Though it is far down Jersey, Middletown, Rumsen and Atlantic Highlands have been suggested too.

I will be working in NYC soon hence the interest as the commute from CT is ok but I would rather spend time with my (as yet unborn) kids.

NOOOOOOOOO you do not want your kid to grow up in Middletown OR the Highlands, believe methere might be some nice sections of both but no in general not good. I live a town away from both and damn just damn....

Lots of suggestions so far most of which I have never heard of before :)

The biggest problem I have is placing these all in geographic context. Thanks however for all suggestions.

Er.. thank you sorry if I gave the impression I did not know what a map was.

Mapquest and the like are fine for the physical location but then I am having to overlay trains etc.

It was not my wish to sound ungrateful for the help or more importantly - stupid.

1.) Tenafly

2.) Washington Township

3.) Mahwah

4.) Wayne

5.) Jersey City (in Bizzaro World)

(Those choosen are under the criteria of being 30 minutes or less from Manhattan)

East Brunswick has a great school system and close access to the turnpike.

I've also heard good things about Summit.

North Jersey. Bergen County I heard is a decent commute to the city. I 've also heard that the Summit and Bernardsville commutes are not bad. I live in Princeton and it is a great area, but not a good commute to Manhattan.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

I wish I could live in Englewood. It's got a ton of mansions, but they're really old and nice looking. Hey I lived in Englewood and like anywhere else, its all about which side of the tracks you are on. But it is very nice as far as the downtown area and all around appeal. Its school system isn't great but is getting a lot better. It is also a very easy commute to the city. If I was moving Bergen County I would live there.

Another good Bronx suggestion is Morris Park and Indian Village (nice houses at prices well below most of Westchester). Yonkers, which is in Westchester, but only 20 minutes from midtown.

Also, parts of Staten Island rival even the most suburban of suburbs. Brooklyn's has a few nice areas as well, although their names escape me at the moment. And there's always Roosevelt Island.

Basically, there are plenty of good, clean, safe neighborhoods in and around the metro New York area.

Locust Valley probably has very good schools, but none are better than Garden City. Rockville Centre is also a very nice 'burb.

The NY Times does a decent little neighborhood/community summary profile every week. This links to the web site
http://www.nytimes.com/ref/realestate/iytoli.html
I think your choice comes down to where you want to be on the bohemian to bumpkin neighborhood spectrum. If you live in Westport already I guess I don't have to warn you about sticker shock on real estate or the cost of living.:-(

Trust me all things are relative. If you were to see the high cost and small size of houses in southern England, even the expensive areas look bargain priced in the US. (Westport though is expensive whichever way you dice it!)

Northern Westchester is nice. Expensive, but really good schools and not a bad commute to NYC by train or car. Peekskill and Ossining are cheeper, but not without reason.
