Somebody already owns the .com address. I think it used to go to a porn site.

Im know that the rf.com is taken i was just using it as an examople the root of the question is > if all designations are available what would make a person chose one over the other? and is there any advantage to having .com over . orgor .net over . com and so on.

There really is no ranking system for them. They are all of equal value. Kind of like an area code to put it easy.

This is true, that's what the top-level domains were all technically intended for. .Net was to be for ISP's ("network"). Except .tv - actually .tv is a country code (Tuvalu) but the country decided to open up .tv for general use (which yes, is now to be for multimedia-rich sites, or TV-related ones). Otherwise (usually), to use a country code, you need to have some sort of presence in that country. Like your hosting is there, or something.
Generally, businesses find .com to be preferred, .net second and everything else a distant third, including the new .biz - from a technical standpoint, the domain names don't mean much at all. Your DNS server takes the name your computer throws at it (say www.ronfez.net), then tells your computer the IP address where ronfez.net can be found, and your computer goes there.

Let's not forget .edu. That domain is reserved for educational institutions.
The domains just give you some idea as to what type of location you're going to. It's not a status symbol.

I understand most of the distinctions between them, except for .com and .net...is there ANY difference there?
And what about .co.uk? Do sites on British servers HAVE to have that in the address?

you can check out over 200 URL extensions over at http://www.domainit.com/country-domains.htm
If I recall correctly, .com was originally designated for "commercial" and .net for "network," and co.uk is the British version of .com and org.uk is the British version of .org, for "organization."
In case that URL copies and pastes messed up, here it is again:

.com - Commercial
.gov - Government
.net - Networks
.org - Non-profit Organization
.mil - military (not common)
.tv - T.V. related

Shit, if it's going to be that kind of a party
I'm gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes
The only thing that I would add to this is that most businesses find a ".com" address preferable as that's what most people are likely to think of when they enter in the address. Still, if register your address with all of the major search engines, one shouldn't have a problem, making the question moot.
The significance is largely irrelevant today as you can see porn sites with ".org" addresses and they are clearly not charitable organizations.
