View Full Version : A Former FBI Agent Used the Word "Negro" on Fox Tonight

Is that word now considered inappropriate?
If so, I do have an honest question. How does a person refer to the black race? Is "African American" and "black" the only accepted terms? This is an honest question.
When I heard the woman say that the killer was most likely a "negro male" I cringed in a reflexive manner then questioned why.

The problem is that ever since we gave the blacks rights, they started making laws against those words.

As far as I know, although the word Negro is little used (probably because of it's similarity to that other N word), it's still a technical, scientific, and legal word. It's in the dictionary. My mom uses it, and yes it makes me cringe, but that was an okay word when she stopped changing her vocabulary every year to satisfy others. And not every black person is from Africa, so that term has never made sense to me. I say black, and even if that becomes verboten, I'm at the age where I'm not gonna change just to satisfy others.

Main Entry: Neúgro
Pronunciation: 'nE-(")grO
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural Negroes
Etymology: Spanish or Portuguese, from negro black, from Latin nigr-, niger
Date: 1555
1 sometimes offensive : a member of the black race distinguished from members of other races by usually inherited physical and physiological characteristics without regard to language or culture; especially : a member of a people belonging to the African branch of the black race
2 sometimes offensive : a person of Negro descent
"Negro" essentially means "from Africa", as in "right off the boat." Look at Africans and black Americans and you'll usually see HUGE differences, so it's just flat out inaccurate to call a black American a "negro".
Main Entry: Cauúcaúsian
Pronunciation: ko-'kA-zh&n, k„- also -'ka-zh&n
Function: adjective
Date: 1807
1 : of or relating to the Caucasus or its inhabitants
2 a : of or relating to the white race of humankind as classified according to physical features b : of or relating to the white race as defined by law specifically as composed of persons of European, No. African, or southwest Asian ancestry
- Caucasian noun
"Caucasian" is clearly based almost solely on the fact that someone's skin is "white", and not really on assumed physical or body traits, as "negro" is.
There's a difference, and it took me two seconds to learn. Is it really that unbearable, Heckler?

Well, my Merriam-Webster does. That, and I'm basing it on the fact most black people just don't like being called a "negro". Cut 'em some slack. If people (Namely the ones that the word is aimed at) largely take a word as an insult or slur, why bother using it? Just say "black". Ooooooh, scary-hard.

National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). United Negro College Fund (UNCF). These 2 pop into my head. If the word's so offensive, especially to "most" people they serve, why dont they change it? Again, I dont use it because of its resemblance to the other word, which we've been told is a "bad" one. But the original question was "is the word inappropriate?" I say no.

Well, those are both obviously products of their time, as that the former was founded in 1935 and the latter in 1944. I'm assuming the titles are simply kept that way out of tradition and formality.
Again, it's "somewhat" offensive. It's not like the "n" is standing for "nigger". "Negro" is just a wholly outdated term that serves no purpose and never has to be used.
Let me put it this way: do you feel you NEED to use the word "negro"? If not, then don't. You said you don't, and for the reason why most don't and shouldn't, so it seems like we're in the same boat. It's simple.
Again, I dont use it because of its resemblance to the other word, which we've been told is a "bad" one.
Don't worry about the quotes there. "Nigger" is obviously a bad word, and is in fact an awful, horrendous word. Nobody should have to be "told" that?
I'm not condeming the FBI agent for using the word. I don't think he should be punished or anything. Maybe he should just take the minimal effort next time to use a word that lost most of it's meaning a good 50 years ago...

When I was in Elementary School we were taught that the 3 different races of human beings were Caucasian, Negro, and Mongoloid.
Dr. Martin Luther King preferred the term "Negro" to "colored" and wished to be referred to that way.
Then "Negro" became unacceptable and "black" was preferred.
Now, "African-American" is the term of choice.
I find it hard to believe that simply because someone isn't up on the latest lingo they're racist in any way.
But what do I know? I'm a cracker.

This is the definition I found in Webster's:
melanin
Mel"a*nin, n. [Gr. me`las, -anos, black.] (Physiol.) A black pigment found in the pigment-bearing cells of the skin
(particularly in the skin of the negro)
So what have we learned?
#1 - Webster's Dictionary is a bigoted publication and should be shut down immediately.
#2 - Don't EVER refer to me as "white" again. I want to be called "melanin-challenged."

Leave it to a goddamn
cop(oink, oink pig) to a
honest opinion about this
topic. This simple fact that
you have this lame brained argument about how to label someone is just ignorant. "
You make no sense.
We all fall into some type of category. In police work specifically, there is a definate need to have labels. The most memorable aspects of people's appearance would be skin color. The rest of the common characteristics used to describe people such as height, weight, eye color, hair color, and build are subjective.
It is not offensive to describe a white person as caucasian. In turn, describing a black person as a negro shouldn't be offensive either.
Language is constantly evolving. The term is a technical one, and its negative connotation has only developed recently.
If you have so many problems with labels, why so quick to call Chris the Cop a pig? I find your ignorant statement to be, by far, more offensive than the word negro.

Then there is this militant secreary at my work who balled out my secretary for calling the blackboard in our inservice room a "blackboard", saying it was a "chalkboard." She also took offense when a doctor referred to the "Black Plague."

It gets even more annoying confusing when you consider that even a sloppy bitch like Dave Matthews is technically "African-American", since he falls into that white South African category.

1 sometimes offensive : a member of the black race distinguished from members of other races by usually inherited physical and physiological characteristics without regard to language or culture: especially : a member of a people belonging to the African branch of the black race
I noticed that as well, furie. So I went back and read over the two definitions a few times. The above is the part of the "negro" definition that is closest to what you're talking about in the "caucasian" deifnition. What I could ascertain is that "negro" was used specifically to seperate the blacks from the other races, AND to seperate certain blacks from other blacks. Instead of simply being a defining label for ALL blacks, it was just "you must be black, so no matter where you're from, you're black...except for these negroes." Note how it specifically says "without regard to culture or language", so it seems based on certain specific physical differences within the black race, whatever those may be.
Now let's go over the "caucasian" definition again...
2 a : of or relating to the white race of humankind as classified according to physical features b : of or relating to the white race as defined by law specifically as composed of persons of European, No. African, or southwest Asian ancestry
...it just comes across as a far more broad, generalized statement. Note that it is not in disregard to one's language or culture, or "inherited physiological or physical traits", but instead based on basic outwards appearance only, and specifically JUST the skin color. "Caucasian" is also apparently defined here as a much broader term for pretty much ALL "white" people, whereas the "negro" definition states that it doesn't even necessarily apply to ALL black people, but just certain ones based on either their direct African lineage or certain predescribed assumed physical traits.
So from what I could understand, there seems to be a difference. "Caucasian" applies to basically any white person you come across, whereas "negro" technically is only applicable to certain members of the black population. Therefore, the conclusion I can only come up with is that as a broad, generalizing descriptive term, "negro" is wholly inaccurate to begin with, nevermind it's assumed "appropriateness".
