I think Janice is the personification of evil. She is by far the most narcissistic, selfish, manipulative woman I've ever seen on television or film.
I hate her so much.

As far as the episode goes, although not action packed or full of bile, it was still pretty good. I especially liked the scene where Tony decided to leave Dr. Melfi. I though it was one of the best single scenes in the show's history. Once again the duplicitous preview leaves you horny for next week, but I guess i wuld be anyway.

I agree. That's what makes her such a great and well written character. I hate her too. But you gotta empathize with her a little, considering she most likely wants a change of pace after spending a few months with a Crisco coated fist up Ralphie's ass. My guess is Bobby is strictly a missionary type guy who likes a hummer now and then. I just can't see him looking forward to his annual prostate exam the was Ralphie must have...

Well seeing the conclusion of 12/1 Soprano's we see a lot of changes in the making. I think the best part of the night involved Paulie going up to Carmine and finding out that Johnny Sacks is nothing more than a player. Pumping Paulie for info and giving Paulie false hopes of being able to jump ships...Also how funny was it that Paulie rubbed out that old lady. I am sorry but I was dying laughing watching him fight with that old woman.
The NY people fucking with Jersey's pockets by sending in the union is going to create lots of problems. And luckily for Tony, Christopher gets released next week so he has someone he can trust.
Ill be honest, I didnt pay attention to what products got plugged tonight...the only thing I want to say is "Billy Budd". That was also funy watching Carmella flip out over it being gay or not...

Geeeeeeze this was a very very good episode. I was wondering at first why wasnt Janice in it at all, but they already unravele her whole part last week in a fantastic job.
This episode was also pretty funny as well. Im with you doogie, I was laughing my head off when Paulie practiclly scoop-slammed that old lady and then she was screaming "AHHHHHHHHHHH" but the halarious part was the "AHHH, OHHHHHHH NOOOOOOO, OHHHHHHH NOOOOOOO" AHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!
also: "Hey Im not gay" "your not?" "NO!"
During the first couple episodes of this season I was uneasy about. Once Paulie came in, things got VERY good.

Great episode....AJ's fart was hilarious... I hope they don't whack Paulie. His scene with Silvio was great. I was hoping for a small scrimage. Well at least someone got whacked tonight. Paulie is such a cheap SOB he had to steal from the old lady, then kill her. Unfuckenbelievable. Is Carmine or Johnny going down? And no Janice. I could have done without the Carmella soap opera, but at least it did'nt ruin the show. Here's hoping for a great finale. <P>

I thought this epsiode was absolutely dreadful with Paulie as the only saving grace. The whole season was based on the Carmella/Furio Carmella/Tony relationship deal and they copped out by sending him to italy good job wasting about 30% of the season and ending that segment with no fanfare at all.
Plus the russian thing is way out of control they had dealings with that guy over a year back (show time line) and no mention is ever made even though the russians launder tonys money. Its like if they drop out tonys laundering of money then the russians are therefore out of it as well. Meadow was used only to further the Carmella storyline not as an integral character, and suddenly she goes from queen bitch/teary eyed no college take time in Europe meadow to the what a woman she is again w/ no explanation.
To me this season has been ok but they seem to have too many storylines to deal with to wrap it up in a 75 min finale this season and one more after

I think it was done simply to get him out of the "valley" that his relationship with Tony was in. When Carmine didn't recognize Paulie at that wedding reception, Paulie may have realized that Johnny Sack had been using him only as a source of information. If you remember the last episode from last year, Johnny told Paulie that Carmine "was asking about you". This probably made Paulie think he had a better opportunity with NY but instead all he did was sell out NJ. Now he's trying to cover his ass from Tony.

i dont think tony's gonna tell carmine about sac's plans, simply because tony and sac go way back. sac's machiavellian tactics are brilliant. besides, the banana boat may've soured tony with the don forever.
if there's anything i learned, its that booze, pee, and chopper blades dont make for good judgment. furio had to bolt, he lost tony's trust then and there. sucks. he was such a good thug. 'no bitch to me'.

suddenly she goes from queen bitch/teary eyed no college take time in Europe meadow to the what a woman she is again w/ no explanation.
I think the best explanation for that is that she got away from her insane household, and was able to be herself without her psychopath parents breathing down her neck every 2 seconds...
This could be a plotline too, like Tony and Carmella's crap will end up ruining what she's been able to build for herself, but we'll see...

