I have an interview Tuesday, and the agency who placed me told me a little bit about the interviewer. Those of you in the corporate world can vouch for this. I have to meet with a rep from H R first and you know that if H R is like trying to get over a wall. Some of the questions that I can expect are going to be What is your biggest weakness? and they told me that shes going to ask my opinion about the war. What are some good ways to get around these without avoiding them?

I think Spud from Trainspotting would give you the best example of how to ace a job interview.

This person will be asking about your position on the war why? Is it a media or journalism position?

What is your biggest weakness?

I been with my present employer for 15 years but remember this as being one of the key questions when i was interviewing, 15 years ago. Man, some things never change!

Back then I was told or it was suggested to me that you should reply with "my weakness is that I am an overworker and never satisfied with the job until it is completely done", or something to that affect.

I'm not sure if there is too much more you can say without hurting yourself. I'm sure many people actually confess their weaknesses like "yeah, I like to goof off sometimes" or " man, I love calling out sick on a day with a high tan index"

Employers should have thrown that question out a long time ago.

Best Of Luck with your interview. Stay loose and make sure to look the person in the eye when communicating.

Totally inappropriate to ask you political views unless you're applying for CNN or something.

Usually HR is good for nothing except for an explaination of benefits, discussion of job, etc.

Be prepared for "what is your greatest weakness."

Answer: "I'm a bit of a perfectionist."

Greatest strengths: "Team player, self motivated, passionate about the job, and then go on about how you are qualified."

Ah, the war question. If they do ask that question, you can join my class action lawsuit!

Saying "Anyone who doesn't look like me is probably guilty/is wrong/is stupid/deserves to die"- BAD move. Anything else could be interpreted as sexual harassment, so good luck, brother.

My biggest weakness is that I'm a perfectionist is a pretty standard and safe response to that query.

If you are asked about the war, you can say, (and I suggest you do) that your opinion on the war isn't relevant to your performance of the job.

Very common...and much safer than respnding your biggest weakness is adolescent boys or oxycontin or Celine Dion records...

How about, "My biggest weakness is that I have a tendency to return to work after hours with some buddies I met in the joint and steal all the computers and office supplies."

"Also, my grandmother has been known to die 5 times in a single year!"

Write down the most commonly asked questions in any inteview. Then write out your responses on index cards and memorize them.

These include:

* Describe your greatest strength
* Describe your greatest weakness
** This is an opportunity to demonstrate that (a) you know your limitations and (b) you can turn a "development area" into an area of strength.
* Tell me a little about yourself
* Do you have any questions for me?

They are NOT legally permitted to ask you about your age, marital status, sexual orientation, politics, race or gender and how it affects your job. If they do, you do not have to answer it.

I am DEAD SERIOUS. HordeKing, you should be able to back me up on this.

Go to a website like:

* careerbuilder.com
* monster.com
* hotjobs.com

for more interview tips & tricks and you'll be fine.

If this got to you late, I'm sorry. I had a rough day at the office.

That's not necessarily true. Some jobs have an age limit, like mine. So age is a very relevant question.

If age is a job-requirement, not something they ask about, then it's different. It will be clearly stated in the application/job description, and the reasons will be clearly stated. Usually this means you've got a very physically-intensive job and they can't hire you past a certain age for insurance/liability issues.

Otherwise, they aren't legally allowed to ASK you anything about your age, etc.

Most states have it spelled out in language like "not permitted to discriminate on the basis of. . ." (That's how it is in most NY statutes.)
