I theorize that it has to do with their sense of wonder. While young everything is a new experience to them and they yearn for these experiences. They invigorate them. During the teen years, when kids get much more jaded, and are less impressed with new things, they lose most of their energy.

All animals are more energetic while young. Ever see puppies? Kittens? Even baby elephants after their 200 year gestation period frolic and play more. Its natures way of getting the growth hormones into every cell, by increasing the blood flow.

my humble opinion is your body is like a battery supplying all the additional energy that you need to grow...
once you reach full growth the body only produces enough energy to maintain your full grown state...
then you have to do the additional work on your own by exercising and eating right...