I actually thought this was a great touch. While I was in high school, and attended my first couple years of college, with my parents footing the housing bill, I argued with them constantly and seemingly went out of my way to do things that would shock/piss them off. Then I got my own place, started paying my own way for a lot of things, and suddenly I found I missed/respected my parents a lot more, and our relationship improved drastically.

I have pretty much said that i dont need the violence to make the series great like others, but i feel like they have copped out of a lot of storylines but i think the reason for this is that there will be a sixth season.

I understand that Mojo but what im also saying is Tony launders his money through the russians and since this season is roughly one year after the end of last it makes no sense that they have done nothing involving that relationship. Even if they do something with the russians now it is still over a year from anything happening and it will come out of the blue.
I do like having storylines to look forward too, and the hanging story arcs, but it seems they explain some of these things way to easily the same way Oz has been the last couple of seasons

You're right, and this is the one thing that has bothered me each week. Whenever the end credits roll, I just scream "but where's the goddamn Russian?!?!" and punch a cat, ANY cat. The Russian mob boss went out of his way to saw how his drunk buddy was such a good, trusted friend and how much of a badass he was. Too much setup for him to be just lost in the woods. But he's been mentioned on the show a lot lately...he'll come back into play before the series ends.

It's official........the "Soap"-rano's now suck. All those actors on the show saying at the beginning of the year " Yeah, season 3 might have been a disappointment, but just you wait for season 4...it's gonna be good". Well you're all a bunch of liars !! David Chase is a hack writer....he can't even tie up loose ends ( don't even get me started on the Russian ) before he clouds your picture with new and un-explained characters. The show should have stayed to it's roots.....mob stuff. Two minutes of mob story, then 10 minutes of soap opera. Eh, they didn't resolve the Russian thing LAST season, so I wasn't really expecting it tonight. I'm not betting on ANYTHING until the last episode of next year.
As for tonight? 'EFFIN' BRILLIANT. Easily my favorite episode since "Pine Barrens". This is the stuff this show is made of, what happened between Tony and Carmella. And good for the writers and creators for not catering to the idiot masses by whacking major characters left and right. People complain about the believability of the show but then turn around and expect goombahs to be dropping left and right with two behind the ear. Grow up, suck it up, and enjoy what little time this show has left. It doesn't get much better than this.

I have mixed feeling about the Finale. On one hand it was probably the best episode of the season for the deep plot between Tony and Carmella. It was a great way to end the season. I think if Tony didn't call off the whacking it would have made the episode more exciting. I was hoping for more exciting finale, but all in all it was a great episode.

Honest question time.
For the people that didn't like this season, how would YOU fix it? I'm asking without any malice, I'm just curious. Some people don't like the acting and/or the writing, so it's pretty clear that to them there are many, many problems. But other than that, the general complaint seems to be that not enough people are getting killed, or especially that there's "not enough action". Can that really be the case? Would that many people be more satisfied simply by seeing bodies drop and some poor schmuck taking a beatdown...EVERY WEEK?!?

tony shoulda never whipped the assemblyman. that way, we wouldnt have gotten this letdown as a finale. it was a great episode. edie falco just won the emmy. but honestly, we dont watch the show to see THIS family's turmoils. at least not so much of it. its gonna be a long year.

I want to see a storyline taken from start to finish. I don't necessarily want to see more blood, but I want more nuts and bolts of the business that's going on. I want the family story to be more consistent. The show is obviously not real time, but Meadow went from being a whiney little girl to a woman with absolutely no real reason why. I want to know what the fuck is going on with Adrianna, and why it was just in the back drop when it was probably the most important thing this season in my mind.
The season had way too many people completely flipping for no apparent reason. The entire "offing" of Carmine thing came up with no real backdrop.
The whole development of the storyline is just getting lazy. We're supposed to assume things are going on, and just suppose why. The best seasons always filled it in, it doesn't take that much.

