Definitely uncomfortable! In more ways than one. Maybe Ralphie resembles the nasty link that was posted a few days ago. I was just wondering what the hell is going on here!!! I noticed Michael Imperioli wrote this episode, maybe why it was called

At least it was better than Imperioli's last episode. But again, he writes in melfi where she's not needed. Last time he wrote in her whole throwaway drinking storyline, this time she showed up with her ex for absolutely no reason at all. But all in all, a nicely funny episode...I like the fact that they're setting it up that Ralphie is gonna get whacked because Tony thinks he's buddy-buddy with Johnnie Sac...
And poor Bobby B.. Ever episode I feel worse and worse for him...

I liked it. I thought it was funny, and clever although not in the storyline we've been dealing with. I would have preferred to see more of Adriana and the FBI bit. The whole racial/ethnic pride deal was hilarious, especially in the stable. When the Jewish guy got all upset about the Hitler/Columbus comment, I almost lost it.

Good episode with lots of undercurrents...like adiranna and the whole respect for friends thing. I think the Melfi scene was to show still how anti-italian her husband still is and the role he may play later on.
Why is it HBO needs to put homosexuality in every single show they do, i mean ralphie taking a v******r up the ass, unnecesary. And i dont think Ralphie is going to get whacked anytime soon, at least by nobody in Tony's crew.

If anyone's gonna do Ralphie, I think it's gonna be Johnny Sack, because he's so pissed off about the joke about his wife. I don't think Tony believes that they're buddy-buddy, I think he sees that there's some bad blood between them, and is afraid Ralphie is fucking things up with New York.

Good episode. It was nice to see them deal with the anti-Italian issue. Since the show has been getting so much flack.
Definitely a lot of undercurrents involved as mentioned above.
When is Tony going to find out that Paulie has been squealing to Johnny Sack?
Who is going to kill Ralphie, Janice, one of Tony's boys, or one of Johnny Sack's boys?
What is Adrianna going to do and who is going to find out that she was picked up by the feds?
Why is Johnny Sack pissed at Tony (land deal)?
Who is in the parking lot in the next episode?
We want Ron and Fez live in DC.

Yeah, but is Tony really worried about things being "fucked up" with New York? I'm assuming he's resentful for Johnny "sticking his beak" in to Jersey business when he said he wouldn't, so maybe he is seeing this as a way to whack Sac....

Geez no wonder he is chasing other broads. He gave her flowers, squezzed her into some lingerie like pork into some sausage casing and this putana is thinking of Furio. Does anyone else think that Ralph has a fiance in Niagra Falls? If you are in South Beach in a ball bag there is a good chance you are a mo. If you are Tony do you finish the hit on Johnny Sack? Less action means more gooder. If this show was all about the hits, it wouldn't have lasted past the first season. You want something packed with mob violence? Go see something like "Deuces Wild". And hell yeah, Carmella should be pissed at Tony. He doesn't even look her way for Lord knows how long, and she's just supposed to go nuts because he's glad she's not as fat as Ginny? Anyway.. I loved the show, but the two people I watched it with said it sucked... they think it's getting slower and slower... any ideas?

Yeah Tony and Carmela's sex was pretty bad. The fat F was very jerky. On a side note does anyone remember when the guy called in Ron and Fez and said somebody dies by decapatation. Well they were talking about that a lot last night and i wonder if it happens next week or something. Anyway that guy still had some good facts.

Amen. If it doesn't involve Tony, there's no reason to have her on the show. Her scenes stop everything dead and have nothing but the most tenuous links to what's going on.

The entire concept of the series derived from the fact that tony was torn between his mob family and Life family
as told to Dr. Melpi.
I was an extra on the last episode season 3 for a few seconds.

Yes, but now the focus can be directly on Tony and his two families. Her role is redundant. We don't need it talked about because we see everything happening now.

OK, Why is David Chase doing such horrible things to his characters? First, Ralphy is practicing for Oz with the Janice-monster, then he kills Baccala's wife and now (Oct. 20 episode) he lets Artie Bucco get bitch slapped by a FRENCHMAN? Sacre bleu! The ignominy! Is there a fate lower than this?!? Then Tony steps in and doesn't let Artie save a shred of dignity by doing the right thing? Merde.
Another uneven episode (highlight: Janice sucking the marrow out a bone) but still one of the few must-see TV shows.

