It's Official: WNEW Flips Formats...a sad day

Today marks a sad day in radio, especially for the members of this website. We do not know what will happen to our radio heroes, but what we are sure is that WNEW as we once knew it is gone. No more talk radio. Get ready for the same 40 songs you hear every fucking g-d damn day of your life at the gym, MTV and on countless, lifeless creativity succubuses called top 40 radio stations around the tri-state area.

This is bad, very bad. WNEW has chosen pre-fab, assembly line bullshit music over improvisational comedy and creative entertainment and I fear we've taken one step closer to Orwell's 1984. I fear for the human race on days like these.

I'm really pissed off, even though I knew it was inevitable. The reality of it is just very depressing. I've met some great people through WNEW...friend...girlfriends...business relationships...that's all over now.

Feel free to discuss your memories of WNEW in this thread. Talking about it is good. If you have any news, post it here. Please keep the unsubstantiated rumors to a minimum.

I know it sounds bad but if they remain on only in DC, we in nyc have a shitty chance of landing the boys up here on another station since they will remain with infinity. Changing stations, for the most part, would mean quitting DC. Let's hope the boyz are the focal point a the new format, good or bad. As long as they get four hours a day.
If not, what a way to pay back an air crew who switched slots multiple times at the drop of a hat or worked multiple slots a day without one complaint. Holding back the anger is tough, but must wait until all is known.

Format changes are never announced. People know its coming, but the exact date isn't mentioned to avoid on-air meltdowns. Even the most professional broadcaster can be a douchebag if he knows its his last shift.

Considering the fact that the music has really shitty crossfades, bumpers, and that songs have repeated in the same hour (!!!!! - a huge huge huge no-no, even in the crappiest Top 40 station) - it screams DAT that was slapdashed together.

I love Ron and Fez, they are the only reason I listen to the radio anymore, and I am horrified to think about what life will be like without them. It kills me to say this. I actually hope O&A get back on the air in New York if it helps R&F to follow them. I think R&F show can work with this top 40 format. Honestly, I only listened to them anyway. Stern is on an all music station, Imus is on a all sports station, O&A were on WNEW when it was music, as was Lovelines. Also Rocky Allen was on PLJ and got great ratings because he broke up the monotony. I am not comparing R&F to Rocky, only stating a fact.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

Something NEW (January 27): After weeks and months of speculation, the anticipated format change at WNEW-FM (102.7) is underway. Starting at 1 AM on Monday, January 27th, regular programming was replaced by pop music and an announcement that a new station was coming soon. A similar message appears on the station`s website. WNEW`s ratings during more than three years as an "extreme talk" station have fallen to a dismal 0.7 share of the listening audience. No word yet as to how long the "stunting" will continue or what the station`s next format will be.

WNEW... Rot In Hell!!! I didn't know this was happening until I got home late last night, only to turn on my radio and hear some crappy music. At first I thought it was just some stupid band Lovelines had on the show, but the voices of Adam Corolla or Dr. Drew never came on that night. It was not until this morning when I arrived at work that it really sunk in.... Ron and Fez were not coming on today. Not today, and for now, not anytime soon.
This felt like a hit below the belt. Our budday's entertained me all day at work during the replay of the show the night before. Sometimes I'd take a late lunch because my stomach was in pain from laughing at Fezzy's rants. I'm going to miss them so much. Radio really was never the same after Ron and Fez.
Talk radio can have such a soothing quality to it. And the kind of talk radio line-up that WNEW had was truly unique. From sports in the morning to the incomparable Ron and Fez show, to the hate'im or love'im Tom Lykus, to the brother weise on the weekends. They really had a variety of programming which they just threw out the window because some sleazy executive convinced the "now" sleazy WNEW exec's that they could make the big Buc's (n.p.i.) if they sold their souls and went MTV.
Well they did, and there's nothing we can really do about it. I'd just like to thank our budday's for the hours of entertainment and hope that maybe someday....they'll be back.

I absolutely can't believe this!!! I was listening to Howard until 10:20 and then switched it to WNEW only to find commercials. So I wait until it ends and I hear "the new 102.7" and say "Well I wonder what's so new about 102.7, duh derr" and all of a sudden Avril Levigne. AVRIL LEVIGNE!! is playing. So I get a little nervous but I thought maybe they were playing the first bit of it because it pertained to the last 20 minutes of the show. But low and behold, I'm forced to sit through the entire song. At which point I didnt listen anylonger because I KNOW R&F wouldnt play a FULL avril levigne song.

This is crazy. I will definitely call WNEW

Well it was a great run guys. I have many fond memories of WNEW, including Ferralls first day when people were calling in making fun of him. The softball game. Nights of fights. Big ass simulcasts. I wouldn't worry because great talent always finds a home. I do plan to boycott WNEW's sponsors though, so if anyone has an updated list of things NOT to buy, I'm down.

Radio Dentist is right. This most definitely isn't WNEW's format for three reasons.

1) The imaging says "a new station coming soon". The best stunting generates buzz and flushes out the old listeners. What better to alienate males 18-54 than playing top 40 music?

