, and my pimp but I have never ever tipped a gas man. Their job is to put gas in my car...they get a paycheck for that and don't live off of tips. It's not my problem they have a shitty job.

And I'm certainly not tipping Habib for taking a job from a 16 year old kid. I fucking hate gas stations

Since I never heard of the concept of tipping a guy who pumps gas, I asked a guy who does it for a living.

He said that he has never recieved a tip for pumping gas, but he has gotten tips for putting air into tires.
