This, unfortunately, is a VERY sad lot of women who either didn't get love from their dads when they were young or have other emotional issues they are dealing with.

A friend of mine was telling me a story of a woman she was friends with, that she went on a "bus trip" with. Her friend felt the need to go up to all the other participants on the bus to talk to them and find out all about them (whether they liked it or not). She absolutely had to be the center of attention at all times. It got to the point that when everyone was told to sit on the bus in their seats, this GROWN woman GOT UP on top of her seat to talk to the people in front of her (who she didn't even know).

I have seen women pretend to be lesbians (because they know men will pay attention to this), wear clothing that is uncomfortable (thongs, uncomfortable high heels, etc.), have their bodies sliced open in surgery, etc. just for attention.

It is very sad in my opinion.

I couldn't agree with you more! My former best friend was a girl who would get in fights with her boyfriend in public (she started them all)and she ate up the attention when people said "oh hes such a jerk, etc, etc". I took it upon myself to set her up with a nice guy and she dumped him cause he wouldn't fight with her.

She would go around telling people that she'd had an abortion, which is not something in my opinon, you'd want to voice to strangers.

Finally she'd in one breath tell us she was a diabetic and as us for a choclate bar or a piece of our cookie the next. W T F ?!?

Made me nuts.

i HATE HATE HATE...YES HATE! when people have to be the center of attention ALL THE TIME...ugh! i know MANY people who are like that ..its always ME ME ME ME...my cousin gina is EXACTLY like that....her entire senior yr of HS she was a coke head- so we got her help and what not and you know really gave her as much 'ATTENTION' as she needed cuz this was very difficult for herBUT the following yr when she was all sober HER OLDER SISTER maria got engaged youd think gina would be all happy...NOOO..cuz now people were make a hoopdy doo about maria's wedding...not only was gina VERY VERY jealous that now there was more attention on her sister BUT several times she told her sister THAT SHE DIDNT WANNA BE HER maid of honor- by the way is an entirely other story- and of course the day of the wedding gina was all upset that no one was paying any attention to her as being the maid of honor....

Don't expect the relationship to be an easy one. From what I have read and experienced with these type of people, they are sooooo emotionally needy that they are usually ABSOLUTELY draining to everyone around them, and, usually are not faithful to the one person they go out with as they constantly need attention by many people in their lives.

Really pathetic and sad for all involved!

Have discussed topic many times with many people and the concensus is that attention whores are doodieheads.

I wear high heels all the time though, and its because looking taller = looking thinner.

I worked with a woman who always had to be the center of attention. I guess when she was younger and better looking people indulged her. Once her looks were gone nobody paid her any mind and she just came across as desperate. It was pretty sad to witness.

I do not put a psychiatric clincal label on anyone who I don't know. To do so is dangerous. I know many of these women in my own life who have never been diagnosed as bipolar. I do think, though, that something seriously was missing in their childhood - more probably, the love of a father.

I think that when a woman puts herself in PAIN (as in the case of getting plastic surgery, wearing high heels that are painful, and in some cases damaging to their bodies, thongs that are uncomfortable, etc.), engaging in unsafe sex, just for attention, there is a problem that probably should be looked at.

Also, when others around you find that your "emotional neediness" is exhausting and unmanageable, there is probably a problem that should be looked at.

1. So now only women are having plastic surgery? Men have apparantly tired of liposucition, nose jobs, scrotal tightenings (no kidding) and pectoral implants. Before you go about condemning a woman (or a man) for undergoing a painful procedure to look good, recall that it is their decision and that the benefits in their opinion outweigh the risks.

This reminds me of people who object to pornography saying something along the lines of "it's demeaning to women" or "these poor misguided 'souls' don't know what they're doing." What's demeaning to women is feeling the need to infantalize those in the porno industry and place moral judgments upon them, and believe you konw what is better for them than they do.

The anti-pornographers, like those who oppose plastic surgery, opperate under the very misguided notion that women especially do not and cannot know what's good for them and must be protected from themselves.

2. You mention undomfortable clothing. You may not like a thong, but other women do. Calling them "attention whores" because you find an undergarment that no one really cares about not to your tastes, is again infantalizing those who like that underwear.

Even worse than infantalization, is the overeaching aura of paternalism inherent in these attitudes. That's not a surpirse though. Most religions are virulently anti women.

Interesting that consider a non clinical psychological diagnosis dangerous. You have no difficulty making a very subjective determination that the women whom you don't approve of are attention whores - Even if their behavior is recounted to you by a second party! You also have no problem attributing their problems to lack of parental love.

Looks like we might be facing a bit of projection here.

To make it perfectly clear, go read my post. You quoted from it. I did not make any diagnosis. I said she had symptoms that sounded Bipolar (which involves mania but not necessarily depression) and that she sould be EVALUATED. Your further comment that people find their behavior exhausting and unmanagable is also typical of bipolar.