2) The Top 40 music is Album cuts, not the single "radio edits". Considering that the Eminem "Lose Yourself" had the F-bomb in it, they don't have the correct records to carry this format. If Top 40 was the planned format, they would have spent the money to get the radio edits.

3) The imaging/bumpers/sweepers aren't consistent with a Top 40 station. If this IS truly the format, the programming sucks. I don't buy it.

I just want to apologize on behalf of all of the lazy lurkers like myself. Would it have made a difference if I posted more here and there or called in when I had 2 cents to share? Probably not. Would it have made a difference if I showed up to the O&A rally to show my support or posted on their board? Not likely. This is not the ultimate format. They are now cleansing the station of the few listeners they have left (A likely sign that R & F won't be on tonight). In a few days they'll begin to advertise heavily the new format, and the switch will be complete. I just spoke to my brother who has worked in radio from NY to NC for over 10 years, and he said this is the way stations do these things. The music your hearing is probably being broadcast from one of those preprogrammed remote sights in California or somewhere. I fear all is lost!

Infinity gave R&F a promotion by taking them off tape delay in Washington DC and giving them a live shift in DC. Whether or not they got more pay for being in both DC and NYC is unsure, but Infinity DID do R&F a favor by allowing them to grow an audience in DC by awarding them a better timeslot.

As for competing in an open market, why don't you quit being selfish. Ron's got a family and a home here in NYC. You think he's going to beg for a release from a contract that pays him well so he can be in NYC on the so-called Open Market (forget the fact that the market is saturated) when he'd be more than happy with the same rate of pay? LIVE IN THE NOW.

Would you take guaranteed money or a risk to stay in NY? I'll take the guarantee.

Oh wait, I forgot the economy is sooooo great and never mind the fact that no one wants to advertise.

Oh yeah - did I mention that radio is paid for by... wait for it... ADVERTISING?

It's EXACTLY what Clear Channel wants, with Howard and Imus on the down swing.

WNEW was a fucking albatross, losing money hand over fist. Probably the main reason why Leykis was your drive show instead of Ron and Fez is because Ron and Fez would have been paid more if they did drivetime. (speculation on my part).

Face it.

Infinity gave you FIVE MONTHS OF RON AND FEZ AFTER SEX FOR SAM. ANY OTHER SITUATION, THE STATION'S FORMAT WOULD HAVE BEEN FLIPPED WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF THE INITIAL WNEW IMPLOSION.

Be THANKFUL you got five months of that.

I hate it when people who don't know how the radio business works thinks they are experts. Unfortunatly if this is the end of Ron and Fez on WNEW or New York then it may very well be that they never get to say goodbye or do a final show. We'll just have to see what happens later tonight.

As a listener of O&A I can say that I'm greatful to O&A for giving me an education on format changes. They said it themselves a few years back when the format changed from music to talk that many times it will just happen overnight. No word, no nothing. All new jocks and new format. That's the nature of the radio business I guess.

If this is the end of the show in NY, then I'm truly greatful for the amount of time that I had to hear the show between the O&A cancellation and now. This all could have happened much quicker and more painful had it happened back to back with O&A.

I don't want them to go at all, but I did take the time to listen to every last show they did. If they are indeed gone, I thank them for everything and wish them nothing but the best for all they did.

There isn't anywhere for R&F to go in NY right now, apart from still doing nights- this time on KROCK, which doesn't seem too likely.


Also, it was strongly rumored (whatever that's worth- probably nothing) that the reason Leykis was in drive time was because the folks at KROCK (ie Kingston and Chiusano) weren't having it. They wanted immediate relief for Kane and Cabbie.

I remember when I recieved my stereo on Christmas of 2001. I remember the first station I programmed in was what I knew back then as "The one Opie and Anthony were on". I remember listening to thier show olne day and after came on a program called Ron and Fez. A program like no other. A program where it was ok to have dead air...where you didnt have to talk in some cool modern lingo......a place where everyone and everything was accepted...i remember staying up late and listening to the magic. sweet melissa moanin, friday fezetorials, and building the comedy pyramid...I tape recorded the shows so that on weekends i could replay some of the best of moments. In school lately ive been turning on the radio at lunchtime to listen to the repeats...but today i found that when i turned on the radio instead of the comforting voices of our beloved...i heard "Avril Lavigne" spewin some pop music shit...That moment i realized that my heaven my paradise my true utopia had been stolen from me...the one place where i knew i could be accepted....where i knew i belonged had been lost...I beg of you as my brothers and sisters.....to call infinity broadcasts at and tell them to give back our show....becuz it really was a show built for the listeners some while we can look at the goodside and say "leykis is gone" there really is no true good side of today...another station has fallen to the top 40 format...I didnt even get a chance to say goodbye......I beg of you to call infinity and tell them and i quote in the words of Fez "We're here, We're queer, and goddammit, we will not...dissapear" KEEP RON AND FEZ IN NY! and build the mother fucking pyramid

He's right. They will start to carve a niche in that particular market.