David Chase, leave.Steve Buschemi and Van Patten guy, take over..
Van Patten is one of the directors. He just directed the finale.
Buscemi's also a director. He's only directed two of the episodes (And they looked great). He and Van Patten have never written any of the episodes (Though Van Patten did contribute to the storyline of the excellent "Pine Barrens"). I think you want Robin Green and Mitchel Burgess, who wrote the episodes this season where Ralphie gets whacked and Christopher goes into rehab, as well as the great one where the whole horse racing storyline was introduced. Chase has only co-written four episodes this season, the finale included, and only wrote the season opener by himself.

This season has covered less than a year in "Sopranos" time. It would be wholly inconsistent and inaccurate for the FBI probe to be rushed. They need exactly the right kind of evidence to put a guy like Tony away, or even his lieutenants, and Adrianna is the only "in" they have at this point. They need to ease it along and gain her trust, let her feel fully comfortable, so she either gives something up willingly or totally slips up and blurts out something incriminating. Remember, they already had the bugging of Tony's house fail last season, so they're not taking any chances. If they push her too hard so that she bolts or gets killed, they're back to square one. It's hardly been dropped, and will just roll over into the next season. There's no feasable reason for it to be "finished" already.
Meadow went back to being more of a supporting character this season, and I think it just seems like she's growing "suddenly" after all the attention she got last season. I really don't see her acting like a woman, just a girl TRYING to be more mature as her college life goes on. I can relate, because I did exactly the same thing when I got myself an internship and my own place the second year. I went from being the biggest spoiled kid around to actually wanting to make something of and for myself. But maybe that's just me.
Johnnie Sac's resentment of Carmine has clearly been festering since he was refused the chance to crack down on Ralphie halfway through the season. He see's his share of the Esponaut(sp?) being lost in the tug of war between Tony and Carmine, and he's not going to stand for it. He explained it to Tony..."Carmine has been shorting me for years. He makes bad decisions. He's old. He plays favorites. I'm sick of it." Works for me.
And personally, I've never felt the show laid out ANYTHING for the viewer. It's always made me think for myself and "work" to keep up. It's not like "ER" or "Law & Order", where everything needs to be spelled out in a single episode so it NEEDS to make sense. "The Sopranos" world fully represents the old idea of "shit happens", and sometimes it just does. The show challenges the viewer, and that's why I've loved it from day one.
But again, this is all just my view on things. Everyone else can go with what they want. I was just very impressed with this season, and the finale. They could have taken the way out, and try to feed the whims of all the new viewers that would be watching because of the show's "buzz", but they didn't. I thought they remained true to the characters, and I can't wait to see how everything winds up 13 episodes from now.

I knew the russian chick was going to fuck tony over, goes to show you cant be fucking with those russian chicks. The tony vs. the lawyer was amuzing. The boat drops anchor, and out come the speakers
Tony sounding very much like his old dead mother after listening to carm bitch, he says, "awww poor you" (i used to love when she said that)
and now for this week's Product Placements:

Im still watching HBO, waiting for the rest of the episode to come back on. The episode wasn't bad, but definetly not for a finally.
The need three solid story lines: One with Tony's family, one with 'the family' and then one with Tony and someone else (wether business or fucking, really doesnt matter).
Now then they the writer of the Sopranos should take advice from Larry David on Seinfeld episodes and the brilliance of making seperate plots come together and make something maginificent. THAT IS HOW I WOULD CHANGE IT!
Anyways, now that the season is over...I can honestly say that either The Ralphie episode or the one last week was my favorite...overall, defiently not a BETTER season, not sure yet...about it being worse.

Exactly. That's what's to be expected. Think back to the first season's finale. Sure, Tony survived the hit, but his Mom wasn't dead, and neither was Junior. Who was the head of the family was in question. Nothing was "wrapped up." Nobody should be able to say that the first season ended with them not wanted to know what happened next with a straight face. The only finale that essentially settled "everything" was the last two episodes of the second season. In theory, the whole series could have ended right there. Otherwise, seasons 1, 3, and 4 have all ended with dangling plotlines galore.