You labeled as attention whores and condemed them. I presented an alternative viewpoint and referred for evaluation. Do you see the difference?

Finally, I'm glad that you're such an expert on lesbianism that you can separate at a glance the legetimate lesbians from the "attention whore" lesbians. Give Rory a call. I'm sure this would be a great bit in the studio.

I know attention whores...but I think the people who give them the attention are just as worse. The more these whores kick and shout...the more attention they get...making the other person feel like they are needed.

They compliment each other.

If you just ignored the whores then they will realize that their little stunt isn't working. It's kind of like a crying baby who is always used to their parent picking them up...let them cry and they will eventually sleep.

I really really really HATE attention whores...they need to get a life.

Horde King: Why is it that when a subject comes up pertaining to sex, you seem to just jump on the issue, not so much on others, I notice (excepting those directed directly to you in your forum). (A little creepy in my opinion.)

Sort of reminds me of a friend of mine who no longer sees her male psychologist because all he seemed to ask her was about her sex life. As she was telling me about this she then imitated someone with his tongue hanging out and who probably masterbated later over what his patients told him. I am not saying you do this, but the story just came to my mind.

The only sex I can't conceive of is men of your gods raping little boys. Oh yes, and then the vatican rejecting a one strike and you're out policy. If priests can't rape young boys who will be a priest.

Your secondhand account (again secondhand) regarding your friend and her shrink points to two things. Either your friend had a lousy shrink, or, she had issues that she was not able to discuss (a religious woman no doubt) so ridiculed the process instead.

Maybe after you spend some time on the board, and break the 500 post mark you'll get a clearer sense of what I post and what I respond to and what I moderate.

In fact just the opposite - I thought it wrong for a woman to put herself in PAIN or CONTORT herself to do things she wouldn't normally be doing for sexual attention. I admit, the underwear part was a little far fetched, but I still can't really see anyone putting themselves into a physically uncomfortable situation just for attention. I think, as a future psychologist, if you don't recognize that putting yourself in pain or contorting yourself for attention/sex is a problem, than you may want to look at this deeper.

The only sex I can't conceive of is men of your gods raping little boys. Oh yes, and then the vatican rejecting a one strike and you're out policy. If priests can't rape young boys who will be a priest.

Your secondhand account (again secondhand) regarding your friend and her shrink points to two things. Either your friend had a lousy shrink, or, she had issues that she was not able to discuss (a religious woman no doubt) so ridiculed the process instead.

That's good, put the woman seeking for help down! Again, she didn't seek his help in reference for any sexual matter, this is why she thought it bizarre, and rightfully, never saw him again.

Maybe after you spend some time on the board, and break the 500 post mark you'll get a clearer sense of what I post and what I respond to and what I moderate.

I read the board even before I became a member. I am very aware of what has been posted.

There were over 300 cases of priests molesting or acting inappropriately towards children reported in this year alone. And that's just what's been made public. Go back a few centuries and I'm sure it was going on even more then. Tolerated, but not talked about. I happen to know personally, a friend of mine who was molested by a priest as a child.

I myself am a recovering Catholic. For me personally, my decision to not follow organized religion anymore was based on multiple factors, not just the kid touching bit.

The Catholic church's consideration of divorce as being unforgivable was the first one that got under my skin. After that, pile on their position on homosexuality (especially interesting in light of recent discoveries). The fact that they feel abortion of an unwanted pregnancy, conceived by a rapist, is a worse sin than the rape itself. The idea that ANYBODY could say thay they are a "holier" person than anyone else is just ridiculous. The idea that the lambs, uhh... I mean, the congregation, can and will, remove themselves from responsibility for their own actions, because it's "God's" will. It is a sin to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, yet it was ok for armies to murder hundreds in the Church's name centuries ago. The idea that even if there were a God, that ANY human felt they had the right to speak on His behalf, is so arrogant and self-righteous that it repulses me.

It always amazed me how in church, I would hear how God was a loving and forgiving being, yet, by the end of mass, I felt judged and accused of sin so bad, that I had to tell the man who refused to reveal his identity or allow himself to be seen, hear all my dirty little secrets, and later have to say little chants repeatedly to thin air in order to "atone for my sins".

But hey, if all that stuff works for you in order for you to sleep at night thinking that there'll be a place called Heaven where you can meet up with dear ol' granny and gramps, don't let me stand in your way.

Oh, and to bring this all back around to "attention whores". There sure seems to have been alot of posting in this thread, you're definitely making yourself well known.

