View Full Version : Ron&Fez's Philosophy of Art

I'd have to say that I definitely agree with Ron's opinion that art post-1968 is awful. I'd even take it a date earlier to the 1050s with Jackson Pollack. The school of Abstract Expressionism has to be one of the largest frauds of the cultural world. According to WonderBoy's opinion that art suggests emotion in works of abstract art understates the fact that art should be visually meaninful as well as semantically. Shouldn't art have form, rather than mass?
Anyways, maybe I'm just stating the obvious, but that was one damn good analysis by the boyz. My Art History Professor would have been proud.
By the way, my cat's breath smells like cat litter.

Ha! That should be 1950s,not 1050s. I happen to like Medieval Art. Well, this big orange ball of orthographic failure is vamoosing.

Wonderboy is an Art School sissy boy.
I remember them talking about how Federal Funding should STOP for crap art like this too. And I agree.
Crap on a pedistal and call it art? Yea, right. Every newer piece of art I've been exposed to looks like shit, and I don't get "IT" whatever it may be. I don't think artists get it either, they just like to act better than people who don't get it.

To say ALL art has validity is foolish. There are thousands of people out there with recording contracts, and I wouldn't give them the honor of calling them "musicians."
Ditto for the majority of so-called "artists" we have today.

Good posts all. Wonder Boy seems to be a likeable kid but he didn't get his parents money's worth out of that art school. He sounds like he is either parroting something he heard from one of the self-important (those who can't do, teach)ers or from one of his punk rock friends who thinks that anyone who gets a contract is a sell-out.

..orthographic failure ... Billyjo, pleez stop uzing them ther complikated werds that make our heads hert

Me too. I seem to recall that some of the greatest artists and musicians in history were able to create masterpieces without public funds.

I remember their discussion on Federal Funding. The government should award these grants based on the work first, not on the proposal. I could propose a full-length painting depicting love, and then end up jizzing on it,and saying, how do ya like my art now?
As for Wonderboy and the sell out issue, all artists are commissioned. Even Michelangelo was commissioned to paint the Sistine Chapel. How the f$#k else can they survive. Damn punk kid. Living in Kajagoogoo land.

Good point, GVAC. I was trying to make a paralell and think up an argument, and this is a great one. Plus as a stuggling Musician, it hit close to home.

Starving artists make the best kind. You can't pay someone government money and "make" them an artist. But modern art is definitely an viable extension of the society we live in. Photographs and movies and TV fill our lives...so all of our paintings don't need to record things exactly as we see them. Not to say there's not a place for things like that...shit, I think Norman Rockwell was a great artist. But abstract modernism has it's place...so you don't "get" it...someone else will. As long as they painted it on their own money or private funds, hell, do whatever you want.

Filmmakers, comedians, writers, musicians; all these artists have to find day jobs. Why not visual artists?

Agree completely, GVAC.
And maybe more importantly, there are tons of musicians out there who every day ply their craft even without the beneift of a recording contract!
