Study on White/Black Names

Released today, a study shows applicants with a "white" sounding name get more responses than "black" sounding names.
What's your 2 cents on the topic?

i believe it...as much as we don't want to admit it almost every employer in the business world has a preconcieved opinion of who they want to hire and i would dare say that the person they usually are looking for is a stereotypical white male businessman.

The name thing is true too. Of course there are exceptions but for the most part one would imagine that Rolando Blackman would be just that...and if the employer is as i described above then it would be easier just to not call that person back rather than go through the process of an interview only to turn him down and ultimately get accused of racism

oh yeah, and you can't tell if a person is white or black by the sound of thier voice either, right?

The "white" names used were Neil, Brett, Greg, Emily, Anne & Jill.
The "black" names used were Tamika, Ebony, Aisha, Rasheed, Kareem & Tyrone.

This is one birthday gift the good Dr. King Jr. would not like to have received today.

It's not just "white" names...I consider myself as PC as they come and I still catch myself picking the more "white" or "American" names on the applications I review over the more "foreign" names. Phooey on me.

Well it happens everywhere and not only to blacks.

I am from Spain (i.e. European... Not Mexican (not that there is anything wrong with it...)) but many times when I call to make a reservation at an upscale restaurant I will get the "sorry we are booked solid" only to call 5 minutes later using my chick's last name (which sounds Italian) and I can get any table I want any time I want.

Hows that for a tapper???

I dont complain because I know I do the same in similar situations, its human nature, and its not going to change until all races are mixed into one...

Anyway, thats my 2 cents.

But you have to admit, black names are way more creative than white names. I knew a black woman whose name was Spontaneous, I do not lie, her mom named her that because mom was at a christmas party when her daughter becided to be born right there on the spot. Whereas another friend who is white named her son Tom Cruise, because she liked the actor

It IS a little arrogant of us to make fun of names.

It's all relative. If I were MOE over in Africa or even lilly white Scandinavia, I'd get made fun of too. Even a Gary or David would sound weird there.

Not that people shouldn't get made fun of. That being said, I went to a summer program at Clemson U. my freshman year in High School with a girl names Shaniquia. Very nice, but a large, African American girl. Lots of SAS!