Now before I get lynched let me say that the guy is an f'in hero, not only for surviving the Hanoi Hilton but, like Mandela, transcending it and supporting normalization of relations with Vietnam. His work on campaign reform is underappreciated but probably the most valuable thing to come out of Congress in the last decade. He was the only one running in 2000 that deserved to be President. But, damn, is there any media forum that he isn't on constantly? Imus every other week. Larry King? Every single network/cable (supposedly) political talk with the gas bag hosts methanating the atmosphere with their constant rehashing of the obvious. And now the lame as Leykis SNL? The man is better than that. Will one of his people please slap some sense into him?

I think I came along too late into this thread to really watch two titans battle it out, but I have one question:

My dear man, sex in the wrong context (usually outside of marriage) has caused more problems AND DEATH in this world than anything I can think of:

AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, unfaithful marriages that break up families and cause sadness to children, and those same unfaithful marriages causing unbelievable pyschological torture to the spouses involved, abortions, and deaths from attempted abortions to young girls who do not want these children, women who are demeaned as just mere objects (with no soul or personality) in prostitution, and I can go on and on.

Are you saying that sex caused all those things? Sex causes bad marriages, disease, objectification of women and whatever else you were going to list but didn't?

Odd, but I thought sex was an act. Animals do it. They don't objectify their mates, they don't have half the problems you describe.

Don't you think a lot of Catholics were outraged by this as well? There are a lot of things I disagree with, with the Church, but there are alot of things I love about it as well. There are alot of things I approve of. I guess the reason why I have "vented" alot on the board is because I do just that, I "vent" about things bothering me. There have been positive things I have written about as well. Sorry, I don't live in a magical world where I don't see and experience problems around me. I guess I could plaster on a fake smile and do a dance if I could.

How is it that one being married makes it any less problematic? Do you not even realize that there are countless violent sex crimes commited by husbands to their own wives? Are you basing this on STD's? So you're saying that a non-married, monogamous couple, of any sexual preference, is still going to transmit a disease, or do some "tremendous harm" to themselves or others because they didn't wed? There are millions of non-married, monogamous couples that aren't hurting anybody. If you think that we should live in a world where everyone is a virgin until after they are married, or that if they choose not to wed, they must abstain from sexual activity, you're extremely seperated from reality. I won't ask if you waited until after marriage to have sex, or if your husband did, because it's none of my business. If that's your choice, great, I'm happy that worked out for you, however passing judgement on people who make a different choice is nobody's right to do.

The situations you seem to be referring to are not the majority.

You can't catch a disease without having sex.

First off, in most cases there is a general love and caring for one another to begin with. That is why most people get married. Secondly, being in a faithfully committed marriage, logically cuts one's chances of getting an STD tremendously. It's about #'s - for every person you sleep around with, the chances are greater of getting a disease. If you have slept with a person who has slept with 100 people, you have also slept with the other 100 people's diseases, and if the person continues in this pattern, there is a greater chance of getting a disease.

I am not really judging at all. As a matter of fact, I have a great deal of sympathy for people who have suffered from AIDS, prostitution, harm from abortions, std diseases, etc.

I have contributed to AIDS organizations, and have helped my sister try to adopt a baby from a foundation dealing with unwed teen mothers. I have had friends of mine die from AIDs, and have friends who have suffered with various STDs and my heart went out to them.

Your entire basis for this thread was to pass judgement.

In the very first sentence alone, you made assumptions about the history of people you do not even know. Saying they "didn't get love from their dads when they were young or have other emotional issues", is a knee-jerk analysis and judgement based on what YOUR assumptions are and no facts to support it.
After that, you say "A friend of mine was telling me a story of a woman she was friends with". You weren't even there! Yet you still feel you are knowleged enough to speak so definitively about it. And while we're examining this trip, I still don't understand how you explained away how a woman going up to talk to people on a bus, trying to be friendly, turned into a rant about women faking lesbianism, uncomfortable underwear and cosmetic surgery.

There is nothing wrong with voicing an opinion but you do not do this. You condemn those who don't match your particular religous morals. Think how much happier you'd be if you just read Tolkien. It's much more believable and internally consistent. And you'd learn to love the different ways of the hobbits, elves, dwarves and humans.

Once again I'm late to the conversation. But I wanted to add a few small things (trying to not make them sound like sarcastic jabs)

You can't catch a disease without having sex

So I guess the bloodborne diseases don't exist? And that whole concern over blood exchange is overrated hype?

I am not really judging at all. As a matter of fact, I have a great deal of sympathy for people who have suffered from AIDS, prostitution, harm from abortions, std diseases, etc.

How long has prostitution been a disease? I thought it was "the world's oldest profession", not the world's oldest ailment.

I am just amazed as to how someone can be so moralistic (as in sticking to their moral code unerringly, even in the face of judgemental decision-making) and be so ill-advised about the world.

Finally (I realize this adds nothing to the topic):

I don't think the hobbits had all the issues with infidelity or disease.
