Go with what ANts said about using the nutual friends name. ANd if you really have no clue what to say and you know you're going to get nervous...write down a list of topics to refer to. That way you're not stuck with that awkward silence. Oh, and if she gives you 1 word answers, hang up and beat your friend.

make sure you don't talk about yourself at all, girls hate that. just try to talk about her as much as possible, where she grew up, where she went to school, what she plans to do, what's her job, does she like it, what music she's into, what shows she likes, etc.

as long as you keep the conversation about her she will be happy and you'll be fine. and whatever she says remain positive the entire conversation. i know this is hard for sarcastic f's like ourselves but if she brings up a show or music you don't like don't say, "oh i hate that, or that sucks", even if you think it's the worst thing on earth. girls react bad to any kind of negativity, even something on this small a level. you don't have to agree with what she says, just stay positive.
