View Full Version : Are you an autograph hound?
What is the deal with people wanting autographs from famous people? I've never really understood it. Do you show them to people to "prove" you met them or what?

Only autographs I have are from a Boston Bruins carnival a few years ago. I had a bunch of them sign my jersey.

Not really, I wouldn't wait around hoping for a chance to get something signed. I did get a couple of autographs of celebs and sports figures just from beign at the right place at the right time. Most times I'll get it and give to to someone that I know will enjoy something like that.

When I was in college I did it a lot. Going to talk shows was free entertainment so I went to shows all of the time. Conan, Letterman, Regis, and even Leno when he visited NY a few times. My Autograph collecting grew out of just being at these shows. I met plenty of cool people and I have about 200 autographs. The autograph collectors that make no sense to me are the people who would pay a couple of hundred for a signed picture. At least for me there was the excitement of the hunt.
Some of my best are Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, Garth Brook, Jim Carrey, and I had OJ from when the entire cast of Naked Gun 33 1/3 was on Donahue. I ripped it up a few years later.

I always been curious about that and why people go crazy (i.e. start screaming, esp. girls) when they see celebrities. They are just people who happen to entertain us. They don't deserve such accolades for doing their job. Fame is overrated.

A friend of mine used to be a card show promoter, so I got alot of autographs for free from ballplayers for helping him with the show. It used to be relativily cheap for a autograph, but now the prices are outrageous. The highest price I did paid for autographs was $25, and that was for Joe DiMaggio and Tom Seaver, but they were the only two I ever bought. I always had players sign "To Mike, Best Wishes", and because I worked the show, I always had the opportunity to bullshit with the players. I got a interesting story to go with every autograph I got, so it was fun getting autgraphs.

I collect autographs, mostly of sports stars, some music. But I've never stood in line or chased someone famous for one. Except for the time Chris Chambliss was the guest speaker for my Little League dinner, but he expected to sign for the hundreds of kids there that night. Maybe I just don't have the patience or the balls to wait & ask .

isn't a promo tape a lil different than an autograph. An autograph takes 2 seconds to sign and that's it. A promo requires recording time, duplication time, tape costs, studio costs, etc.

I've never gone up to anyone in a restaurant or the street and asked for their autograph-- I respect their right to be left alone. I have gone to book signings (Maya Angelou and Anne Rice) and album signings (Paul Westerberg and Kate Bush).
I was a dork, tho-- I bought an autographed photo of Stewart Copeland off of E-bay once. I would have prefered to meet him personally!

i've met many celebrities, and never once asked for an autograph. Although i did keep Jimmy Page's customs declaration.

I had OJ from when the entire cast of Naked Gun 33 1/3 was on Donahue. I ripped it up a few years later.
Why? Upset he hasn't found the real killer yet? :)
I really don't have much in the way of autographs, since I'm not one for bugging celebrities (and Wisconsin isn't exactly a hotbed of the rich and famous). The jewel of my meager ''collection'' is an autographed copy of Mick Foley's ''Have A Nice Day,'' which almost ended up being snatched from me by some bitchy little old lady right after I walked away from him.

Proud owner of two Figgy Points
when I was younger, my mother wrote away for this book filled with celebrities home address or fan man adress. I got the book and never had the guts to write something decent to anyone really. There had to be at least 250 people in this book, I mailed a letter to maybe 5 of them. The two I got back as personalized picture autoghaphs were "Mr. Wizard" and Henry Mancini(composed the pink panther theme)
I did happen to see a somewhat famous person last night. It was "Buzz" from the Home Alone Movies. He was in this really really cool band, and after he was done playing I asked him to sign my best freinds breasts, his only respoce was" Why should I give her an autograph when I can give her a pearl necklace. I then asked him if he really had a pearl necklace to give her, and he said he did only I couldnt watch him put it around her neck .........what ever that ment.............

When I was 11, Jeff Goldblum was shooting a movie in my town. My friends and I waited for an autograph in the cold for two hours and he finally signed......a fucking "x" for his name. Dick.

I went to the circus one time, and they had these books that you buy and then get it autographed by an acrobat. I brought over a piece of paper because I didnt want to waste money on a book, and the freakin 15 year old signed his initials. Fuck him.

After an impromptu performance in the Virgin Megastore in Paris to celebrate the release of an album [ I think Brick By Brick I stood in an autograph line where Mr. Blitzodelicness himself, Iggy Pop was signing records. When it became my turn, I just said:
