View Full Version : Can we get a TOPIC FORUM dedicated to POLITICS and CURRENT EVENTS?

I have noticed with the political and current events conciousness of those here on the board that all the political speak seems to fall into off topic. Is it too far fetched to get a separate forum here on political and current events subjects? Maybe even just call it "Current Events" or "Politics" or "Current Events and Politics" or better yet "RonFez.net CROSSFIRE" or "The RonFez.net NO-SPIN Zone". I don't know, help me here.
It sometimes feels like I am in the middle of Crossfire with that guy with the funny bow tie and the bald headed fellow maybe even with those Hannity and Colmes fellows and I thought it may be a good idea?
Anyone else?

i think it's a good idea. with all this impending war stuff, there have been a lot more politics/current events threads than ever before. it makes sense to me that they should be together in their own place. this would also make it easier for us simpletons to find the usual dipshit off topic threads.

Excellent suggestion guys. We're discussing it as well as ground rules for ensuring a safe environment for all in a room sure to be full of heated discussion and opinons.

Considering the intelligence of those who have had heated discussions already. I am just so amazed and INFORMED by those as well. The only thing I don't like is when there is a heated discussion, posting replies like exchanging gunfire and there has to be a stupid name calling or deroggatory staement in the rebuttle. That just BLOWS your point straight to hell.
Especially the HordeKing/YerDaddy debates and the FiveB247/Bergalad battles were just so powerful to me but the bits of name calling I always had a problem with. No disrespect to any mentioned but thats just how I saw it.
Discussions CAN happen even if you hate one another but just do it in a reasonable way without words that can hurt.

Hopefully we can get someone steeped in good old fasioned Conservative American values to moderate the room. It would stink like Al Sharptons running shoes to have a pinko liberal moderating the room.
any nominees?

Someone's confused.
I know, I know, that blanket loathing of Ay-rabs CAN be deceiving...
But yeah, keen idea, fluff. I'm all for it.

HA! So true, when I get home the LAST thing I want to do is think. My head hurts from all the political discussions I hear at school. Luckily, I haven't had to do that here yet but it's good to have a plan just in case!

How many resolutions will you pass on this issue, and will you actually be enforcing the rules when people break them?

I think it's a grand Idea.
After we get this room, hows about we talk about my idea for a FOOD forum too!
But we DO need a catchy name. I'm burning the midnight oil thinking about it as we speak.

I'm all for the idea, too, as long as members can keep their arguments intelligent and not resort to name calling and personal attacks.
Liberal and Conservative leaning voices should be heard, but not when comments like "you're a fucking liar" or "you're an asshole" fly around.
If we do add the forum, I'm warning everyone right here and now to keep it respectful and dignified.

When you add it, can you also make it impossible to enter the forum and post if you can't pass a standard reading comprehension test?
And, for those that fail, can there be a soundtrack that yells "YOU'RE SO STUPID!!" at them at a deafening volume?
That'd be great.
Thanks.

I participate in a "Current Events Debate" message board elsewhere, and just stole some of their guidelines and am posting them below:
[quote]
COURTESY - We don't exactly walk around on tiptoes around here, but there are a couple of netiquette issues in that area that can get you in a jam too.
Recognize the difference between attacking a poster's ideas and the poster. While it's acceptable to say, "your point of view is absurd," it is not okay to say, "you are absurd."
Consistently poor spelling and grammar does you a disservice as it makes your posts more difficult to read. Take the time to at least adhere to a minimum of English grammatical rules. Capitalization, punctuation, etc. If we can't understand you, we can't respond to you. It would be a shame to see valuable contributions lost in a pit of confusion.
FLAMING V. DISAGREEMENT: Do not preface a post by stating that you expect to be flamed. Recognize that flaming is a personal attack while disagreement is the staple of this board. Legitimate debaters do not flame, but they might disagree. Expecting flames announces to the board that even you do not consider your words worthy of defense. Develop a thick skin. It is not necessary to be popular or well-liked on this board, however you might enjoy it more if you are respected. Whining about being flamed when in reality you've merely had your ideas, facts or opinions challenged will earmark you as a screen name not to be taken seriously. Don't short change your future contributions by screaming "Foul!" prematurely. Never fear. If you are truly being "flamed" you will see a posse of veterans take the flamer to task.
DUPLICATE AND RELATED POSTS - Keep discussions to a single thread unless you have a side debate that is worthy of it's own thread. Side debates are encouraged to remain within the main debate.
TROLLS - Commonly, a troll is considered to be someone who has posted an obviously inflammatory statement designed to elicit predictable responses. i.e. "I see nothing wrong with pedophilia." The term comes from the verb "to troll" rather than the characters in Billy Goats Gruff although there are usually some similarity. They are typically screen names no one recognizes. Because of this, newcomers may be reluctant to join the board because of the possibility of being labeled a troll. Please be assured that if you are prepared to engage in rational discussion of your facts or opinions you will not be labeled a troll. Trolls rarely stick around for very long. The best defense is IGNORING. Trolls subsist on responses and the angrier the better. Once you feel a post was offered by a troll or even just someone looking to get your goat, starve the little beast. Petty bickering isn't worth your time and saves server space.
It's very easy to misread what's posted here because many of the regular posters have known each other for quite some time and have grown accustomed to speaking to each other in ways you wouldn't dream of talking to strangers. There are in-jokes and nicknames, and references to debates-past that will confuse you. Don't mistake that for hatefulness or vindictiveness. And don't assume that it gives you license to jump right in and start calling names. It's like someone insulting one of your friends or siblings after you've been calling him/her a jerk all day. You can do it, but strangers can't. It also helps to understand that humor around here is often of the sarcastic and caustic variety. Take a moment to re-read a post, or better yet an entire thread, before immediately jumping to the conclusion that someone is being serious or hateful. The person may be using humor to either diffuse a tense thread or illustrate a point.
What's very best about this board is that, through the exchange that takes place during each debate, we learn about each other and form relationships unlike any others you're likely to find on the other boards around here. We may argue viciously about a subject sensitive to us, but in the end, we all have gained a tremendous respect for the others that