Lets be honest, despite the passionate support of the listners, the show simply did not get enough ratings. That's what matters. If O&A were still on, it would be alright for r&f to get the number that they were getting. But if your station pulls a .7 and its ranked 29 out of 40 stations in the largest market in the country I'd do something drastic.

Who knows R&F may come back sometime in the future. I know nearly zero people in here listen to this station but Wendy Willams who used to do Afternoon drive on Hot97 was fired. (for something i forgot) She spent about 2 years in Philadephia. Then she came back to NYC on a rival station WBLS 107.5. Her show is pulling some nice numbers and many of her fans from hot97 simply moved with her on WBLS.

Could something similar happen to R&F? Who knows. But I recommend some of you not to get too worked up over this. After all its only a radio show (even though many including myself had a deep bond with them at one point or another). I would just move on. I got over the cancellation of O&A rather quickly and many of you can do the same with ron and fez.

Well as I have said so many times, airstaff are the last to know when change is happening at your radio station! I am writing at 3:15AM. I went to set my alarm clock, and was made aware of the change to NEW, which has been rumoured for some time. I still know NOTHING, and was as surprised as anybody. Needless to say, keep a close eye on this space for developments as I find them out. I can't stress enough that I have no info at this point about the future of me or my shows at this time. I appreciate everybody's emails and concern (even at 3AM!). Also please note that I probably will not be able to respond to each and every email that comes in, there really are that many already. Just check here often and I'll tell you what I can when I get info. Let's not assume anything. When I know real facts I'll post them here ASAP. Thanks!

Also please note that for those that hear me outside of WNEW/NYC, none of this has any impact on your stations. Regardless of what goes on, you will still get my show every week at your usual times and on your respective stations.

Thanks for your understanding and support at this uncertain time. I will keep you posted.

Alkey, you of all people should understand that we arent saying that Ron and Fez cant survive without NYC, we are wondering if we in NYC can survive without Ron and Fez. Yes, its just a radio show, but it has become near and dear to us, unlike ANY show before it. They seemed to genuinely like their NY listeners, and we genuinely liked them. Of course theyll have a similar relationship with their audience wherever they go, but it wont be us, and thats the sting of it. The thing that really sucks is that R & F has become such a perfect NY based show. It's kind of like Letterman. His show would never be as good in California because the New York City backdrop is so important to the show. The same can be said of R & F. NYC has become so vital to the atmosphere of the show that it's just not gonna be the same based outside of the city... Even if they end up simulcast here on some other station. Having said that, I'd still them in sindication over not having them on at all... THIS REALLY BLOWS!!! <P>

It's with great sadness that I communicate with you as we discuss the "911" of talk radio in New York City! Better known as 102.7 WNEW, "Where Talk Lived!" I just don't understand how you can supply a product that's NOT in demand?, and think you are going to get ratings, yet alone make money off of the sponsors! New York City has Power 105.1, WKTU, Z100, MTV,WXRK, WRKS, plus more doing a fine job playing there own music! Is WNEW trying to monopolize by becomming a MEGA-MIXTURE of everything? Surely WNEW saw hard times!, but it didn't seem insurmountable!, and a few turns of the wrench could have fixed them! I just don't get it? Yes, Elliot from "Elvis and Elliot." I've heard his DC show, (simulcast in Richmond) and it's not half-bad for a zoo-type show. Much edgier and daring than the usual bland, safe Scott & Todd type stuff. He gets himself into a lot of trouble. They even turn off the dump-button before 6am. I nearly drove off the road to hear radio guys saying "shit" at 5:30 in the morning.

Yes, its just a radio show, but it has become near and dear to us, unlike ANY show before it. They seemed to genuinely like their NY listeners, and we genuinely liked them. For what it's worth, I'm listening to D&M, and they've been inserting segments of a LIVE feed of WNEW during this break. They're ripping WNEW's decision to swap formats, and questioning what the new format will be.

Don just said, "I guess R&F are going to have to move to DC to continue their show?"

They're keep trying to catch 'NEW's "announcer", or the tape they're playing in btwn songs. IF they know anything about what's going on, or what the future holds, they're not letting on at this point.

I live in central NJ and get 94.1 WYSP in Philly pretty well. In case you don't know, D&M are syndicated there. Where am I going with this? I'm just saying that having them in DC isn't too bad as long as they eventually get syndicated to Philly. I'm sure Philly would accept them with open arms and it'd be a pretty smart move considering they'd be able to attract at least 30-45%* of their old audience, giving them a pretty good starting point as far as ratings go.

*Then again, I'm not sure how many other listeners in NJ can actually get WYSP.

This is a perfect example of why one company should not be allowed to own so many stations in a market. As was mentioned in an earlier post, I too heard from someone who works at another Infinity station that Stern and Chiasano were calling the shots at WNEW.

As to R&F going to WYSP, I don't think that will happen until they get some solid numbers at WJFK.

I think we can all thank Ken Stevens. If only he had the backbone to make some management decisions and stick with them.

this really is just awful...what a great weekend the guys must have had what with Ronnies family in town, the Bucs winning and they had a Turducken.