Patsy was the one who scared her away. And I think Steve Buscemi should direct every episode from now on. Before this he did "Pine Barrens", and tonight's episode looked great. The dream sequence was a thing of beauty. And Imperoli's writing is really shaping up...though he still has that weakness for using Melfi the wrong way. The way Tony frightened her tonight was like a carbon copy of a similar scene a season or so back. Oh well...this a great season, still a great show. But where the fuck is the Russian?!?

And i think the main point with Tony is he needed to hear other people tell him he is good--like telling artie he is his friend and that he would help him or asking janice the same thing. The show is starting to pick up now and next week should be great. Plus give artie a break he's a cook not some thug, and he handled his own till the earring got ripped off. Or actually is more like an opera...we have the establishment of our characters (in this case a reintroduction), conflicts established, rising actions, climax, and finally descending action.
I put the current state of this season at the start of the rising action. And judging from all the conflicts that we are seeing, and combine with possibility that this might be last season, we are looking at your numero uno Greek tragedy conclusion to this series. I think has been very well done thus far and I know I am in the minority when I say I think the writers have done a good job with the season thus far...

From the article linked by AJinDC: The myriad unadvanced storylines included Adriana's snitch work, Uncle Junior's trial, and Ralphie's death threat against Janice. Ralphie's death threat against Janice! A line he blurts out in a fit of rage after she pushes him down the stairs is now an unresolved thread. Not every line in the show should be taken literally. Does anyone know what Tony and Janice were talking about in the preview for next week?
Pauly is whining to much. Of course Tony is not going to visit him he has to keep a low profile.
Does anyone else think that Furio is the missing Marx brother. He reminds me of a mix between Chico and Harpo with a ponytail.

i wonder if furio's seriously considering tony's demise. i cant see it happening. he's a made man from the old world, loyal to no end. he even agreed to be traded to another family like a piece of property. there's no way he'd kill the boss for his middle-aged wife.

What is his purpose on the show?
I'm thinking if Chase thinks like he did for season 1 and 2. Furio tries to seize power which either breaks the family in two or gets his ass royally killed. If Chase thinks like Days of Our Lives, Furio asks Tony if he can have Carmela. Tony is a little pissed at first then realizes they're in love, divorces Carmela and pays for their wedding/honeymoon. This is the part when Pussy's twin shows up for the cliffhanger. Da da dum!

Ralphies crying was much more realistic than Bobby's. So much so, they had me convinced theyd never wack him since they were making him so human (ala Johnny sac). WOW. Great fight scene!! And yes, I believe Ralph had the fire set. A) for the insurance and b) to get back at Tony for stealing his chick. Amazing episode, which means next weeks probably wont be as good..oh well. Now, for the Product placements:
Paulie's mom had the Clapper
Raplhie sprayed RAID in Tony's eyes.
and, the only audio one that i heard (and fezzie likes to use audio for the gameshow)..Tony asked Christopher if Ralphie had any VISENE.
Oh yeah..and the russians are back! just a tease, or a possibility of tying up that loose end?

It may have been the best episode of the season but why in the hell rush through all this crap with Ralphy. They could have dragged some of the shit out between Paulie and Ralphy that would have been more interesting and perhaps given Paulie a purpose this season.
Now, judging by the coming attractions, we have to put up with Furio/Carmella bore assing, and Adrianna getting upset whether or not she will have to testify or not.
They have been flirting with Paulie getting whacked for two seasons, now that we know that he is asking for more money as well as adrianna, we know they live through the season so I guess Ralphy had to go but at least wait a few more episodes. I mean who is left: Christopher is going to shoot up, paulie is going to piss and moan , Silvio is going to do nothing, and whose really left in the crew?
and ralphy pranking paulie's mom might have been the funniest thing that has ever been on the show.
That's why I love this show -- just when you think you can predict a plotline, they throw you for a loop: Gloria kills herself, Ralphie gets whacked.
And yes El Mudo, I caught Father Intantola quoting Sympathy for the Devil: "Were you there when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain?"