I enjoyed this episode. I wouldn't necessarily consider it season finale material, but I don't really have strong objections to it. There were a lot of things that bothered me, regardless of whether or not it was a season finale.
1) Baccala and Janice smooching and dancing like an old couple...what the fuck? I hate her so much. How she goes from pyscho-slut shoving things up Ralphie's ass to goodie housewife is beyond me. It's reprehensible.
2) You can't beat Tony putting a fist through the wall. Man that guy has issues. My question is why now? I think Carmella is a total hypocrite. She knew this kind of thing had been going on for years. I doubt Furio would be anymore loyal to Carmella if he was in Tony's place. Tony was so right...all she did was bitch and ask for money. She enjoyed the lifestyle that Tony gave her and I agree with his point that she knew what she was getting into when she married him. Now she grows a conscience about Tony's affairs when her fucking affair with Furio didn't work out the way she planned?
3) It's a matter of time for Paulie. I think he looks TOTALLY ridiculous now...like a little child looking for acceptance. I hope he dies soon. I don't think he's even funny anymore, just pathetic.
4) Anyone buy Chris's 180 from drugs? Isn't heroin rehabilitation a little more difficult than a short stay in a clinic?
5) What the fuck is Joey Sachs problem? How could Carmine miss how hot headed he was all these years? He really has it in for Carmine.
Well, I guess I have to wait another 2 years for the next season. This was a good season, I think. I enjoyed it. Could've been better, but isn't that the nature of entertainment? Is there such a thing as a perfect television show? (Besides Curb Your Enthusiasm...)

I am surprised that so many people did not like this episode. What were you expecting? A Dallas-type cliffhanger? Part of the appeal of the show to me is that the plot lines and developments happen like real life. Shit comes out of nowhere and alot of stuff may or may not be resolved, just like life. I think Chase is a terrific writer, I suggest that anyone who doesn't agree pick up the book of scripts that they sell in book stores. Chase explains why he writes the episodes the way he does, each episode is made to stand alone like a small movie.
Things I liked about this episode.
1) Tony refuses to be Johnny Sac's pawn and sees right through him, this gets Sac even more pissed.
2) When the guy with the glasses gives the FBI the finger.
3)Tony never hits Carmela. Remember, Tony has killed several people with his bare hands. Carmela refuses to be afraid of him, and his living is intimidation. Spousal abuse is a touchy issue in the Italian community.
To me this was the third best episode this season behind Ralphie getting killed and the intervention.

I understand what you're saying about it being a show about him and this being an important episode. I am not finding it credible in a lot of key points anymore. The first two seasons I would watch and think, that's exactly what I would do, or that's right on.
This season this "love affair" with Furio developed out of nowhere and many other key plot developments just happened and I didn't find them to be credible at all.
It's one thing to leave elements to the imagination, and another completely to simply ask the audience to accept these things and not offer any reason why and not take them anywhere either.
There were maybe 4 episodes this season which I felt worth worth watching, but still not enough to make up for the complete lack of direction that the season seemed to have.
Furthermore, I don't think I should have to think that fucking hard to enjoy the show. I never had to before. It's great that you can take more from the show if you care to, but if I just want to sit and be entertained, I don't think it should be that difficult.
The thing is, not everyone can think so deeply about a TV show. The majority of people want to be entertained. If they entertained the masses and threw in extra goodies for the hard core fans, it might have been better.

Easily the worst written and most poorly acted one yet.
I've got to disagree with gvac on that. I thought Edie Falco locked up an Emmy for herself with her performance. She went from hurt and bitter to vengeful and strong very convincingly. Every scene with Tony and Carm was interesting to watch: you wanted to see them finally get all their shit out in the open but at the same time you're kind of sad to see the family break up.
1) Baccala and Janice smooching and dancing like an old couple
Disturbing and disappointing.
5) What the fuck is Joey Sachs problem? How could Carmine miss how hot headed he was all these years? He really has it in for Carmine.
He has it in for Carmine and especially Carmine's son because both of them supported Tony not Johnny.
Interesting little details: Tony singing along to "Layla" (Eric Clapton's song of unrequited love) as he drives over his golf clubs. Tony watching TV and eating "Guiltless" salsa.

