View Full Version : A thought about letters

Hey guys! So I've written
letters to John Sykes. So
has my boyfriend. So have
our dogs.... but... here's my
thought.

In the end, John Sykes
really doesn't have much
say in the matter. If R&F
don't have the arbitron
ratings (which they
undortunately don't - the
ratings have plummeted
since O&A went off the air,
and whether we think it is
because they have been
moved all over the station or
not, that fact is unfotunately
undisputable), they aren't
going to stay, without some
sort of divine intervention.

Keeping them in the city
makes sense to US, but to
the guys who 'run the show'
, no ratings = no show.

So our options are to
increase their ratings as
much as possible in a
couple of weeks (the
banner plane was a good
start; a flyer campaign
maybe?) OR to try to get
some divine intervention.

The way I see it, nobody at
Infinity OR Viacom
particularly CARES about
the show. They have no
ratings, they go. John Sykes
can't do anythng about it.
Really, nobody can do
anything about it. However,
if any one person WERE to
be in a position to do more
than anyone else about it, it
would probably be Sumner
Redstone, the chairman
and CEO of Viacom.

Does that make sense?
Maybe an analogy (this may
fail horribly): Due to budget
cuts, your local school has
decided to sweep the floors
every otehr day rather than
every day. Clearly the guy
who sweeps the floors and
decides how to do it is the
janitor. But do you tell the
janitor you want tthe floors
swept every day? No, you
talk to the principal.

I agree that the ratings play a big part in the decision whether to cut R&F or not. And, I think that we should try to boost listenership as much as possible.

The thing that galls me, though, is that it seems that we're doing the things that Infinity should do! Maybe if they did some promotion for the show, instead of just shuffling it around on an otherwise empty station, there would be higher ratings.

Too cute please give the numbers since you have the scoop on the massive ratings drop that happened in the last 3 months. and.....

Sumner M. Redstone

I agree with Too Cute's assesment entirely; however, writing letters can't hurt. My letter specifically deals with the fact that we know the ratings are low, but I also point out the reasons. This is a portion of my letter (which I have sent to all the Viacom and Infinity bigwigs):

The fans of the program also realize that this is a business; however, there must be room on one of your stations in the area for Ron and Fez. They have managed to gather quite a large following, which is made more amazing by the fact that they've never been given any promotion, their time slot has changed several times, and that they haven't had decent lead-in support in many months. This just proves just how talented these two men are.

Obviously in the end ratings decide the fate of programs. Without the ratings advertisers won't come a-knocking. The big chiefs in the corporation have to realize that high ratings are very hard to come by when the show is always being switched around, and the station is in a constant state of flux. Listen, we may be chasing windmills here, but we can't just give up.

i agree with toocute..partially..

but if you all think that ratings is the only reason RF would be taken off the station, you've got another thing coming to you. anyone that's spent some quality time at wnew...i'm talking about offair..you'd find out quickly that place is filled with too many fucking politics....from promotions all the way up to the top.

i mean of course it's ratings, but OA had the ratings and they were taken off the air..not because of ratings obviously, because of politics

i have nothing witty to add.

O AN A were taken off the air, not because of politics, but because they went a little too far. They were fired by WNEW, along with other people, because of pressure from Infinity and Viacom brass.

I just went to the abritron ratings site. The Fall 2002 ratings will be available on or about: January 6, 2003.

I wasn't suggesting that
writing to John Sykes is
useless, that we should
give up, or anything like that.

Simply suggesting another
option, which you may or
may not support.

At this point, ratings mean nothing. After the O&A "shafting", the station was determined to make a change and they also anticipated losing revenue.
They have already moved sales staff to K-Rock. When they finally "flip" into their new format they will reinvent the station and target new demos.
The WNEW you hear now is just in a "holding pattern". They will have the new format in place soon. Infinity management could care less about ratings now. We are writing to tell them we want the show on the NYC airwaves,
whether it be on another Infinity station or on a new WNEW format. We are consumers, letter writing is the way to go here. That's just the best way to deal with corporate America.
Ron and Fez are scheduled to become a WJFK show..that's a fact. We have to tell the suits, as consumers, that we object.

i will be sending out copies of my letter on monday to sykes(again), redstone, karmazin, fullam, and schuon...

and just fyi, OA weren't fired, as far as i know they were suspended, i believe they're still held in contract..i may be wrong but that's what i believe is accurate

i have nothing witty to add.

Toocute I didn't meant that writing letter to sykes is not working but we should also look up the managment line and start wrting more letters to Redstone at the same time keeping the pressure on Sykes

Theoretically, ratings DO
make a difference: Ron and
Fez are going off the air
when WNEW flips. With
poor ratings, they will not go
elsewhere. With good
ratings there is a better
chance that we will get
them back on the air in the
city sooner.

Theoretically, if the ratings
came out in time (which
they won't), WNEW might
delay a flip if R&F's ratings
were high enough. This is a
moot point, however.

In reality it is too late to try to
increase their listenership.

Letter writing in general is important in that it attracts the attention of the people to whom the letters are going. When these bigshots at Viacom understand that there is a demand for a certain thing, it would make smart business sense to meet the demand. KEEP WRITING YOUR LETTERS!!!SOMEONE WILL GET THE MESSAGE!!!

What determines the ratings of a show?

Wow, this is making me all teary-eyed.
Just reading this thread, and for the past few weeks, months... It's absolutely touching.
And I'm just a listener.
Can you imagine how much more touched and flattered are RON and FEZ to see such a great group of people come together and keep coming up with several creative ways to keep the show alive?
Just like the scene out of 'THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS', the way this board and listeners and fans of the show are working UNITEDLY to help keep our guys in NEW YORK is the exact same way The Who's in Whoville made that giant green monster's tiny heart, grow 3 sizes too large (or however it goes).

I personally appreciate you all for the efforts and positive pushing you've all been sharing. Thank you and Keep up the good work!
