View Full Version : X-Mas vs. Christmas

I don't know why, but it bothers me when I see X-mas as an abbreviation for Christmas. Maybe it's because my family is religious and my mom always told me that I shouldn't use x-mas.

I don't know if it bothers anyone else, just thought about it when I saw a thread title.

~Thanks to PanterA for this kick ass sig!~

I shuddered when i saw jon's post too. My father, the most unreligious man i ever knew, always yelled at me when i wrote xmas. So, I always use Christmas..what bothers me more is when people actually SAY "X-Mas"...wow.

I HATE HATE HATE X-mas, it's awful. The holiday is called Christmas, I don't see why there is a need to give it another name.

Wolverien would so kick baby Jesus' ass. Much like Clark Kent, Jesus' powers didn't start showing themselves until he was a teen.

Plus Wolverine's claws would make the stigmata look like a couple of paper cuts.

Really....if you say X-Mas because you just don't acknowledging the Christian element of the holiday.....

Well, you're just waaaay too fucking sensitive.

I like Christmas because it looks nicer. And it wouldn't be fair having Wolverine fight baby Jesus. Jesus could kick anyone's ass. He has the power of flight and mind bullets.

Well, I say "christmas", but I type "xmas." Mainly, I do it to jerk the proverbial chains of uptight religious wackos. Also, I never capitalize "god" (unless writing a serious paper) for the same reason.

YEah, I never really liked to see X-Mas either. It is Christs birth day and should be referred to as such. I am sure glad our society has not gotten lazy re-naming other holidays. Actually T-giving might be kind of cool. I wouldn't mind getting T's given to me every day.

Never ask the Jew to spell the Christian holiday, I'll just spell it the shortest way possible. Then again, we can't even pick a way to spell Hanukah.

On X-mas, you can X-sit on Professor Xavier's X-lap and X-tell him what want for an X-present.

Too bad his withered, dead legs feel all creepy and squishy under your buttocks, and it just ruins the whole X-ambience.

I shuddered when i saw jon's post too.

I get mad whenever Jon posts, and X-mas sucks but here's where it comes from...

from Random House online:

Usage. The abbreviation XMAS for Christmas dates from the mid-16th cent. The X is the Greek letter chi, the initial in the word Xpi s t ¢s (Christos) "Christ." In spite of a long and respectable history, today XMAS is objectionable to many, perhaps because of its associations with advertising. It is not used in formal writing.

This makes me think of the Saturday Night live skit with Eddie Murphy as Mr. Robinson. He has X-Mas on a card. He then says, "Can you think of any other words that begin with X? How about X-con? Or X-Cape?. Classic.

Professor X cheats though, he only knows if you've been bad or good by mind melding with you and then he just makes you think you see the gift you want.