I thought it was an excellent episode. I try not to judge them individually, but as an ongoing thing. Just because it was the finale of the season I tried to go in not expecting anything. Somebody posted a while back that it's like one long film we get to see an hour at a time, and I always try and keep to that tack. As far as the episode goes I though both Tony and Carm were outstanding. Edie Falco really nailed the emotional roller coaster that Carm was on, and what can you say about Gandolfini? The intensity that they both brought was incredible. I liked the little flashback with Meadow, it was just a glimpse, David Chase is smart enough not to bog us down in a long winded regret and self-blame scene. As far as the future goes, who knows? I've given up trying to guess what's gonna happen. I will say this though, I would like to see Carmela leave Tony and the family behind and take up with Furio in a little olive grove on the side of a mountain somewhere in the Italian countryside, but I guess I'm just a hopeless romantic.

I thought it would have been a pretty good mid-season episode, but I was waiting for something a little better for the finale. When I saw the black screen with the credits, I was amazed that it was over.
I think the guy in the Daily News is overreacting a bit, though. He's convinced that Meadow shot herself as Tony left. I don't think that happened - they would have played a gunshot or something. They wouldn't just let Meadow disappear...

They left so many storylines open. The FBI investigation, and everyone just forgot that Ralph ever disapeared. Why the hell did they show those crackheads in that one episode? What was the point of introducing AJ's girlfriend? You would have thought that they'd make more of a deal about Junior being on trial for his life. Bobby B.'s wife dying was pretty pointless as well. They ignored that thing with Paully taking the picture, and you would have thought they'd do something with the tension building between Tony and Paully.
Oh well, I can always hope for Oz this season.

You could say everyone "forgot" that Pussy and Ritchie just "disapeared".
And I explained the FBI investigation. The feds have been stopped at every turn in trying to bust Tony. They need the goods. This is their only opening, and they're not gonna blow it. Go slow and gain her trust or wait for her to slip up. Less than a year passed over this season. If it was resolved already, it would be the most unrealistic thing ever portrayed on this show, and that's saying something.
They showed the crackheads because they were squatting on the land Ralphie and Tony were going to scam. They needed to be kicked out. They were. The land deal became something that pissed of Johnny Sac. Done and done.
AJ has a girlfriend. So what? We met Meadow's boyfriend this season. People date. Things happen. Not everything has to be huge and dramatic. You have a show set in a house with a high school kid who is dating, odds are you'll see the girlfriend. Why does it have to be a big deal?
They dealt with Junior's trial in practically every episode. Do you need people weeping or jurors getting capped for it to be "really" dramatic? It was a mistrial. Done and done.
Bobby's wife died because people died. Does it need to tie into something? This isn't a new Star Wars film, where EVERYTHING and EVERYONE needs to be tied to or related to something else. People just die. It's fucked up.
Paulie took the picture because he feels guilty about "betraying" Tony. The picture "staring" at him cleary represents this. What more do you need? So what if Tony said to get rid of it? Do you NEED to see him scream at Paulie over it, or kick his ass? Sometimes a picture is just a picture. It's not important. Stop trying to make it so.
Paulie and Tony's relationship has soured since the Russian in the woods. Tony and his crew basically assume that Paulie has been talking to Sac, so they've been keeping him at arm's length. He needs to work to gain their trust back.

I'm still waiting for the Russian interior decorator to show up again!

More overanalysis:
I remembered last season Melfi tellling Tony in one epsiode "You'll never leave Carmela: she'll leave YOU" (this was the epsiode where Tony dumped Gloria I think). Will Melfi's accurate "prediction" make it harder for him to return to therapy?
What was the deal with the FBI agent Adriana met with? When she asked Ade if the wedding was back on, Ade said she didn't know and that Christopher had concerns about being a father after sitting in the dog. Ade then asked the agent if she had any children and then she got this weird look on her face and quickly changed the subject. I wondered what that was about.

She wants to keep the relationship strictly business and let none of her personal life get into conversation. She may feel that if she does they may find out who she is and harm her family

Does anyone know if next season is the last season? I know Gandolfini said he didn't want to be on the show anymore and wanted to pursue other things **cough cough David Caruso cough cough**.

Almost every storyline I named was shown in a way that made it look like they were gonna make a huge deal out of it, but then they just failed to deliver. Every time they started to go in a direction with it, they just "let it go"

Listen to me NOW, dammit. Nothing has been dropped yet. You can't assume that until the show itself is dead and gone. Season finale's don't mean dick here. Be patient.

5th season will be the last. Chase and the cast have pretty much decided to keep it a finite thing.