Best episode of the season!
Seconded. Killing off a major character is always fun and this one particularly.
Some of the minor key highlights: Uncle Junior back strong with a Vinny the Chin turn.
Everybody repeating the mantra This is a business when the motivations are nothing but personal.
What I'm assuming to be a visual in-joke - Tony getting half-nekkid in every episode with what could charitably be called an untoned middle-aged body & remaining a sex god and being physically able to kill someone with his bare hands. (His limping around after killing Ralphie becomes the delayed punch line.)
For me, what remains the best part of this show is the way the producers play with our expections and subvert them. We're trained from watching X years of TV to expect the same narrative arc - these guys know that and delight in not giving it to us, at least not in the way we expect it. You never know what is foreshadowing and what is a red herring. (As Mojo put it - Where is that damn Russian?)
2 final thoughts- What really was Ralphie's last Straw? Killing the horsie or offhandedly coveting Carm? & How great was the last scene - Tony stumbling around in the dark calling Christopher before being blinded by the daylight. Anybody else flash back to Philosophy 101 - Plato's cave?

Ok this is a quote from myself from last week describing how literature and even TV/Movies work. We are soooo into the rising action that the season will end before anyone has a chane to blink eye...I will admit the intro of characters was a little long winded, YET necessary. We now have all of our conflicts and potential climaxes (Tony getting whacked by Ralph's people, Tony getting arrested by feds, etc...). Just know this, when the climax hits the falling action will come just as fast...that is how literature/movies work. Climax acheieved end of novel/mvie...

NICE. Foreshadowing just a bit of the rage Tony will feel if Furio and Carmella actually happen.
Here's my prediction. Based on the (usually misleading) trailer, it looks like the Jersey crew start thinking Sac had Ralphie whacked, and they start feeling threatened. Tony doesn't reveal he actually killed Ralphie, and things start spiraling out of control, as in a war between NJ and NYC.

I gotta say I was just starting to like Ralphie, then they drop him. They set it up so you couldn't see it coming. We know Ralphie set the fire, just by him saying how much he would get in insurance and the colic bills were getting to high. Tony had to kill him as soon as the knife came out. I usually don't like Christopher, but I always admire the way he hacks people up. I know that sounds sick, but he does his job like a man and you have to respect that. Great scene was when Tony told Paulie to stop starin. That was a big thing towards getting him back in line. I lost it when that wig came off. First episode to live up to the hype and an all time top 5 episode in my book.

I just think that it was dumb to portray Ralphie semi-sympathetically (with the kid and apologizing to Roe and going to the priest) and then kill him. Besides Tony he was the most entertaining character on the show now we have to listen to Pauly complain for five more weeks that he gets no respect.

Now that Tony knows the kid is back on da shit what does that do to his master plan?? They're going to the mats folks and who'll be left standing after the metal hits the meat???
offhandedly coveting Carm?
That reminded me of the scene in Godfather 2 when Fredo told Michael "I wish I married a woman like Kay and had a family."

Talking about this at work today....How come Tony bitched out Paulie when he got mad at him for talking about wacking Ralphie for personal reasons, but Tony kills him cause he killed a fucking horse??? Not for nothing but Tony said it himself "this is business". Ralphie did exactly what he was supposed to do....he saw the horse was losing money, never gonna be a real winner, took out some insurance on it, then set up the perfect accident .....BAM....insurance check is in the mail. He was a good earner despite all the personal shit that was going on in his life. This is totally gonna have the rest of the crew in an uproar because all of a sudden a captain is gone....without a trace.

Excellent episode! The best scene was the wig coming off Ralphie's head. What the hell does Janice do on this show? The only worthwhile thing she ever did was kill Richie. But I miss Richie and now I'll miss Ralpie. The Sopranos underground says the Russians are coming back so we'll see how that pans out. Also I remember Meadow saying the 11th show is the best one...we'll see. I have to put this weeks show in the top 5 Sopranos.

tony's been really irrational these last few episodes. whipping the assemblyman and killing his best earner are 2 decisions that could come back to hurt him. he's the boss, for chrissakes. you dont reach that level by letting your anger overcome your reasoning. up until this point, everything tony's done has made sense, and anything he did out of anger was justified. yes, ralphie had it coming, but mostly for stuff he did last season. this year he's been a riot, and joey pants put in such a great performance in what was his swan song. he was a huge part of the show this year, and i'll miss watching him. dammit, nothing against tony sirico, but it shoulda been him.

The painting is going to be a big thing. Putting tony in a generals uniform is definetly foreshadowing for things to come as tony leads his "family" into war against N.Y. (like i predicted). And Paulie definetly feels guilty about ralphie, because tonys story basically put the blame on Johnny Sac and since he was the one who ratted out Ralphie to johnny sac in the first place. The stuff with furio and carmella was way to long in the middle of the episode.

I think the painting didn't just symbolize the impending war between families, but also sets Paulie up for quite a beating. Not only did he have the balls to keep/steal something that Tony had real deep feelings about, but you know that Tony will take serious offense to being painted in the image of Napolean...a diminutive, insane, frog eatin' French faggot. According to some beliefs/mythologies, before the actual Antichrist shows up, three figures will appear who could or would be mistaken for the actual Antichrist, but really aren't. Napolean is said to be one, and so is Hitler. Supposedly immediately after the third one appears on the scene, the TRUE Antichrist will be revealed almost right away. Personally, I think it's a stretch to throw Napolean in there. Sure, he waged a lot of war, but that was par for the course for all the half-nuts, inbred European rulers at the time. I'd say Stalin, Pol Pot, bin Laden and Hussein are worse than him, and that's just off the top of my head.

You got that right about him not being your typical Frenchman. Napoleon was actually Corsican; a small island nation just south of France. Ironic connection between Napoleon and Hitler is that they were both rulers of countries they were not born in (Napoleon-Corsica, Hitler-Austria)...
As for what someone said earlier about the ending of Sopranos meaning that Tony will lead his 'troops' into battle. I very much have to agree with that assessment. Although I am not so sure that Tony will be the George Washington, but rather the Horatio Gates...quick rise, then an equally quick fall

Russian Nurse: "I'm a nurse not a maid."
Uncle Junior: "Well get him an aspirin then."

Last night's was beautiful to look at. I still don't get the butterfly on the back of that guy's head though.
Last night's episode was indeed gorgeously shot.
However, it was not a butterfly, it was a moth. Butterflies rest with their wings closed, while moths rest with their wings open and butterflies have long, thin antenna, while moths have shorter feathery antennas.
The butterfly dream theme is common, and at its most basic, represents transformation.
However, in Tony's dream, it's clear it represents the classic dream theme:The butterfly appears in a dream as a symbol for a mind which is going astray. The modern analogy of a woman's butterfly mind, her flightiness and inconstancy, is very pertinent here. Woman cannot find peace of mind unless she has experienced sexuality's spiritual significance in the union of man and woman.
This is a harbinger of Carmella's being on the verge of taking a deep dicking from Furio and Tony's continued thoughts and fears of being out of control.

And for more on Tony's "Sad Clown" theme, I encourage everyone to buy or see Leoncavallo's Opera Pagliacci.
Interesting that the tenor part, the "sad clown", is named Tonio. And the baritone's name is Silvio and he gets stabbed at the end...And, of course, the theme is filled with cheating, betrayal and revenge...
Pagliacci's "Vesti la giubba" is perhaps the most famous aria and one of the most recognizable tunes in the world.
Recitar!
ridi, Pagliaccio... e ognun applaudir…!
Tramuta in lazzi lo spasmo ed il pianto;
in una smorfia il singhiozzo e'l dolor...
Ridi, Pagliaccio, sul tuo amore in franto!
Ridi del duol t'avvelena il cor!

So was that Death at the end? Either Tony or someone close to Tony will die.

That last dream freaked me out. I dug last nights episode. Sure there were no huge revelations, but it was definately a set-up for many big things to come. And thank God they didnt dwell on the telemundo soap opera that is furio-carmella. blech. As for the moth, Melfi kind of explained it didnt she? "Did your associate recently go thru any changes?" HA! Oh, and dont think we've seen the last of Melfi, she was in the coming attractions. Ok now for this weeks Product placements:
Janice bought Bobby and the kids steaks from Outback Steakhouse and did a little Truman Show-esque deal about how its good food "oh! a bloomin onion!" (but then commented on how expensive it was...odd.)
Janice and Bobby later ate at Nathan's (altho this was a non-audio)
Carm's parents saw Connie Francis in Champs hardware.
